    Effect of integrated nutrient management on productivity, nutrient uptake and economics of rainfed pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) and blackgram (Vigna mungo) intercropping system

    Field experiments were carried out during kharif season of 2008-09 and 2009-10 to study the effect of integrated nutrition on productivity, nutrient uptake and economics of rainfed pigeonpea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.] and blackgram [Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper] intercropping system. Pooled data shows that intercropping systems did not influence significantly on the grain, stover, biological yield and harvest index of pigeonpea and blackgram. Total uptake of N, P, K, S and Zn by pigeonpea were highest recorded with the sole pigeonpea (S1) which was comparable to normal intercropping system (S2) and significantly superior over paired intercropping system (S3). Further, pooled data revealed that normal intercropping system (S2) gave maximum values of gross return (Rs 120 050), net return (Rs 99 396), B:C ratio (4.8), pigeonpea equivalent yield (21.75 q/ha), land equivalent ratio (1.70), production efficiency (7.98 kg/ha/day) and economic efficiency (364.83 Rs/ha/day) which was at par with paired intercropping system (S3) and significantly superior to sole planting of pigeonpea (S1). Application of 100% recommended dose of fertilizers + 50% recommended dose of nitrogen (through vermicompost) + 5 kg Zn/ha gave significantly higher grain yield (21.05 and 5.23 q/ha), stover yield (82.19 and 14.47 q/ha), biological yield (103.24 and 18.85 q/ha) and harvest index (20.23 and 26.40%) of pigeonpea and blackgram, respectively. This treatment (F7) also gave the higher total uptake of N, P, K, S and Zn by pigeonpea and blackgram. Similarly, application of 100% RDF + 50% RDN + 5 kg Zn/ha (F7) recorded highest gross return (Rs 130 735), net return (Rs 109 277), B:C ratio (5.11), PEY (24.24 q/ha), LER (1.57), production efficiency (8.9 kg/ha/day) and economic efficiency (401.07 Rs/ha/day) which was at par with 50% RDF + 100% RDN + 5 kg Zn/ha (F8) and significantly superior to rest of the treatments.

    Effect of integrated nutrient management on the performance of sole and intercropped pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) under rainfed conditions

    A field experiment was conducted during kharif seasons of crop years (July-June) 2008-09 and 2009-10 at Varanasi to find out the effect of integrated nutrient management (INM) on the growth, yield, economics, nutrient uptake and balance sheet of sole and intercropped of pigeonpea {Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.} and blackgram {Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper} in 1:1 normal planting (60 cm spacing) and 2:2 paired row planting (40/80 cm). Intercropping system had significant effect on gross returns, net returns, B:C ratio and monetary advantage index (MAI), total uptake of N,P,K,S and Zn, when compared to sole pigeonpea. Higher values of gross returns, net returns, B:C ratio and MAI were recorded under normal intercropping system followed by paired intercropping system. Significantly higher values of total uptake (N,P,K,S and Zn) was recorded under sole pigeonpea. The lowest negative value of actual gain of S and Zn was recorded under paired intercropping. Among the integrated nutrient management, application of 100% RDF + 50% of RDN through vermicompost + 5 kg Zn/ha gave significantly higher growth and yield attributes, grain yield, gross returns, net returns, B:C ratio, MAI and total uptake (NPKS and Zn) of both crops. The lowest N/P/K/S efficiency ratio and physiological efficiency index of cropping systems were recorded under application of 100% RDF + 50% NVC + 5 kg Zn/ha followed by 50% RDF + 100% NVC + 5 kg Zn/ha. Application of 100% RDF + 50% NVC + 5 kg Zn/ha recorded significantly higher total uptake and available soil S and Zn after harvest of crop. Maximum negative value of actual gain of S and Zn was also recorded with the application of 100% RDF + 50% NVC + 5 kg Zn/ha.

    Physico-chemical and sensory changes during the storage of lal peda

    Lal peda is a popular heat desiccated traditional dairy delicacy of eastern India specially Uttar Pradesh. It is prepared by blending of khoa and sugar followed by heat desiccation until characteristic reddish brown colour appears. It is a nutritive, palatable and a very good source of energy. In order to commercially manufacture and market lal peda, studies on its shelf-life were considered to be very important. Lal peda samples were packed in paper boxes and stored at two different temperatures i.e. 4 and 37 °C and physico-chemical and sensory changes were monitored during storage period. There was a continuous loss of moisture during storage and rate of loss of moisture was higher at 37 °C. FFA and HMF contents in lal peda increased during storage and these changes were found to be temperature sensitive. Changes in textural properties of lal peda in terms of hardness, springiness, cohesiveness, chewiness and gumminess were also studied. Lal peda samples stored at 4 and 37 °C were acceptable up to 31 days and 9 days, respectively on the basis of textural and sensory attributes. © Association of Food Scientists & Technologists (India) 2012.

    Productivity, nitrogen balance and economics of winter maize (Zea mays) as influenced by QPM cultivars and nitrogen levels

    The experimental findings suggests that SEEDTEC 2324 proved superior over other cultivars for increasing yield of winter maize and application of 240 kg N/ha was found most suitable for achieving higher yield and profitability of winter maize in eastern Uttar Pradesh conditions. Further investigations are required to bring yields of QPM cultivars at par with the best normal endosperm cultivars.

    Response of nitrogen and sulphur levels on productivity and profitability of QPM hybrid (Zea mays) under dryland condition of Eastern Uttar Pradesh

    A field experiments was conducted during, 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 at Varanasi , under dryland condition to assess the growth, yield, quality, nutrient content and economics of QPM hybrids (Zea mays L.) under different nitrogen and sulphur levels. Twenty four treatment combination arranged in split plot design replicated three times with four nitrogen levels control, 50 kg N/ha, 100 kg N/ha and 150 kg N/ha in main plot treatments, two QPM hybrids Shaktiman-2 and Shaktiman-4 and three sulphur levels 15 kg S/ha, 30 kg S/ha and 45 kg S/ha as sub-plot treatments. Significant differences were observed among the treatments for all the parameters studied. Dry matter accumulation (g/plant), cob diameter (cm), test weight, protein content (%), protein yield (q/ha), N, P2O5, K2O and S content in plant was increased significantly as a result of nitrogen and sulphur levels. Application of 150 kg N/ha recorded significantly higher grain yield 43.94% and 43.43% over 0 kg N/ha in 1st and 2nd years, respectively. The highest net return (65.76% and 64.07%) and B: C ratio (39.08% and 38.72%) was recorded under 150 kg N/ha in 1st and 2nd years, respectively over 0 kg N/ha. QPM hybrid, Shaktiman-4 proved significantly higher growth, yield attributes, quality, net return and B: C ratio compared to Shaktiman-2. Shaktiman-4 recorded 3.55% and 2.62% higher grain yield over Shaktiman-2 in 1st and 2nd years, respectively. Application of 45 kg S/ha obtained 10.77% and 10.25% highest grain yield during 1st and 2nd years, respectively over 15 kg S/ha. The highest net return (12.56% and 11.69%) and B: C ratio (3.15% and 3.52%) was recorded under 45 kg S/ha in 1st and 2nd years, respectively over 15 kg S/ha.
