    Anthropogenic Stress and Phenolic Compounds: An Environmental Robustness Diagnostics Compound Family in Stress Ameliorations

    Natural ecosystems are progressively vulnerable to a number of multiple anthropogenic stressors, particularly with water, ozone, air pollutants, pesticides, heavy metals (HMs), deforestation, artificial lightening, agriculture intensification, and land use pattern changes. All of them have risen in ecosystem imbalance, climate change, global warming, and many other natural disasters as abiotic stresses. These stressors cause imbalance in physiological, biochemical, and molecular traits at different levels and under different environmental components, which they are subjected. Therefore, to diminish the catastrophic consequences on ecological sustainability, the present chapter focuses on the role and mechanisms of secondary metabolites (SMs) especially phenolic compounds (PCs) for environmental robustness diagnostics via adaption or avoidance from these stressors. The prime objective of this chapter tends to explore the functions and responses of PCs in respect to elevated CO2 (eCO2), heavy metal (HM) stress, salinity, pollutant translocations, and transformations in ecosystem. For instance, it will help in understanding the different anthropogenic stressors, their impact on environmental components, PC response, and pathway or mechanisms by which these PCs nullify the drastic consequences of anthropogenic stressors. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2023.

    Cadmium toxicity in plants and alleviation through seed priming approach

    Heavy metals (Cd) contamination of soil and water due to anthropogenic activity, causing toxicity/stress, has potential to turn down the crop productivity and quality globally. Cd affects the fundamental and crucial processes of plants from seed germination to grain maturity, among them antioxidant defense and photosynthesis are prime one. Recent development in various disciplines of agricultural and biological sciences such as molecular breeding, integrative multiomics, and advance agronomical technology involved in heavy metal tolerance, although they are limited to lab conditions or less popular among farmers fields. Therefore, seed priming is promising and versatile approach to heavy metal stress tolerance. Seed priming with various organic and inorganic salts (CaCl2, Mg (NO3)2, proline), plant growth regulators (auxin, gibberellins, salicylic acid), showed the promising results in counteracts the effect of Cd. Seed priming involve in improvements of seed germination, seedling establishment, antioxidant defense, water and mineral nutrition, and carrying stress memory in progenies. To consider the above points, this review summarizes the effect of Cd toxicity on plant system and mineral nutrition. We also provide a glance of seed priming technology in respect to Cd stress tolerance at physiological, biochemical and molecular levels at different plant growth stages. © 2021, Indian Society for Plant Physiology.

    Crucial Cell Signaling Compounds Crosstalk and Integrative Multi-Omics Techniques for Salinity Stress Tolerance in Plants

    In the era of rapid climate change, abiotic stresses are the primary cause for yield gap in major agricultural crops. Among them, salinity is considered a calamitous stress due to its global distribution and consequences. Salinity affects plant processes and growth by imposing osmotic stress and destroys ionic and redox signaling. It also affects phytohormone homeostasis, which leads to oxidative stress and eventually imbalances metabolic activity. In this situation, signaling compound crosstalk such as gasotransmitters [nitric oxide (NO), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), calcium (Ca), reactive oxygen species (ROS)] and plant growth regulators (auxin, ethylene, abscisic acid, and salicylic acid) have a decisive role in regulating plant stress signaling and administer unfavorable circumstances including salinity stress. Moreover, recent significant progress in omics techniques (transcriptomics, genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics) have helped to reinforce the deep understanding of molecular insight in multiple stress tolerance. Currently, there is very little information on gasotransmitters and plant growth regulator crosstalk and inadequacy of information regarding the integration of multi-omics technology during salinity stress. Therefore, there is an urgent need to understand the crucial cell signaling crosstalk mechanisms and integrative multi-omics techniques to provide a more direct approach for salinity stress tolerance. To address the above-mentioned words, this review covers the common mechanisms of signaling compounds and role of different signaling crosstalk under salinity stress tolerance.     Efficient removal of endocrine disrupting compounds 17 α-ethynyl estradiol and 17 β-estradiol by Enterobacter sp. strain BHUBP7 and elucidation of the degradation pathway by HRAMS analysis

    Owing to the increased population and their overuse, estrogens are being detected in the environment at alarming levels. They act as endocrine disrupting compounds (EDC’s) posing adverse effects on animals and humans. In this study, a strain belonging to Enterobacter sp. strain BHUBP7 was recovered from a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) situated in Varanasi city, U.P., India, and was capable of metabolizing both 17 α-Ethynylestradiol (EE2) and 17 β-Estradiol (E2) separately as a sole carbon source. The strain BHUBP7 exhibited high rates of E2 degradation as compared to EE2 degradation. The degradation of E2 (10 mg/L) was 94.3% after four days of incubation, whereas the degradation of EE2 (10 mg/L) under similar conditions was 98% after seven days of incubation. The kinetics of EE2 and E2 degradation fitted well with the first-order reaction rate. FTIR analysis revealed the involvement of functional groups like C = O, C–C, C–OH during the degradation process. The metabolites generated during degradation of EE2 and E2 were identified using HRAMS and a plausible pathway was elucidated. It was observed that metabolism of both E2 and EE2 proceeded with the formation of estrone, which was then hydroxylated to 4-hydroxy estrone, followed by ring opening at the C4–C5 position, and was further metabolized by the 4,5 seco pathway leading to the formation of 3-(7a-methyl-1,5-dioxooctahydro-1H-inden-4-yl) propanoic acid (HIP). It is the first report on the complete pathway of EE2 and E2 degradation in Enterobacter sp. strain BHUBP7. Moreover, the formation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) during the degradation of EE2 and E2 was observed. It was concluded that both hormones elicited the generation of oxidative stress in the bacterium during the degradation process. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V.

    Background: While there is a long history of measuring death and disability from injuries, modern research methods must account for the wide spectrum of disability that can occur in an injury, and must provide estimates with sufficient demographic, geographical and temporal detail to be useful for policy makers. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017 study used methods to provide highly detailed estimates of global injury burden that meet these criteria. Methods: In this study, we report and discuss the methods used in GBD 2017 for injury morbidity and mortality burden estimation. In summary, these methods included estimating cause-specific mortality for every cause of injury, and then estimating incidence for every cause of injury. Non-fatal disability for each cause is then calculated based on the probabilities of suffering from different types of bodily injury experienced. Results: GBD 2017 produced morbidity and mortality estimates for 38 causes of injury. Estimates were produced in terms of incidence, prevalence, years lived with disability, cause-specific mortality, years of life lost and disability-adjusted life-years for a 28-year period for 22 age groups, 195 countries and both sexes. Conclusions: GBD 2017 demonstrated a complex and sophisticated series of analytical steps using the largest known database of morbidity and mortality data on injuries. GBD 2017 results should be used to help inform injury prevention policy making and resource allocation.     Evaluation of atmospheric precipitable water vapour distribution and trend over India

    Integrated Precipitable Water Vapor (IPWV) wields significant influence over atmospheric processes, the climate system, and the hydrological cycle. Spatial and temporal variability characterizes water vapor distribution in the atmosphere, with equatorial regions registering elevated water vapor percentages. There are various types of instruments and methods to assess the quantity of moisture in the air. Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and radiosonde techniques have been widely used to estimate IPWV in the atmosphere. European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Re-Analysis (ERA-5) is the latest reanalysis IPWV dataset. This study aims to assess the congruence of ERA-5-derived IPWV with GNSS-derived IPWV and study the spatial and temporal variability of IPWV over Indian region. The IPWV data from 16 monitoring stations of GNSS Atmosphere Water Vapor Watch Network of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) have been compared with ERA-5 data. The IPWV data from GNSS and ERA-5 are in excellent agreement as corroborated by correlation coefficients spanning 0.97 to 1.00 and the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) values varying between 1.5 mm and 5.6 mm. IPWV values exhibit prominent seasonal variations, with minimum values during the winter months and peak appears between June and September, aligning with warm and moist monsoon season of India. The ERA5 data from 1981 to 2020 were used to study variability and trend over Indian region. Strong positive correlations are observed between rainfall and IPWV. The results indicated IPWV trends are moistening especially over Indian landmass, the Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal during all the seasons except winter. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Austria, part of Springer Nature 2024.

    Event based robust action for fault restrained secondary control of DC microgrid

    In modern power grid, dc microgrid is widely investigated to enhance their performance capabilities and operating ranges. The main issue in the operation of dc microgrid is to ensure adequate current sharing between converters, which can be achieved by droop control phenomena. Current sharing in the dc microgrid caused voltage discrepancy that needs to be compensated simultaneously with the current sharing. In this paper distributed secondary control to compensate voltage variation under converter current sharing through consensus-based sliding mode control (SMC) is proposed. Fault tolerant control is designed by formulating optimal control computation as per event triggering law. To achieve consensus control, communication graph theory is utilized to stabilizes required communication pattern between converters. Rigorous Lyapunov based stability bounds are derived to achieve event control to compensate actuator fault. Simulations are conducted to validate the feasibility and efficacy of the proposed control scheme. © 2021 IEEE

    Fractional order control with super twisting observer for AC microgrid

    In this paper, a fractional-order continuous control with a modified super twisting disturbance observer (STDO) for a microgrid (MG) is proposed. Transient accuracy under finite-time control is a challenging issue in Islanded MG with strong disturbance rejection. sliding mode control (SMC) with conventional Sliding surface design exhibits asymptotic response with chattering contamination in the control signal. If the terminal surface is used for finite-time control, singularity and chattering problem may occur. In order to achieve chattering free finite time response with no singularity problem, fractional second-order continuous control (FSCC) is proposed with STDO. In this paper, FSCC is primarily designed to improve transient response with finite-time control. Next, STDO is utilized to achieve strong robustness against disturbance with comprehensive chattering elimination by adding a fractional term. To capitalize on optimal control effort, event-triggering control is implemented. Stability proof and event trigger conditions are derived using rigorous Lyapunov based analysis. The efficacy of the proposed controller is tested under MATLAB/Simulink. © 2021 IEEE.

    Functional metagenomics: A potential tool for mining of biomolecules from environmental samples

    Functional metagenomics is emerging as a transformative tool for discovering biomolecules from environmental samples, offering unprecedented insights into microbial diversity and functionality. This review explores the potential of functional metagenomics to uncover novel enzymes, antibiotics, and therapeutic compounds by analyzing environmental DNA (eDNA) without the constraints of traditional culture-based methods. The vast microbial biomass in diverse ecosystems, from soil to extreme habitats, harbors a wealth of genetic resources that can be harnessed for biotechnological applications. Researchers can use modern sequencing techniques and functional screening approaches to find and characterize genes with advantageous features, such as bioremediation capacities and industrially relevant enzymes. Despite challenges in DNA extraction and host expression systems, integrating functional metagenomics with multi-omics approaches promises to enhance our understanding of microbial interactions and facilitate the development of eco-friendly bioprocesses. This review underscores the importance of functional metagenomics in expanding our repertoire of biomolecules and highlights its potential to significantly impact biotechnology and environmental sustainability. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.

    Genetic divergence analysis in Indian mustard [Brassica juncea (L.) Czern & Coss.]

    Genetic diversity analysis in Indian mustard (Brassica juncea (L.) Czern & Coss.) was carried out by using Mahalanobis D2 analysis. Thirty genotypes were grouped into IV clusters for different quality characters. Cluster IV genotypes showed maximum value for plant height (185.73), number of secondary branches per plant (32.55) and days to 50% flowering (71.23). Whereas genotypes of cluster III showed maximum value for seed yield per plant (28.36 g), number of pods per plant (728.12) and chlorophyll content (3.60). Cluster recorded genotypes with lowest mean values for days to 50% flowering (54.00). Plant height contributed the maximum to the total divergence (40.5%) followed by days to maturity. The clustering pattern did not establish clear-cut relationship between genetic diversity and geographical diversity. The cultivars included in the diverse clusters can be used as promising parents for hybridization programme for obtaining high hetaeristic responses and thus better segregates in Indian mustard.

    Background: In an era of shifting global agendas and expanded emphasis on non-communicable diseases and injuries along with communicable diseases, sound evidence on trends by cause at the national level is essential. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) provides a systematic scientific assessment of published, publicly available, and contributed data on incidence, prevalence, and mortality for a mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive list of diseases and injuries. Methods: GBD estimates incidence, prevalence, mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) due to 369 diseases and injuries, for two sexes, and for 204 countries and territories. Input data were extracted from censuses, household surveys, civil registration and vital statistics, disease registries, health service use, air pollution monitors, satellite imaging, disease notifications, and other sources. Cause-specific death rates and cause fractions were calculated using the Cause of Death Ensemble model and spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression. Cause-specific deaths were adjusted to match the total all-cause deaths calculated as part of the GBD population, fertility, and mortality estimates. Deaths were multiplied by standard life expectancy at each age to calculate YLLs. A Bayesian meta-regression modelling tool, DisMod-MR 2.1, was used to ensure consistency between incidence, prevalence, remission, excess mortality, and cause-specific mortality for most causes. Prevalence estimates were multiplied by disability weights for mutually exclusive sequelae of diseases and injuries to calculate YLDs. We considered results in the context of the Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a composite indicator of income per capita, years of schooling, and fertility rate in females younger than 25 years. Uncertainty intervals (UIs) were generated for every metric using the 25th and 975th ordered 1000 draw values of the posterior distribution. Findings: Global health has steadily improved over the past 30 years as measured by age-standardised DALY rates. After taking into account population growth and ageing, the absolute number of DALYs has remained stable. Since 2010, the pace of decline in global age-standardised DALY rates has accelerated in age groups younger than 50 years compared with the 1990–2010 time period, with the greatest annualised rate of decline occurring in the 0–9-year age group. Six infectious diseases were among the top ten causes of DALYs in children younger than 10 years in 2019: lower respiratory infections (ranked second), diarrhoeal diseases (third), malaria (fifth), meningitis (sixth), whooping cough (ninth), and sexually transmitted infections (which, in this age group, is fully accounted for by congenital syphilis; ranked tenth). In adolescents aged 10–24 years, three injury causes were among the top causes of DALYs: road injuries (ranked first), self-harm (third), and interpersonal violence (fifth). Five of the causes that were in the top ten for ages 10–24 years were also in the top ten in the 25–49-year age group: road injuries (ranked first), HIV/AIDS (second), low back pain (fourth), headache disorders (fifth), and depressive disorders (sixth). In 2019, ischaemic heart disease and stroke were the top-ranked causes of DALYs in both the 50–74-year and 75-years-and-older age groups. Since 1990, there has been a marked shift towards a greater proportion of burden due to YLDs from non-communicable diseases and injuries. In 2019, there were 11 countries where non-communicable disease and injury YLDs constituted more than half of all disease burden. Decreases in age-standardised DALY rates have accelerated over the past decade in countries at the lower end of the SDI range, while improvements have started to stagnate or even reverse in countries with higher SDI. Interpretation: As disability becomes an increasingly large component of disease burden and a larger component of health expenditure, greater research and development investment is needed to identify new, more effective intervention strategies. With a rapidly ageing global population, the demands on health services to deal with disabling outcomes, which increase with age, will require policy makers to anticipate these changes. The mix of universal and more geographically specific influences on health reinforces the need for regular reporting on population health in detail and by underlying cause to help decision makers to identify success stories of disease control to emulate, as well as opportunities to improve.     Background: Rigorous analysis of levels and trends in exposure to leading risk factors and quantification of their effect on human health are important to identify where public health is making progress and in which cases current efforts are inadequate. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 provides a standardised and comprehensive assessment of the magnitude of risk factor exposure, relative risk, and attributable burden of disease. Methods: GBD 2019 estimated attributable mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), years of life lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) for 87 risk factors and combinations of risk factors, at the global level, regionally, and for 204 countries and territories. GBD uses a hierarchical list of risk factors so that specific risk factors (eg, sodium intake), and related aggregates (eg, diet quality), are both evaluated. This method has six analytical steps. (1) We included 560 risk–outcome pairs that met criteria for convincing or probable evidence on the basis of research studies. 12 risk–outcome pairs included in GBD 2017 no longer met inclusion criteria and 47 risk–outcome pairs for risks already included in GBD 2017 were added based on new evidence. (2) Relative risks were estimated as a function of exposure based on published systematic reviews, 81 systematic reviews done for GBD 2019, and meta-regression. (3) Levels of exposure in each age-sex-location-year included in the study were estimated based on all available data sources using spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression, DisMod-MR 2.1, a Bayesian meta-regression method, or alternative methods. (4) We determined, from published trials or cohort studies, the level of exposure associated with minimum risk, called the theoretical minimum risk exposure level. (5) Attributable deaths, YLLs, YLDs, and DALYs were computed by multiplying population attributable fractions (PAFs) by the relevant outcome quantity for each age-sex-location-year. (6) PAFs and attributable burden for combinations of risk factors were estimated taking into account mediation of different risk factors through other risk factors. Across all six analytical steps, 30 652 distinct data sources were used in the analysis. Uncertainty in each step of the analysis was propagated into the final estimates of attributable burden. Exposure levels for dichotomous, polytomous, and continuous risk factors were summarised with use of the summary exposure value to facilitate comparisons over time, across location, and across risks. Because the entire time series from 1990 to 2019 has been re-estimated with use of consistent data and methods, these results supersede previously published GBD estimates of attributable burden. Findings: The largest declines in risk exposure from 2010 to 2019 were among a set of risks that are strongly linked to social and economic development, including household air pollution; unsafe water, sanitation, and handwashing; and child growth failure. Global declines also occurred for tobacco smoking and lead exposure. The largest increases in risk exposure were for ambient particulate matter pollution, drug use, high fasting plasma glucose, and high body-mass index. In 2019, the leading Level 2 risk factor globally for attributable deaths was high systolic blood pressure, which accounted for 10·8 million (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 9·51–12·1) deaths (19·2% [16·9–21·3] of all deaths in 2019), followed by tobacco (smoked, second-hand, and chewing), which accounted for 8·71 million (8·12–9·31) deaths (15·4% [14·6–16·2] of all deaths in 2019). The leading Level 2 risk factor for attributable DALYs globally in 2019 was child and maternal malnutrition, which largely affects health in the youngest age groups and accounted for 295 million (253–350) DALYs (11·6% [10·3–13·1] of all global DALYs that year). The risk factor burden varied considerably in 2019 between age groups and locations. Among children aged 0–9 years, the three leading detailed risk factors for attributable DALYs were all related to malnutrition. Iron deficiency was the leading risk factor for those aged 10–24 years, alcohol use for those aged 25–49 years, and high systolic blood pressure for those aged 50–74 years and 75 years and older. Interpretation: Overall, the record for reducing exposure to harmful risks over the past three decades is poor. Success with reducing smoking and lead exposure through regulatory policy might point the way for a stronger role for public policy on other risks in addition to continued efforts to provide information on risk factor harm to the general public.     Background Past research in population health trends has shown that injuries form a substantial burden of population health loss. Regular updates to injury burden assessments are critical. We report Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017 Study estimates on morbidity and mortality for all injuries. methods We reviewed results for injuries from the GBD 2017 study. GBD 2017 measured injury-specific mortality and years of life lost (YLLs) using the Cause of Death Ensemble model. To measure non-fatal injuries, GBD 2017 modelled injury-specific incidence and converted this to prevalence and years lived with disability (YLDs). YLLs and YLDs were summed to calculate disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Findings In 1990, there were 4 260 493 (4 085 700 to 4 396 138) injury deaths, which increased to 4 484 722 (4 332 010 to 4 585 554) deaths in 2017, while age-standardised mortality decreased from 1079 (1073 to 1086) to 738 (730 to 745) per 100 000. In 1990, there were 354 064 302 (95% uncertainty interval: 338 174 876 to 371 610 802) new cases of injury globally, which increased to 520 710 288 (493 430 247 to 547 988 635) new cases in 2017. During this time, age-standardised incidence decreased non-significantly from 6824 (6534 to 7147) to 6763 (6412 to 7118) per 100 000. Between 1990 and 2017, age-standardised DALYs decreased from 4947 (4655 to 5233) per 100 000 to 3267 (3058 to 3505). Interpretation Injuries are an important cause of health loss globally, though mortality has declined between 1990 and 2017. Future research in injury burden should focus on prevention in high-burden populations, improving data collection and ensuring access to medical care. © Author(s) (or their employer(s)) 2020.     Background: Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Given the recent increasing trends in colorectal cancer incidence globally, up-to-date information on the colorectal cancer burden could guide screening, early detection, and treatment strategies, and help effectively allocate resources. We examined the temporal patterns of the global, regional, and national burden of colorectal cancer and its risk factors in 204 countries and territories across the past three decades. Methods: Estimates of incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) for colorectal cancer were generated as a part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 by age, sex, and geographical location for the period 1990–2019. Mortality estimates were produced using the cause of death ensemble model. We also calculated DALYs attributable to risk factors that had evidence of causation with colorectal cancer. Findings: Globally, between 1990 and 2019, colorectal cancer incident cases more than doubled, from 842 098 (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 810 408–868 574) to 2·17 million (2·00–2·34), and deaths increased from 518 126 (493 682–537 877) to 1·09 million (1·02–1·15). The global age-standardised incidence rate increased from 22·2 (95% UI 21·3–23·0) per 100 000 to 26·7 (24·6–28·9) per 100 000, whereas the age-standardised mortality rate decreased from 14·3 (13·5–14·9) per 100 000 to 13·7 (12·6–14·5) per 100 000 and the age-standardised DALY rate decreased from 308·5 (294·7–320·7) per 100 000 to 295·5 (275·2–313·0) per 100 000 from 1990 through 2019. Taiwan (province of China; 62·0 [48·9–80·0] per 100 000), Monaco (60·7 [48·5–73·6] per 100 000), and Andorra (56·6 [42·8–71·9] per 100 000) had the highest age-standardised incidence rates, while Greenland (31·4 [26·0–37·1] per 100 000), Brunei (30·3 [26·6–34·1] per 100 000), and Hungary (28·6 [23·6–34·0] per 100 000) had the highest age-standardised mortality rates. From 1990 through 2019, a substantial rise in incidence rates was observed in younger adults (age <50 years), particularly in high Socio-demographic Index (SDI) countries. Globally, a diet low in milk (15·6%), smoking (13·3%), a diet low in calcium (12·9%), and alcohol use (9·9%) were the main contributors to colorectal cancer DALYs in 2019. Interpretation: The increase in incidence rates in people younger than 50 years requires vigilance from researchers, clinicians, and policy makers and a possible reconsideration of screening guidelines. The fast-rising burden in low SDI and middle SDI countries in Asia and Africa calls for colorectal cancer prevention approaches, greater awareness, and cost-effective screening and therapeutic options in these regions.     Importance: Cancer and other noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are now widely recognized as a threat to global development. The latest United Nations high-level meeting on NCDs reaffirmed this observation and also highlighted the slow progress in meeting the 2011 Political Declaration on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases and the third Sustainable Development Goal. Lack of situational analyses, priority setting, and budgeting have been identified as major obstacles in achieving these goals. All of these have in common that they require information on the local cancer epidemiology. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study is uniquely poised to provide these crucial data. Objective: To describe cancer burden for 29 cancer groups in 195 countries from 1990 through 2017 to provide data needed for cancer control planning. Evidence Review: We used the GBD study estimation methods to describe cancer incidence, mortality, years lived with disability, years of life lost, and disability-Adjusted life-years (DALYs). Results are presented at the national level as well as by Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a composite indicator of income, educational attainment, and total fertility rate. We also analyzed the influence of the epidemiological vs the demographic transition on cancer incidence. Findings: In 2017, there were 24.5 million incident cancer cases worldwide (16.8 million without nonmelanoma skin cancer [NMSC]) and 9.6 million cancer deaths. The majority of cancer DALYs came from years of life lost (97%), and only 3% came from years lived with disability. The odds of developing cancer were the lowest in the low SDI quintile (1 in 7) and the highest in the high SDI quintile (1 in 2) for both sexes. In 2017, the most common incident cancers in men were NMSC (4.3 million incident cases); tracheal, bronchus, and lung (TBL) cancer (1.5 million incident cases); and prostate cancer (1.3 million incident cases). The most common causes of cancer deaths and DALYs for men were TBL cancer (1.3 million deaths and 28.4 million DALYs), liver cancer (572000 deaths and 15.2 million DALYs), and stomach cancer (542000 deaths and 12.2 million DALYs). For women in 2017, the most common incident cancers were NMSC (3.3 million incident cases), breast cancer (1.9 million incident cases), and colorectal cancer (819000 incident cases). The leading causes of cancer deaths and DALYs for women were breast cancer (601000 deaths and 17.4 million DALYs), TBL cancer (596000 deaths and 12.6 million DALYs), and colorectal cancer (414000 deaths and 8.3 million DALYs). Conclusions and Relevance: The national epidemiological profiles of cancer burden in the GBD study show large heterogeneities, which are a reflection of different exposures to risk factors, economic settings, lifestyles, and access to care and screening. The GBD study can be used by policy makers and other stakeholders to develop and improve national and local cancer control in order to achieve the global targets and improve equity in cancer care. © 2019 American Medical Association.     Impact of an annular solar eclipse on trace gases and meteorological parameters over Jaipur, Northwestern India

    This study aimed to identify the impact of an annular solar eclipse i.e., 21 June 2020 on the variation of meteorological parameters along with trace gases using statistical analyses. The study site is located at Poornima University, Jaipur (26.7796°N, 75.8771°E), Rajasthan, India. The observational analysis indicates a rapid decrease in solar direct radiation (SDR) which varied between 706 and 79 W/m2 during the eclipse. SDR was reduced to 79 W/m2 at the maximum peak of the solar eclipse at 11:55 a.m. at the study location. The comparative analysis shows the variation of SDR during the solar eclipse day, the previous day, and the day after the event. A strong dip was observed in SDR during the annular eclipse day concerning before (734.31 W/m2) and after (734.375 W/m2) eclipse event. Furthermore, the impact of the solar eclipse on temperature (Ts) and Relative Humidity (RH) was analyzed over Jaipur. The statistical analyses demonstrate an apparent decrease in temperature of about 2°C while RH shows a slight increment (3.45%) during the solar eclipse event. The results show an inverse correlation between the solar eclipse and trace gases variations during the eclipse due to the changes in solar radiation, surface temperature, and variation in winds that might affect the photochemical processes.     Aim: The rate and factors that influence progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in developing countries like India are unknown. A pan-country prospective, observational cohort study is needed to address these knowledge gaps. Methods: The Indian Chronic Kidney Disease (ICKD) study will be a cohort study of approximately 5000 patients with mild to moderate CKD presenting to centres that represent different geographical regions in India. Time to 50% decline in baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate, need of renal replacement therapy or any new cardiovascular disease (CVD) event or death from CVD are the primary end points. Value of Study: This study will provide the opportunity to determine risk factors for CKD progression and development of CVD in Indian subjects and perform international comparisons to determine ethnic and geographical differences.     Leveraging machine learning for wind speed prediction in Varanasi: A Path to sustainable energy in the spiritual hub of India

    Varanasi, a major spiritual centre in India, attracted 85,473,633 visitors in 2023, leading to a rise in electricity demand. In response, local authorities focus on renewable energy sources to enhance efficiency and reduce pollution. This study explores wind speed (WS) forecasting as a foundation for wind-based power generation to improve energy management and sustainability. Various machine learning (ML) models, including AdaBoost Regressor, Decision Tree Regressor, K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN), Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks, were tested using meteorological data such as temperature, pressure, and humidity. A hybrid feature selection method was employed, combining correlation matrix, random forest importance, and mutual information. Results showed that LSTM achieved the highest accuracy, while RNN offered a good balance between accuracy and efficiency. The study also emphasises the critical role of pre-processing and feature selection in drastically improving prediction accuracy. Additionally, a techno-economic analysis was conducted to assess the economic viability of wind energy at Varanasi, analysing five wind turbines. The Suzlon S 144 turbine emerged as the most economically viable, with a payback period (PBP) of 9.3 years and a levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of 0.0249 USD/kWh, demonstrating its potential for sustainable energy generation in the region. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd.

    Background: Oral rehydration solution (ORS) is a form of oral rehydration therapy (ORT) for diarrhoea that has the potential to drastically reduce child mortality; yet, according to UNICEF estimates, less than half of children younger than 5 years with diarrhoea in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) received ORS in 2016. A variety of recommended home fluids (RHF) exist as alternative forms of ORT; however, it is unclear whether RHF prevent child mortality. Previous studies have shown considerable variation between countries in ORS and RHF use, but subnational variation is unknown. This study aims to produce high-resolution geospatial estimates of relative and absolute coverage of ORS, RHF, and ORT (use of either ORS or RHF) in LMICs. Methods: We used a Bayesian geostatistical model including 15 spatial covariates and data from 385 household surveys across 94 LMICs to estimate annual proportions of children younger than 5 years of age with diarrhoea who received ORS or RHF (or both) on continuous continent-wide surfaces in 2000–17, and aggregated results to policy-relevant administrative units. Additionally, we analysed geographical inequality in coverage across administrative units and estimated the number of diarrhoeal deaths averted by increased coverage over the study period. Uncertainty in the mean coverage estimates was calculated by taking 250 draws from the posterior joint distribution of the model and creating uncertainty intervals (UIs) with the 2·5th and 97·5th percentiles of those 250 draws. Findings: While ORS use among children with diarrhoea increased in some countries from 2000 to 2017, coverage remained below 50% in the majority (62·6%; 12 417 of 19 823) of second administrative-level units and an estimated 6 519 000 children (95% UI 5 254 000–7 733 000) with diarrhoea were not treated with any form of ORT in 2017. Increases in ORS use corresponded with declines in RHF in many locations, resulting in relatively constant overall ORT coverage from 2000 to 2017. Although ORS was uniformly distributed subnationally in some countries, within-country geographical inequalities persisted in others; 11 countries had at least a 50% difference in one of their units compared with the country mean. Increases in ORS use over time were correlated with declines in RHF use and in diarrhoeal mortality in many locations, and an estimated 52 230 diarrhoeal deaths (36 910–68 860) were averted by scaling up of ORS coverage between 2000 and 2017. Finally, we identified key subnational areas in Colombia, Nigeria, and Sudan as examples of where diarrhoeal mortality remains higher than average, while ORS coverage remains lower than average. Interpretation: To our knowledge, this study is the first to produce and map subnational estimates of ORS, RHF, and ORT coverage and attributable child diarrhoeal deaths across LMICs from 2000 to 2017, allowing for tracking progress over time. Our novel results, combined with detailed subnational estimates of diarrhoeal morbidity and mortality, can support subnational needs assessments aimed at furthering policy makers' understanding of within-country disparities. Over 50 years after the discovery that led to this simple, cheap, and life-saving therapy, large gains in reducing mortality could still be made by reducing geographical inequalities in ORS coverage.
