    Dogs as Reservoirs for Leishmania donovani, Bihar, India, 2018–2022

    Visceral leishmaniasis derived from Leishmania donovani is transmitted by sand flies (Phlebotomus argentipes) throughout the Indian subcontinent. Although considered anthroponotic, L. donovani infects other mammals susceptible to sand fly bites, including dogs. Aggressive strategies to reduce sand fly populations in India have led to flies seeking nonhuman hosts, so understanding the role of dogs in L. donovani transmission has become critical. Our study investigated L. donovani infection in dogs and the potential for such infections to be transmitted back to sand flies. We performed xenodiagnosis by using P. argentipes on dogs (n = 73) with quantitative PCR–detectible parasitemia in both endemic and outbreak villages. We found that 12% (9/73) of dogs were infectious to sand flies during winter and rainy seasons. Patients with visceral leishmaniasis remain primary sources of L. donovani transmission, but our findings suggest a possible link between canine infection and human exposure. © 2024 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).     Gain enhancement of annular ring antenna using stacking and air gaps

    In the present research the annular ring microstrip antenna is comprehensively analysed for gain enhancement in higher order modes. Several techniques such as stacking and introducing air gap have been used to increase the gain. Annular ring antenna has been chosen for its high gain and compact size in comparison to other patch antennas. Due to higher mode excitation the antennas exhibit a maximum power at angles other than 0° (30°, 45°, 60°).Theoretical analysis, simulation results and experimental observations are all in good agreement showing an increase in gain. Two different dielectrics (εr = 2.32, εr = 4.4) are chosen and comparison done to get an optimum high gain annular ring antenna. © 2011 Praise Worthy Prize S.r.l. - All rights reserved.

    Impact of climate change on mental health

    Climate change is one of the major problems of our day. Everyone on the planet shares concerns about how climate change may affect exposed physical creatures and cultures at risk. Several natural disasters, heat waves, hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, droughts, fires, melting glaciers and forests, disappearing rivers, and desertification, can be directly or indirectly linked to human physical and mental problems. The intricate relationship between climate change and mental health is explored in this chapter, with a focus on the grave repercussions that environmental degradation has for people's individual and collective well-being. The first section of the chapter provides a thorough overview of climate change and its underlying causes, emphasizing the significance and reach of this worldwide issue. It examines the relationship between mental health and the physical effects of climate change, such as harsh weather, rising temperatures, and changing ecosystems. The cultural and sociological aspects of how the environment affects the mind are also covered in this chapter. It examines how changes in weather patterns and environmental stressors can deepen the social gaps that already exist and increase the disparity in mental health across marginalized groups. It also examines the potential psychological ramifications of migration and relocation due to climate change, highlighting the challenges faced by people and communities having to adapt to changing conditions. © 2026 Elsevier Inc.
