    We report the first measurement of the full angular distribution for inclusive J/ψ→μ+μ- decays in p+p collisions at s=510 GeV. The measurements are made for J/ψ transverse momentum 2

    Appraisal of maternal and neonatal cord serum immunoglobulins in Indians

    Serum immunoglobulins IgG, IgA and IgM were estimated in paired maternal and cord serum samples collected from 100 mothers and their neonates (101 in number) at the time of normal vaginal delivery. Levels of the immunoglobulins in 20 non-pregnant age and socio-economically matched women served as the control. Factors such as parity, mild concurrent upper respiratory or urinary tract infection or anaemia seemed to be of little consequence. However, significantly low serum IgG levels were observed in the healthy primipara as well as healthy multigravida as compared to the non-pregnant women (mean 1139.5±148.3 mg percent). Cord serum IgG levels in neonates born to healthy primi and neonates of healthy multigravida were not significantly different. However, as compared to the respective maternal group these values were significantly low in cord sera in both the groups. It is proposed that transfer of IgG across placenta may not be as free as envisaged and there may be some subclass selectivity. Both preterm and low birth weight for term neonates showed significantly low IgG level as compared to the full term normal birth weight neonates. A critical analysis of data for IgA and IgM revealed the presence of IgM in six samples. Three of these neonates were born to multipara with a history of concurrent mild infection, and these had raised IgA and IgG levels. In 3 other neonates born to healthy primipara, with raised cord serum IgM, IgG level was not raised and IgA was present only in one case. It appears that detection of raised levels of all the three immunoglobulins in the cord might indicate intrauterine infection.

    ATHENA has been designed as a general purpose detector capable of delivering the full scientific scope of the Electron-Ion Collider. Careful technology choices provide fine tracking and momentum resolution, high performance electromagnetic and hadronic calorimetry, hadron identification over a wide kinematic range, and near-complete hermeticity. This article describes the detector design and its expected performance in the most relevant physics channels. It includes an evaluation of detector technology choices, the technical challenges to realizing the detector and the R&D required to meet those challenges. © 2022 The Author(s).

    The azimuthal anisotropy coefficients v2 and v4 of π0 and η mesons are measured in Au + Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV as a function of transverse momentum pT (1-14 GeV/c) and centrality. The extracted v2 coefficients are found to be consistent between the two meson species over the measured pT range. The ratio of v4/v22 for π0 mesons is found to be independent of pT for 1-9 GeV/c, implying a lack of sensitivity of the ratio to the change of underlying physics with pT. Furthermore, the ratio of v4/v22 is systematically larger in central collisions, which may reflect the combined effects of fluctuations in the initial collision geometry and finite viscosity in the evolving medium. © 2013 American Physical Society.

    Measurements of electrons from the decay of open-heavy-flavor mesons have shown that the yields are suppressed in Au+Au collisions compared to expectations from binary-scaled p+p collisions. These measurements indicate that charm and bottom quarks interact with the hot dense matter produced in heavy-ion collisions much more than expected. Here we extend these studies to two-particle correlations where one particle is an electron from the decay of a heavy-flavor meson and the other is a charged hadron from either the decay of the heavy meson or from jet fragmentation. These measurements provide more detailed information about the interactions between heavy quarks and the matter, such as whether the modification of the away-side-jet shape seen in hadron-hadron correlations is present when the trigger particle is from heavy-meson decay and whether the overall level of away-side-jet suppression is consistent. We statistically subtract correlations of electrons arising from background sources from the inclusive electron-hadron correlations and obtain two-particle azimuthal correlations at √sNN=200 GeV between electrons from heavy-flavor decay with charged hadrons in p+p and also first results in Au+Au collisions. We find the away-side-jet shape and yield to be modified in Au+Au collisions compared to p+p collisions. © 2011 American Physical Society.

    Charged-pion-interferometry measurements were made with respect to the second- and third-order event plane for Au + Au collisions at √sNN200 GeV. A strong azimuthal-angle dependence of the extracted Gaussian-source radii was observed with respect to both the second- and third-order event planes. The results for the second-order dependence indicate that the initial eccentricity is reduced during the medium evolution, which is consistent with previous results. In contrast, the results for the third-order dependence indicate that the initial triangular shape is significantly reduced and potentially reversed by the end of the medium evolution, and that the third-order oscillations are largely dominated by the dynamical effects from triangular flow. © 2014 American Physical Society

    The fraction of J/ψ mesons which come from B-meson decay, FB→J/ψ, is measured for J/ψ rapidity 1.2<|y|<2.2 and pT>0 in p+p and Cu+Au collisions at sNN = 200 GeV with the PHENIX detector. The extracted fraction is FB→J/ψ=0.025±0.006 (stat) ± 0.010(syst) for p+p collisions. For Cu+Au collisions, FB→J/ψ is 0.094 ± 0.028(stat) ± 0.037(syst) in the Au-going direction (-2.2

    The PHENIX collaboration presents first measurements of low-momentum (0.41 GeV/c) direct-photon yield dNγdir/dη is a smooth function of dNch/dη and can be well described as proportional to (dNch/dη)α with α≈1.25. This scaling behavior holds for a wide range of beam energies at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider, for centrality selected samples, as well as for different A+A collision systems. At a given beam energy, the scaling also holds for high pT (>5 GeV/c), but when results from different collision energies are compared, an additional sNN-dependent multiplicative factor is needed to describe the integrated-direct-photon yield. © 2019 authors.     High-energy proton- and deuteron-nucleus collisions provide an excellent tool for studying a wide array of physics effects, including modifications of parton distribution functions in nuclei, gluon saturation, and color neutralization and hadronization in a nuclear environment, among others. All of these effects are expected to have a significant dependence on the size of the nuclear target and the impact parameter of the collision, also known as the collision centrality. In this article, we detail a method for determining centrality classes in p(d)+A collisions via cuts on the multiplicity at backward rapidity (i.e., the nucleus-going direction) and for determining systematic uncertainties in this procedure. For d+Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV we find that the connection to geometry is confirmed by measuring the fraction of events in which a neutron from the deuteron does not interact with the nucleus. As an application, we consider the nuclear modification factors Rp(d)+A, for which there is a bias in the measured centrality-dependent yields owing to auto correlations between the process of interest and the backward-rapidity multiplicity. We determine the bias-correction factors within this framework. This method is further tested using the hijing Monte Carlo generator. We find that for d+Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV, these bias corrections are small and vary by less than 5% (10%) up to pT=10 (20) GeV/c. In contrast, for p+Pb collisions at sNN=5.02 TeV we find that these bias factors are an order of magnitude larger and strongly pT dependent, likely attributable to the larger effect of multiparton interactions. © 2014 American Physical Society.

    The PHENIX experiment measured the centrality dependence of two-pion Bose-Einstein correlation functions in sNN=200GeV Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The data are well represented by Lévy-stable source distributions. The extracted source parameters are the correlation-strength parameter λ, the Lévy index of stability α, and the Lévy-scale parameter R as a function of transverse mass mT and centrality. The λ(mT) parameter is constant at larger values of mT, but decreases as mT decreases. The Lévy-scale parameter R(mT) decreases with mT and exhibits proportionality to the length scale of the nuclear overlap region. The Lévy exponent α(mT) is independent of mT within uncertainties in each investigated centrality bin, but shows a clear centrality dependence. At all centralities, the Lévy exponent α is significantly different from that of Gaussian (α=2) or Cauchy (α=1) source distributions. Comparisons to the predictions of Monte-Carlo simulations of resonance-decay chains show that, in all but the most peripheral centrality class (50%-60%), the obtained results are inconsistent with the measurements, unless a significant reduction of the in-medium mass of the η′ meson is included. In each centrality class, the best value of the in-medium η′ mass is compared to the mass of the η meson, as well as to several theoretical predictions that consider restoration of UA(1) symmetry in hot hadronic matter. © 2024 American Physical Society.

    The PHENIX experiment at RHIC has measured the centrality dependence of the direct photon yield from Au+Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV down to pT=0.4 GeV/c. Photons are detected via photon conversions to e+e- pairs and an improved technique is applied that minimizes the systematic uncertainties that usually limit direct photon measurements, in particular at low pT. We find an excess of direct photons above the Ncoll-scaled yield measured in p+p collisions. This excess yield is well described by an exponential distribution with an inverse slope of about 240MeV/c in the pT range 0.6-2.0 GeV/c. While the shape of the pT distribution is independent of centrality within the experimental uncertainties, the yield increases rapidly with increasing centrality, scaling approximately with Npartα, where α=1.38±0.03(stat)±0.07(syst). © 2015 American Physical Society.

    Jet production rates are measured in p+p and d+Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV recorded in 2008 with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Jets are reconstructed using the R=0.3 anti-kt algorithm from energy deposits in the electromagnetic calorimeter and charged tracks in multiwire proportional chambers, and the jet transverse momentum (pT) spectra are corrected for the detector response.     A comprehensive survey of event-by-event fluctuations of charged hadron multiplicity in relativistic heavy ions is presented. The survey covers Au+Au collisions at sNN=62.4 and 200 GeV, and Cu+Cu collisions at sNN=22.5,62.4, and 200 GeV. Fluctuations are measured as a function of collision centrality, transverse momentum range, and charge sign. After correcting for nondynamical fluctuations due to fluctuations in the collision geometry within a centrality bin, the remaining dynamical fluctuations expressed as the variance normalized by the mean tend to decrease with increasing centrality. The dynamical fluctuations are consistent with or below the expectation from a superposition of participant nucleon-nucleon collisions based upon p+p data, indicating that this dataset does not exhibit evidence of critical behavior in terms of the compressibility of the system. A comparison of the data with a model where hadrons are independently emitted from a number of hadron clusters suggests that the mean number of hadrons per cluster is small in heavy ion collisions. © 2008 The American Physical Society.

    Bose-Einstein correlations of charged kaons are used to probe Au+Au collisions at sNN=200GeV and are compared to charged pion probes, which have a larger hadronic scattering cross section. Three-dimensional Gaussian source radii are extracted, along with a one-dimensional kaon emission source function. The centrality dependences of the three Gaussian radii are well described by a single linear function of Npart1/3 with a zero intercept. Imaging analysis shows a deviation from a Gaussian tail at r10fm, although the bulk emission at lower radius is well described by a Gaussian. The presence of a non-Gaussian tail in the kaon source reaffirms that the particle emission region in a heavy-ion collision is extended, and that similar measurements with pions are not solely due to the decay of long-lived resonances. © 2009 The American Physical Society.

    We present midrapidity charged-pion invariant cross sections, the ratio of the π- to π+ cross sections and the charge-separated double-spin asymmetries in polarized p + p collisions at p√s = 200 GeV. While the cross section measurements are consistent within the errors of next-to-leading-order (NLO) perturbative quantum chromodynamics predictions (pQCD), the same calculations overestimate the ratio of the charged-pion cross sections. This discrepancy arises from the cancellation of the substantial systematic errors associated with the NLO-pQCD predictions in the ratio and highlights the constraints these data will place on flavor-dependent pion fragmentation functions. The charge-separated pion asymmetries presented here sample an x range of ~0.03-0.16 and provide unique information on the sign of the gluon-helicity distribution. © 2015 American Physical Society.

    Clinical and immunological study of patients of cancer cervix

    A detailed clinico-pathologic and immunologic study was carried out on 60 patients with cancer of the cervix and compared with normal controls (20) and cases of chronic cervicitis and erosion (20). Sensitivity to 2:4 dinitrochlorobenzene was 100% in both the control groups. Sensitivity to PPD and candida antigen was 80% in healthy controls and 85% in patients with chronic cervicitis. Cell-mediated immune response in cases of cancer of the cervix to 2:4 DNCB was 84% and to recall antigens was 57.9%. Reactivity to recall antigens of 2:4 DNCB was not much impaired in stages I and II but there was a progressive decrease in positive response and an increase in anergy in stages III and IV. There was a significant rise in the levels of serum IgG in cancer of the cervix, and this rise was parallel with the advancing stages of the disease. The IgA and IgM levels showed no significant change.
