Paradigm Shift of Religious Tourism in South Asia
(World Scientific Publishing Co., 2025) Shikha Misra
This chapter engages in a discussion of the existing status of religious tourism in South Asia and explores the new paradigms that are evolving to provide a more wholesome and personalisation experience to the tourists visiting the region. There is a significant shift in the interests of tourists from monumental tourism to religious, spiritual and experiential tourism worldwide. The author has come to understand that religious tourism has been upgrading, transforming and adding new components to create better communitas for the religious tourist and increasing the footfall and night stays at religious destinations. Some of the newly added components are use of artificial intelligence to create a personal experience, better infrastructure and superstructures, improved connectivity to the destinations and sites, risk mitigation to minimise human and financial losses and handling the crisis situations by increasing the involvement of stakeholders and by providing regular security drills to them. Change in the temple governance and better backward linkages to make paraphernalia a more pro-poor activity are also two major changes resulting in faster decision-making and availability of better financial resources. This chapter considers religious tourism beyond the continuum of tourism, religious tourism and pilgrimage. It has drawn on a multidisciplinary approach and also provides details on the developments and innovations being applied at religious destinations in the South Asian region, primarily during the last 10 years. © 2025 by World Scientific Publishing Co.
