    A calorimetric investigation of long-range ordering in the cadmium-mercury system

    The energies of long-range ordering at 81°K of ω-phase Cd-Hg alloys of compositions CdHg2, Cd2Hg and of intermediate compositions have been measured in a liquid alloy solution calorimeter. The values show a continuous variation with composition with a minimum for the equiatomic alloy. The results are analysed in terms of near-neighbor interactions and strain energy of solid solutions. The interpretation is in satisfactory agreement with a preferential mode of atomic substitution in the off-stoichiometric ordered alloys. A continuity of the ordered phase field extending from CdHg2 to Cd2Hg is inferred in accord with published superconductivity results. © 1971.
