SrivastavaThe retrocerebral endocrine organs of the adult lemon-butterfly, Papilio demoleus, have been described. The organs are subaortic lying closely behind the brain. While the nervi corporis cardiaci I (NCCI) originate from the protocerebrum of the brain, the NCCII seem to take their origin in the tritocerebrum in common with another nerve named earlier as the tegumentary nerve. The corpora cardiaca (CC) and corpora allata (CA) are closely approximated to each other obliterating the nervi corporis allati (NCA) which are conspicuous in the larva of the same species. An intercardiacal bridge (ICB) connects the CC of the two sides and acts as a possible centre of distribution for the neurosecretory material (NSM) to the gut. Histological evidence suggests that the NSM inside the CC remains intraaxonal without being primarily unloaded in the organs for storage. The intrinsic secretory cells of the CC are intimately associated with the neurosecretory fibres from the brain and bear fairly thick axons. No NSM could be detected in the CA of this insect.PublicationArticle Chemical constituents of gentianaceae XX: Natural occurrence of (—)‐loliolide in Canscora decussata(1976) S. Ghosal; A.K. Singh; R.K. Chaudhuri(—)‐Loliolide was isolated as a native compound from Canscora decussata Schult (Gentianaceae). Physical and spectral (UV, IR, PMR, CMR, and mass spectra) properties of the compound and its acetate derivative established its identity. The significance of the cooccurrence of loliolide with a number of carotenoids in C. decussata and the facile transformation of violaxanthin into loliolide and violoxin are discussed in the light of the biogenesis of the degraded carotenoid. SinghThe problem of calculating the equilibrium properties of dense fluids in the semiclassical limit when the quantum effects are small is studied. Expressions are given for the pressure, free energy, and the radial distribution function in terms of the properties and correlation functions of the classical system and s-body "modified" Mayer functions Finite Part integral sign1,2,...,ss. It is shown that the correct radial distribution function of a fluid in the semiclassical limit is generated from the classical radial distribution function if we replace in turn each Finite Part integral sign0 bond (Finite Part integral sign12 0 = e-βø(1,2) -1) by an effective Finite Part integral signeff bond, where Finite Part integral signeff = Finite Part integral sign0+(1+Finite Part integral sign 0)Finite Part integral signII +(1+Finite Part integral sign0)(1+Finite Part integral signII)〈 and where 〈 is subset of the line-irreducible graphs each of which contain one Finite Part integral signIII bond. The effective pair bond correct to the second order in thermal wavelength λ ( = {2πℏ2β /m} 1/2) for a fluid of hard spheres is calculated for λ/d = 0.1, and 0.2 at reduced densities ρ* = 0.3 and 0.6. The most striking effect of the quantum mechanics on the structure of a hard-sphere fluid is found at and near the point of contact of the hard spheres. Khanna; K.N. UdupaThe experience in treating three patients with hemangiopericytoma is reviewed. One patient was given irradiation alone, and the others were both treated with surgery and irradiation. Personal experience reinforces reports of the usefulness of irradiation in treating this neoplasm and its metastases.PublicationArticle Role of brain monoamines in the anticonvulsant effect of imipramine in albino rats(1976) S.K. Bhattacharya; S.N. Mukhopadhyay; P.K.S.P. Reddy; P.K. DasThe role of brain monoamines in the anticonvulsant effect of imipramine was investigated in albino rats, against maximal electroshock induced seizures, by using drugs with well defined effects on brain monoamines. The results suggest a definite role for noradrenaline in imipramine anticonvulsant action. Dopamine and 5 hydroxytryptamine do not appear to be involved in this effect of imipramine.PublicationArticle Primary Rhabdomyosarcoma of the Heart: A Case Report, with Autopsy(1976) Sushila Khanna; M.N. Khanna; B.L. Rastogi; V.C. Chaturvedi; S.K. GuptaA case of rhabdomyosarcoma of the heart in a 45‐yeur‐old man is reported. The diagnosis was suspected because of refractory congestive cardiac failure, a bulge on the left cardiac border, and oesophageal displacement, and was confirmed histologically at necropsy. REDDY; GURMOHAN SINGHThe ability of topical corticosteroids to reduce the size of weals induced with histamine on human skin was used as a human bioassay model to assess their relative efficacy. Histamine was introduced by the pinprick method and various topical corticosteroids were assessed. It is a simple, easy and reliable procedure which can be used on both white and dark people. Even though it is a non‐clinical assay, it possesses close similarity to processes involved in the development of clinical dermatoses. Copyright © 1976, Wiley Blackwell. RamakrishnaArticular synovial chondromatosis is a rare disease commonly affecting the knee, hip or elbow, and characterized by the formation of metaplastic cartilaginous foci in the synovium. A case of synovial chondromatosis affecting the shoulder joint is now reported because of the extreme rarity of the disease in this situation.PublicationArticle Aneurysmal bone cyst of scapula(1976) G.C. Pant; B. Sanyal; B.P. Verma; B.L. RastogiThis patient presented with a high swelling over the scapula. The presenting symptoms and radiological appearance were suggestive of aneurysmal bone cyst or giant cell tumor and histology confirmed the diagnosis. It was decided to treat the lesion by radiotherapy following initial surgery. This relieved the symptoms and swelling regressed remarkably. There is no recurrence for a period of 21 months after the initial treatment.PublicationArticle Probable site of action of vitamin D in liver: an ultrastructural study(1976) G.C. Prasad[No abstract available]PublicationArticle Surgical management of pressure sores(1976) J.K. Sinha; F.M. Tripathi; N.N. Khanna; V. VenkateswarluFourteen cases of pressure sores of different sites are dealt with. Seventy percent of the cases developed pressure sores over paralyzed areas. Sacrum and greater trochanter were the common sites of involvement. All these patients were operated upon. The necessity for early surgical intervention in the cases is emphasized. Except for a few minor complications, in the majority of the cases flaps were stable. Long-term follow-up is still awaited which will be published subsequently.PublicationArticle Algal growth as a means of evaluation of nutrient status of the effluent of a fertilizer factory near Shahupuri, Varanasi(1976) L.C. Rai; H.D. KumarThe nutrient status of the effluent of a fertilizer factory has been assayed by growing the unicellular green alga Chlorella sp. and the filamentous blue-green alga Anabaena doliolum as the test organisms. Nitrogen content was estimated by (a) growing Chlorella in different proportions of effluent and culture medium; (b) estimating the rate of NH4-N absorption in the dark by Chlorella cells previously grown in either surplus or limiting nitrogen conditions; and (c) comparing the heterocyst frequencies of Anabaena in nitrogen-free medium and in nitrogen free medium supplemented with effluent. The nutrient status as evaluated by algal assay agrees well with that determined by actual physico-chemical analysis of the effluent.PublicationArticle Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (Gronblad Strandberg syndrome)(1976) B.S.N. Reddy; G. Singh[No abstract available]PublicationArticle Chlamydospore germination in Protomycopsis species(Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1976) M.P. Haware; M.S. PavgiObservations on the sequence of the events in the germination of chlamydospores in Protomycopsis patelii Pavgi and Thirumalachar parasitic on mung beans (Phaseolus mungo L. and Phaseolus radiat us L.) and Protomycopsis thirumalacharii Pavgi on 'Agasta' (Sesbania grandiflora Pers.) are presented. A short-time steep in acidulated water rendered the thick exosporium permeable to water and hastened their germination. Morphology of stages in the sequence of germination, sporogenesis in the vesicles and postemergence development of (endo)spores are described in detail. Probable consequences of aberrant germination types are indicated. © 1976 Kluwer Academic Publishers.PublicationArticle PublicationArticle Visceral anomalies induced by mitomycin C in developing chick embryos(1976) J.D. NaCl, NaF, NaI, KCl, and KI. κT can be theoretically evaluated if the volume dependence of the potential energy Φ of the crystal lattice and the volume derivatives of the frequency spectra are known. Now Φ is taken to be of an exponential form, having two terms of which the first gives the energy due to Coulomb interactions between the ions, and the second one accounts for the overalp interaction energy between the ions in the nearest-neighbor approximation. The repulsive parameters and the volume derivatives of the frequencies are interdependent, and a correct estimate of them is made by using a process of iteration. The volume derivatives of the frequency spectra are obtained by solving the secular equations of the shell model at different volumes. κT's for all these solids are given in the temperature range 0-1000°K. The results show good agreement with experimental observations throughout the region. It is found, in agreement with experiments, that κT remains finite even at temperatures near the melting point, which is contrary to the findings of early workers. © 1976 The American Physical Society.PublicationArticle Effect of catecholamines on melanophores of Rana tigrina(1976) S.K.
