Gain stability in high-current photomultipliers at high variable counting rates
    (1967) A.K. Gupta; N. Nath
Variations in the gain of 56AVP photomultiplier tubes is studied by changing the counting rates. It is observed that at high counting rates the gain of a photomultiplier tube appreciably increases with increasing counting rate. The energy resolution of the photomultiplier tube is found to deteriorate at high counting rates. It is found that this gain shift is nearly eliminated by keeping the voltages stabilized for the last two stages of the photomultiplier chain. This also helps in maintaining the energy resolution. © 1967.

The thyroid and the hypophysial gonadal axis in the female Spotted Munia, Uroloncha punctulata
    (1967) J.P. Thapliyal; S.K. Pandha
When adult female Spotted Munia (Uroloncha punctulata) are surgically thyroidectomized the diameter of the ovarian follicles and the weight of the body start incrasing, reach a maximum, and then hold a plateau. In the juveniles, while there is an early, though partial, but significant increase in the weight of the body and of the ovary, maximal development occurs only at the approach of the breeding season. Further, although the dark pigment and its deposition pattern on the feathers remain unaffected, in the absence of the thyroids feather growth is retarded and the development of the barbules is inhibited. It is suggested that the effects on the plumage are probably due to an indirect action of the thyroids by way of the body metabolism, but that those on the body weight and ovary are due to the direct influence on the hypothalamo/hypophysial/gonadal axis. © 1967.

Role of Electric Field Generated in the Equatorial Electrojet Region
    (1967) R.N. Singh; K.D. Misra
Adopting an atmospheric model for the sunspot maximum day, the height variation of various ionospheric conductivities have been computed. The electric currents are calculated from yearly averaged magnetic data for the sunspot maximum period in 1958. Using the height integrated Cowling conductivity, electric fields for five selected equatorial and non-equatorial stations have been obtained from the calculated electric currents. The electric currents and electric fields thus obtained have been compared with the electric field derived from the rocket measured electrojet current density. It is shown that such comparisons give good overall agreement of the results obtained from magnetic data and the rocket measurements. The electron temparature is calculated from Joule heating considerations. The resulting electron temparature has been found to be smaller than the rocket measured values, The vertical electron drift velocity produced by the electric field in the electrojet region has been calculated and is found to be higher than the earlier calculation of Hirono and Kitamura (1956) and compares well with the drift velocity values obtained from continuity equation. © 1967, Society of Geomagnetism and Earth, Planetary and Space Sciences. Absorption of Very Low Frequency Waves in the Whistler Mode Propagation at Low Latitudes
    (1967) V.V. Somayajulu; B.A.P. Tantry
Absorption of very low frequency (VLF) waves in the whistler mode of propagation at low geomagnetic latitudes of 24° and 15° have been calculated for various ionospheric conditions during sunspot maxima, average and minima. The very high absorption values of 60 dB, 46 dB, 22 dB at 24° and 104 dB, 90 dB, 42 dB at 15° of VLF waves (10 Kc/s, 5 Kc/s and 1 Kc/s) for two ionospheric paths between 50-200 Km height can explain the non occurrence of whistlers and VLF emissions such as chorus and hiss at low geomagnetic latitudes during day time. The absorption contributed by F-region though generally smaller than that contributed by D and E layers is never negligible and at times of high F-layer concentrations during the magnetic storms the F-layer absorption may even be dominant. The absorption of VLF waves is low at night and as such can not explain the low occurrence of whistlers during night time. However, when the angle between the magnetic field and the wave normal is taken into account it is found that the absorption index increases considerably and hence the whistler energy may not be received on the ground especially at geomagnetic latitudes below 15°. Comparing the computed values of absorption of VLF waves by Altman and Cory at 40° geomagnetic latitude and Laschy at 55° latitude with our values, for low latitudes it is found that the absorption increases rapidly as the latitude decreases which is in conformity with the results of Helliwell and Altman and Cory. © 1967, Society of Geomagnetism and Earth, Planetary and Space Sciences. The near ultraviolet emission spectrum of m-fluorochlorobenzene
    (1967) J.N. Rai; K.N. Upadhya
The emission spectrum of the m-fluorochlorobenzene molecule, obtained by means of a controlled transformer discharge through the flowing vapor of the substance, has been recorded on Zeiss medium quartz spectrograph. It lies in the region 2550-3000 Å with a weak continous background on the short wavelength side and strong background on the longer wavelength side. The vibrational analysis, presented in this paper, assumes four excited state vibrational frequencies 376, 474, 666, and 835 cm-1; eleven ground-state vibrational frequencies 196, 242, 414, 516, 687, 884, 998, 1065, 1139, 1222, and 1426 cm-1 and two difference frequencies 81 and 69 cm-1. © 1967.

Histamine skin sensitivity and blood histamine in patients with urticaria
    (1967) D.N. Prasad; S.S. Gambhir; Gurmohan Singh; S.K. Bhattacharya; P.K. Das
Twenty eight patients with urticaria and 12 normal subjects were investigated. The patients with urticaria showed a significantly higher blood histamine level (0.285±0.004 μg/ml) and reacted more sharply to histamine iontophoresis (5.64±0.32 points) as compared to normal subjects (0.0825±0.01 μ/ml and 1.33±0.44 points respectively). In patients with urticaria there was a rough relationship between blood histamine level and degree of reaction to histamine iontophoresis. There was no significant change in the total leucocyte, differential leucocyte and absolute eosinophil counts in patients with urticaria except the absence of basophil cells. © 1967 S. The preparation and spectroscopic studies of morpholine complexes with some transition metal (II) halides
    (1967) I.S. Ahuja
The preparation of morpholine complexes of manganese (II), cobalt (II), copper (II), zinc (II) and cadmium (II) halides is described. Infrared spectra in the rock salt region indicates that the morpholine is co-ordinated via the nitrogen and not the oxygen atom. Ultraviolet and visible reflectance spectra and the far i.r. spectra have been measured and indicate and essentially octahedral structure for the manganese (II) and cadmium (II) complexes, and a tetrahedral structure for the cobalt (II) and zinc (II) complexes. Possible metal-nitrogen (350-310 cm-1) and metal-halogen modes have been assigned. © 1967.

Lattice Specific Heats of Thallium and Yttrium
    (1967) R.P. Gupta
The lattice specific heats of thallium and yttrium are calculated using the electron gas model of Gupta and Dayal for hexagonal metals. The interactions are restricted to fourth neighbours. The force constants are determined from experimental values of the elastic constants. The θ‐T curves calculated from the computed specific heats show a fairly satisfactory agreement with the experimental values, i.e. the difference is not greater than 3% for thallium and 6% for yttrium. Equation of State of Solid Argon and Krypton
    (1967) N.P. Gupta; B. Dayal
The equation of state, thermal expansion, and isothermal compressibilities of solidified argon and krypton are studied in the harmonic approximation. An exponential interatomic potential is used, and zero‐point quantum effects are included. There is good agreement between the calculated and the observed values.
