    Acoustic wave interaction with plasma
    (1978) M. Sakuntala; V.K. Jain
Experiments have been conducted to find the variation of the velocity of an acoustic wave propagating through air plasma. It is found that the velocity of sound increases with increasing charged particle density in the plasma. Also it has been observed that as the frequency of the acoustic wave through the plasma increases, the perturbed variation in charged particle density and the electron-neutral atom elastic collision frequency remain constant as long as the frequency of the sound wave is less than the ionisation frequency of the plasma. For further increase in the wave frequency, equal to, or greater than, the ionisation frequency of the plasma, the change in the number density reduces to a minimum value while the elastic collision frequency of the plasma increases.

Hypothalamo hypophysial vascularization of the teleost, Puntius sophore (Ham.) with special reference to its tetrapodan features
    (1978) A.G. Sathyanesan; R.C. Das
In Puntius sophore a hypothalamo-hypophysial portal system structurally comparable to the tetrapods is present. Apart from this the teleostean type of neuroadeno-interface vasculature is also evident. The hypothalamic artery gives rise to the primary capillary plexus of the infundibular floor. The portal vessels formed from them largely irrigate the adenohypophysis through their secondary vascular network. The dense neurosecretory axonal ramifications present in the infundibular floor are in close morphological contact with the primary plexus. This region also exhibits intense monoamine oxidase activity.

Age-dependent response of lactate dehydrogenase of pituitary of rat to testosterone
    (Birkhäuser-Verlag, 1978) K.V. Giri; S.N. Singh
The effects of time and various doses of testosterone on the responsiveness of lactate dehydrogenase of pituitary of 7-, 38- and 78-week-old rats were studied. The activity of the enzyme increases in 78-week-old rats. Castration decreases the enzyme activity at all ages. Maximum increase in the enzyme activity is seen with 50 and 100 μg of testosterone 4 h after administration of hormone to castrated rats. No further time and dose-dependent effect is observed. The magnitude of increase for the enzyme is higher at the age of 38 weeks and decreases in 78-week-old rats. © 1978 Birkhäuser Verlag.

Effect of 7-azatryptophan on heterocyst differentiation in Anabaena doliolum Bharadwaja
    (1978) Manju Agrawal; H.D. Kumar
The effect of DL-7-azatryptophan, an analogue of tryptophan, has been studied on the heterocyst spacing pattern and the probability of proheterocyst regression in Anabaena doliolum. 7-azatryptophan suppressed growth and induced heterocyst differentiation in nitrogen-free medium. In ammonium (1 mM), nitrite (2 mM) and nitrate (2 mM) supplemented media, it caused proheterocyst regression with a frequency of 100%, 35% and 10% respectively. The role of azatryptophan in nitrogen metabolism has been discussed in relation to ammonia-uptake study. © 1978 Indian Academy of Sciences.

Atlanto-axial dislocation associated with suboccipital cold abscess
    (1978) S. Mohanty; S.V. Sharma; T.P. Shrivastav
A case of atlanto-axial dislocation with quadriparesis, diagnosed preoperatively as cranio-vertebral anomaly, was found to have a tubercular cold abscess in the suboccipital region. Literature on cranio-vertebral tuberculosis reveals such presentation to be unusual.

Specific adsorption of acetate ions at the mercury-lithium acetate (AQ) interface
    (1978) M.V. Ramanamurti; B.V. Apparao
Specific adsorption of acetate ions at the mercury-lithium acetate (aq) interface has been investigated using both differential capacity and electrocapillary measurements. Variation of charge due to surface excess of lithium ions (q+) and of charge due to specifically adsorbed acetate ions (q-1 with electrode charge (qM) have been discussed. Such discussion inferred superequivalent adsorption of acetate ions at all positive charges for concentrations of lithium acetate ≥0.20 M whereas Esin-Markov plots predicted the absence of specific adsorption; the prediction of Esin-Markov plots has been shown to be faulty under certain conditions. The plots of φM-2vs q-1 at constant qM for acetate ion resembled the corresponding plots for F- and BF-4 ions; the slope of these plots is negative up to coverages corresponding to 0.20 M lithium acetate. The identification of the isotherm parameter, (∂φM-2/∂q-1)q with the reciprocal of inner layer capacity at constant charge (-1Ci) has been questioned. © 1978.

Biological effects of rice-field herbicide machete on various strains of the nitrogen-fixing blue-green alga Nostoc muscorum
    (1978) H.N. Singh; A. Vaishampayan
The pre-emergence rice-field herbicide machete (2-chloro-2′, 6′-diethyl-N (butoxymethyl) acetanilide), is apparently toxic and lytic to parental, het+ nif11-, and Em-R het- nif2- strains of Nostoc muscorum. The intensity of the biological effects induced by the herbicide increases with the growth-promoting efficiency of various inorganic nitrogen sources. The herbicide has no effect on heterocyst differentiation, and induced biological perturbations are not reversed by glucose. Machete appears to be strong mutagen as 5-6% of the het+ nif11- and Em-R het- are prototrophic revertants. © 1978.

Comparative studies on myosin ATPase of a flying and a nonflying bird
    (1978) S.K. Srivastava; S.K. Sarangi; P.P. Mathur; M.S. Kanungo
Myosin was purified from the flight muscles of a flying (pigeon) and a nonflying (fowl) bird. Ki (ADP) of myosin ATPase of pigeon is higher, but the Km (ATP) is lower than that of fowl. The specific activity (μmole of Pi liberated/min/mg protein) is higher for the fowl. A0.5 (CaCl2) of myosin of both pigeon and fowl is similar. However, the two proteins differ in their interactions with ADP, ATP and p-chloromercuribenzoate. The two proteins have the same tyrosine, tryptophan and sulfhydryl contents. The electrophoretic patterns of the two myosins on SDS-polyacrylamide gels are different. These studies show significant molecular differences in the myosin derived from the flight muscles of a flying (pigeon) and a nonflying (fowl) bird. © 1978 Masson, Paris.
