PublicationArticle Anticarcinogenic activity of blue fluorescent hexagonal boron nitride quantum dots: as an effective enhancer for DNA cleavage activity of anticancer drug doxorubicin(Elsevier B.V., 2019) S. Umrao; A.K. Maurya; V. Shukla; A. Grigoriev; R. Ahuja; M. Vinayak; R.R. Srivastava; P.S. Saxena; I.-K. Oh; A. SrivastavaBlue fluorescent hexagonal boron nitride quantum dots (h-BNQDs) of ∼10 nm size as an effective enhancer for DNA cleavage activity of anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) were synthesized using simple one-step hydrothermal disintegration of exfoliated hexagonal boron nitride at very low temperature ∼ 120 °C. Boron nitride quantum dots (BNQDs) at a concentration of 25 μg/ml enhanced DNA cleavage activity of DOX up to 70% as checked by converting supercoiled fragment into nicked circular PBR322 DNA. The interaction of BNQDs with DOX is proportional to the concentration of BNQDs, with binding constant Kb ∼0.07338 μg/ml. In addition, ab initio theoretical results indicate that DOX is absorbed on BNQDs at the N-terminated edge with binding energy −1.075 eV and prevented the normal replication mechanisms in DNA. BNQDs have been shown to kill the breast cancer cell MCF-7 extensively as compared with the normal human keratinocyte cell HaCaT. The cytotoxicity of BNQDs may be correlated with reduced reactive oxygen species level and increased apoptosis in MCF-7 cells, which may be liable to enhance the anticancerous activity of DOX. The results provide a base to develop BNQD-DOX as a more effective anticancer drug. © 2019PublicationArticle Comparative assessment of imaging modalities in biliary obstruction(Georg Thieme Verlag, 2006) V. Upadhyaya; D. Upadhyaya; M. Ansari; V. ShuklaBackground: Many imaging modalities are available today for the evaluation of patients with suspected biliary obstruction including Ultrasonography, Computed Tomography and Invasive cholangiography. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography is a relatively new technique, which has gained popularity because of its excellent diagnostic capabilities in the evaluation of biliary obstruction. Aims: The aim of the present study was to compare the diagnostic accuracy of Ultrasonography, Computed Tomography, Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography/ Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography and Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography in assessing the level and cause of obstruction in patients with obstructive jaundice. Patients & Methods: One hundred patients with clinical and laboratory features suggestive of biliary obstruction were included in this study. At least two imaging modalities were used in each patient. The level and cause of obstruction was evaluated by each modality. The findings were corroborated with the operative and/or histopathological findings. Results: Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography showed the best results in detecting the cause of obstruction and was second only to Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography in detecting the level of biliary obstruction. Conclusions: With its excellent diagnostic capabilities, Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography has certainly carved a niche for itself in the non-invasive evaluation of the patient with obstructive jaundice.PublicationArticle Improved de/re-hydrogenation properties of MgH2 catalyzed by graphene templated Ti–Ni–Fe nanoparticles(Elsevier Ltd, 2022) Pawan K. Soni; A. Bhatnagar; V. Shukla; M.A. ShazThe present investigation deals with the excellent catalytic effect of graphene templated Ti–Ni–Fe nanoparticles (Ti–Ni–Fe@Gr) on de/re-hydrogenation characteristics of MgH2. The catalytic effect of Ti–Ni–Fe@Gr on MgH2 has also been compared with Ti@Gr, Ni@Gr, and Fe@Gr. It has been found that Ti–Ni–Fe@Gr lowers the onset desorption temperature up to 252 °C with improved kinetics and cyclability for the hydrogen release and absorption from MgH2. The presence of a multivalence environment around Mg/MgH2 has been analyzed by XPS analysis which gives the evidence of possible electronic exchange between the catalyst and Mg/MgH2 during de-/rehydrogenation. Since Mg/MgH2 and Ti–Ni–Fe are both anchored on graphene template, agglomeration detrimental to cycling is not possible. Thus negligible degradation of 0.22 wt% has been observed even after 24 cycles of de/re-hydrogenation. © 2022PublicationArticle Primary high-grade testicular leiomyosarcoma(2009) Mohan Kumar; Shashikant Patne; Sandip Kumar; V. ShuklaWe herein present an extremely rare occurrence of primary intratesticular leiomyosarcoma. A 65-year-old patient presented with painless enlargement of the right testis. A high inguinal orchiectomy was done. Histopathological examination of the excised mass was consistent with high-grade leiomyosarcoma. Pertinent literature is reviewed and the importance of excluding the germ cell tumor and the paratesticular neoplasm is emphasized.
