    Effect of extender composition on sperm cryopreservation of Asian catfish Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch) and Clarias Batrachus (linnaeus)

    Air breathing catfish species Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch) and Clarias batrachus (Linn.) are important table fish and fetch high market price. Cryopreservation of spermatozoa can be a useful tool in captive seed production for domestication and aquaculture of these catfish species. The objective of the present study was to identify optimum extender composition for sperm cryopreservation of the two species, H. fossilis and C. batrachus. Four extender compositions Hank’s Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS), Modified Hank’s Balanced Salt Solution (M-HBSS), Modified Hank’s Balanced Salt Solution with hen’s egg yolk (M-HBSS with EY) and European catfish were evaluated for cryopreservation of catfish sperm and 10 % Dimethyle Sulphoxide (DMSO) was used as a cryoprotectant. The pooled milt exhibiting 70-80% motile sperm was used for cryopreservation experiment. After storage for 48 hrs at -196ºC, the milt was thawed and evaluated for fertility test. The percentage of hatching was used as a parameter for the comparative evaluation of different extender composition. In H. fossilis extender M-HBSS indicated highest hatching rate (49.06%), followed by HBSS (42.76%), M-HBSS with EY (37.46%) and European catfish (29.47%). The hatching success with extender M-HBSS did not differ significantly (P > 0.05) from the control group (51%). In C. batrachus extender HBSS exhibited highest hatching (62.1 %), followed by M-HBSS with EY (51.6%), European Catfish (46.3%) and M-HBSS (40.9%). The hatching rate in control was 90% in C. batrachus. The results indicated that the two species differ in the protocol for sperm cryopreservation. The paper presents successful cryopreservation of sperm with the production of viable hatchlings of H. fossilis and C. batrachus for the first time. The protocol reported in the study can be used for scaling up of seed production of these two catfish species. © 2009, Asian Fisheries Society. All rights reserved.

    Influence of weather patterns and air quality on ecological population dynamics of ectoparasites in goats

    Ectoparasitism has a damaging impact on the economy of goat production in India, but the factors influencing its distribution and dynamics are less explored. The present study was designed to investigate the influence of environmental factors like weather and air quality parameters on the occurrence of different types of ectoparasites in goats of two agro-climatic regions of India, viz. the Upper Gangetic Plain (UGP) and the Western Himalayas (WH). The prevalence survey for ectoparasitism among goats was conducted during the four distinct climatic seasons (winter, summer, monsoon, autumn) in both regions. The season-wise data of weather parameters (maximum and minimum temperature, relative humidity in morning and evening, sunrise and sunset time, mean daily temperature and relative humidity, daily variation in temperature and relative humidity, and day length) and air quality parameters (air quality index (AQI), particulate matter 2.5 μm (PM2.5), particulate matter 10 μm (PM10)) of both regions were analyzed in relation with the ectoparasitic prevalence pattern of corresponding regions. The results depict a noticeable correlation between the studied parameters and seasonal variation in the occurrence of each type of ectoparasites. This outcome on the interaction of studied parameters and ectoparasitism is intriguing and it opens a huge scope for future studies on the biometeorological aspects of host-parasite ecological interplay and evolutionary biology. The better understanding of climatological aspects of ectoparasite occurrences helps goat farmers in formulating appropriate timely intervention strategies for the economic control of ectoparasites, which in turn tackles ectoparasiticidal drug resistance and reduces threat of vector-borne diseases. © 2020, ISB.

    The Anti-oxidant and the Anti-diabetic Effects of Terminalia chebula and Withania somnifera in Subclinically Diabetic Dogs

    Background: The present study evaluated the antioxidant as well as the anti-diabetic potential of Terminalia chebula (Haritaki) and Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha) in subclinically diabetic dogs. Methods: A total of thirty subclinically diabetic dogs were divided into five groups of six animals each; Group I (Positive control), Group II (T. chebula extract), Group III (W. somnifera extract), Group IV (T. chebula and W. somnifera extracts at 1:1 ratio) and Group V (N- acetylcysteine). Six apparently healthy dogs were kept as negative control (Group VI) for the study. The animals were evaluated based on diabetic biomarkers (Random blood glucose, fasting blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin, serum fructosamine and serum insulin) and oxidative stress markers (lipid peroxidation, reduced glutathione, superoxide dismutase and catalase activities) on days 0, 15 and 30 of the study. Result: Significant oxidative stress was observed in the subclinically diabetic dogs and the supplementation of N- acetylcysteine, T. chebula and W. somnifera effectively curbed the oxidative impairments and further progression of diabetes. The improvement in oxidative, as well as diabetic biomarkers, was predominant in Group V animals, followed by Group IV, Group II and Group III. It may be concluded that therapeutic modulation of redox mechanisms may aid in the clinical management of subclinical diabetes mellitus, however, the mechanisms involved should be further explored. © 2023 Agricultural Research Communication Centre.
