PublicationArticle Thyroid‐gonad relationship in spotted munia, Uroloncha punctulata(1965) J.P. Thapliyal; S.K. PandhaThyroidectomy of adult Spotted munia (Uroloncha punctulata) leads to the gonads remaining permanently in full breeding condition and is responsible for an early increase in testis size and activity in juvenile birds. These effects may be due to (i) general disturbances in metabolism or (ii) continuous secretion of gonadotropic hormones from the hypopyhsis or (iii) to both of these processes. SenA natural triploid isolated from a diploid population of T. 1242 has been used for establishing trisomics for linkage group studies. The triploid plant when cytologically analysed at pachytene showed chromosomal differences indicating its allo-polyploid nature. The triploid was used as a female parent in triploid-diploid crosses for the synthesis of trisomics. Morphological variations of the trisomics corresponding to chromosomal differences have been studied. Trisomics showed morphological variations with partial sterility. These variations have been found to be associated with specific chromosomes present as extra in these plants. Five out of twelve (n=12) types of chromosomes have been associated with certain diagnostic morphological traits indicating their relationships with specific linkage groups. Correlations of the morphological traits of triploid-diploid progenies in the F2 with their respective chromosomal set up have also been computed with a view to detecting linkage relationships. © 1965, Japan Mendel Society, International Society of Cytology. SinghThe emission spectra of 2-methyl-, 2,5-dimethyl-, 2,5-dichloro-, and 2,6-dichloro-p-benzoquinone in the vapor state have been reported. The spectra of p-quinones were excited by transformer discharge in the presence of flowing vapor of benzene and lay in the region 5100-6850 Å. The bands at 5227, 5163, 5183, and 5392 Å have been identified as the 0-0 bands, respectively. The emissions involve a triplet-singlet (n-Π*) transition in all cases, in the vapor state. © 1965.PublicationLetter Genetic recombination in a blue-green alga, cylindrospermum majus Kuetz. VenugopalanIt is shown that the Joshi effect ±δi, an almost instantaneous and reversible photovariation of the discharge current i, in halogens increases with light intensity I more rapidly at low than at large I, where it exhibits a saturation effect, the applied potential V being constant and just below or well above the threshold potential Vm. At or near Vm, +δi increases with I to a maximum; then diminishes and finally inverts to-δi. This inversion as well as the enhancement in ±δi with light frequency v is linear; the threshold frequency vm decreases with V. For a given minimum I and v, +δi inverts to-δi as V is increased progressively above Vm at the inversion potential Vi. This last decreases with I and v. The inversion with I or v occurs in the potential range Vm/Vi. The results agree with the theory that photoemission from an adsorbed layer with a low work function gives +δi per se.- δi is ascribed to a negative space charge produced near the (instantaneous) cathode. A detailed mechanism for the inversion is proposed. © 1965 Società Italiana di Fisica.PublicationArticle Reaction of Tungsten Pentabromide with Primary Amines(1965) Sarju Prasad; Rajendra SwarupEs wurden die Umsetzungsprodukte des Wolfram(V)‐bromids mit primären Aminen untersucht. ChatterjiThe photosensitive weaver bird (Ploceus philippinus) has a long juvenile phase when, while the bird is insensitive to photostimulation, the gonads respond to injected gonadotrophins. It is suggested that the immature status of the hypothalamo/hypophyseal complex may be responsible for the presence of a long pre‐photoresponsive phase in this bird. SrivastavaAmino‐derivatives of vanadium(IV) are prepared by the action of vanadium(IV) chloride with some secondary and tertiary amines, their properties studied and probable structures discussed. Analytical results reveal that two molecules of the amine are attached to one mole of vanadium(IV) chloride. The study of the amino‐derivatives of vanadium(IV) chloride has been continued using the same methods of investigation as reported in Part I1). These compounds are very similar to the compounds formed with primary amines given in the previous work. The present work deals with the study of the preparation and properties of the compounds of vanadium tetrachloride with secondary and tertiary amines in non‐aqueous media. RajanAn amperometric titration of calcium with selenite is described. Barium, strontium, and other cations forming insoluble selenites interfere, but magnesium does not. The method is rapid and suitable for routine analysis, the error being less than 10 parts per 1000 over the range 50 to 70 mg of calcium. © 1965 Springer-Verlag.PublicationArticle Stacking‐Fault Densities in Silver‐Antimony Alloys(1965) D.H. Ltd, 1965) M.N. Ghosh; Vinod BehariThe theory of linear estimation, when groups of variables have unequal variances was devoloped in Ghosh (1961). Usual least square estimates were shown to possess an optimum property and methods were given for obtaining confidence intervals for linear functions of parameters. Simplified procedures for obtaining such confidence intervals will be considered here and applied to the case of randomised block experiments. © 1965 SAGE Publications.PublicationArticle Imperfections in Copper‐Silicon Filings(1965) P. Rama Rao; T.R. AnantharamanDetailed X‐ray line‐broadening studies are made on deformed filings of Cu96Si4, Cu92Si8, Cu90Si10, and Cu89Si11 alloys. The f.c.c. deformation fault parameters in fresh filings of the first three alloys, in each case of two different grain sizes, are determined by the Paterson method. Stacking‐fault contributions to the observed diffraction broadening are eliminated by a procedure suggested by Christian and Spreadborough, and the domain size and lattice strain effects are separated by single line Fourier analysis. The fresh filings of the two‐phase Cu89Si11 alloy show only the faulted h.c.p. structure, the f.c.c. phase having disappeared during deformation by filing. The fault parameter, domain size, and lattice strain values in the strain‐induced h.c.p. phase are also estimated. Copyright © 1965 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. SinghThe visible emission spectra of p-benzoquinone-H4 and -D4 have been recorded, in the vapour state, in the presence of flowing vapour of toluene. The spectra lie in the region 6843 Å to 5226 Å. The band at 18683 cm-1 has been identified as the OO band for both the p-benzoquinones. The frequencies of p-benzoquinone-D4 show small violet shift relative to the frequencies of p-benzoquinones-H4. The spectra have been analysed with the help of three totally symmetric ground state vibrations: p-benzoquinone-H4/D4: 1675/1667 (CO stretching); 761/735 (ring breathing) and 437/423 (ring deformation, in the molecular plane) cm-1. The emission involves 3Au → 1Ag transition in both cases. © 1965.PublicationArticle A biosynthetic method for preparing 35S-labelled lipoic acid(1965) S.K. Mitra; R.K. Mandal; D.P. Burma[No abstract available]PublicationArticle PublicationArticle On the deduction of silicon-carbide polytypes from screw dislocations(1965) P. Krishna; Ajit Ram VermaMitchell has deduced the polytypic structures that would arise from theoretical screw dislocations in the GH, AH and 15i? phases of silicon carbide, by the spiral-growth mechanism of Frank, and compared these with the structures actually observed. In doing so, he assumed that at the instant of the creation of a screw dislocation, the initial platelet consists of a completed number of unit cells and that the exposed lodge, irrespective of its own structure, can wind over itself in a close-packed manner, thereby repeating its own zig-zag sequence indefinitely during the subsequent spiral growth. It is shown that both these assumptions are not justified and that the use of Zhdanov symbols alone leads to incorrect results. The possible polytypic structures that can be derived from theoretical screw dislocations of different Burgers vectors are rododuced with corrected assumptions, by considering the different possible structures of the exposed lodge in terms of ABC layers and investigating the stacking of these layers during the subsequent spiral growth of the lodge. The results so obtained differ markedly from those of Mitchell. In particular a much larger number of structure series are shown to bo actually possible. The results are compared with the polytypic structures reported so far. © 1965, Walter de Gruyter.
