Spectroscopy as an analytical and diagnostic tool

The rapid expansion of research activity in the field of material science evokes the need of different analytical and diagnostic techniques. Spectroscopy is such an analytical and diagnostic tool, extremely used to characterize materials. It is now commonly used by astrophysicist, mineralogists, nanophysicists or even scientists working in medical research. This chapter has therefore been prepared to provide an easy access to basic information on different branches of spectroscopy. Our main attention is on use of the emitted/absorbed or scattered radiation to obtain information about the matter with which the incident radiation has interacted or from which the observed radiation was created.
