Molecular Aspects of Zinc Homeostasis in Plants: Zinc Deficit and Surplus Conditions
(Springer Science+Business Media, 2025) Komal Dubey; S. Srivastava
Zinc (Zn), classified as a micronutrient, plays a critical role in plant health, soil quality, and plant-microbe interactions. Despite high total zinc content in soils, many regions globally experience low plant-available zinc, and this affects crop quality and subsequently compromises human health. The optimum zinc nutrition of plants and zinc content of grains can be achieved if the detailed mechanisms of zinc uptake and transport to different organs and cellular organelles are known. A number of zinc transporters along with some zinc regulatory elements have been identified and characterized in plants over the years. It is understood that plants sense free zinc ion concentrations in cellular environment and accordingly activate or deactivate various zinc-responsive genes for maintaining optimum zinc levels. However, there are several unknown facts. For example, there are some zinc-responsive genes whose expression is linked to zinc levels, but the signal regulating them is not known. Additionally, there are other genes whose expression is not linked to zinc status and they may be subjected to other regulatory elements. This chapter aims to summarize up-to-date information with regard to zinc homeostasis in both zinc-deficient and zinc-sufficient conditions in plants. © 2025 The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
