Quantifying Solar Cell Power Output in the Lab: A MATLAB-Based Approach with Artificial Illumination
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2025) Apoorva Vaishya; K. A. Chinmaya
This paper introduces a detailed methodology for measuring the power output of solar cells. It utilizes an analytical and simulation-based approach to evaluate the effectiveness of outdoor solar cells in natural sunlight against their performance in an indoor laboratory setting using artificial illumination. The study endeavors to establish a dependable and reproducible framework for assessing the effectiveness of photovoltaic systems, which is essential for enhancing the efficiency of photovoltaic technologies. MATLAB/ Simulink platform is used to simulate solar cell behavior under different solar irradiation and light intensities, allowing precise control over the variables in our experiments. Outdoor measurements capture performance in real-world scenarios, while indoor setups provide controlled testing environments. The results presented in our study clearly illustrate the differences in power output observed in different settings, emphasizing the significant impact that the characteristics of the light source have on the efficiency of solar cells. By employing a dual-approach comparison, a comprehensive understanding of solar cell behavior is achieved, leading to the development of more effective testing protocols and advancements in photovoltaic designs. The accuracy and flexibility of the MATLAB model highlight its usefulness in solar energy research, making it a valuable tool for both academic studies and industry applications. The findings make a valuable contribution to the progress of solar technology, as they successfully connect the results obtained in controlled laboratory settings with the actual performance of solar systems in real-world conditions. © 2025 IEEE.
