Effect of selective monoamine oxidase A and B inhibitors on footshock induced aggression in paired rats.
    (1990) K.P. Datla; S.K. Bhattacharya
Effects of a selective monoamine oxidase (MAO)--A inhibitor, clorgyline, a selective MAO-B inhibitor, deprenyl, and a non-selective MAO inhibitor, nialamide, were investigated on footshock-induced aggression (FIA) in paired rats. The doses and pretreatment times of the inhibitors used were based on an earlier reported in vivo dose-response and time-course study. In addition, apomorphine, a dopaminergic receptor agonist, and beta-phenylethylamine, a preferred substrate for MAO-B, were also used to garner corroborative evidence. The results of the study indicate that selective MAO-A inhibitors are likely to attenuate FIA by augmenting central serotonergic activity, while selective MAO-B inhibitors accentuate the behaviour by facilitating dopaminergic activity. A permissive role for noradrenaline could not be delineated by the available data.

    Reward-induced arousal differences in retention
    (1990) C.B. Dwivedi
The reward-induced shifts in motivational orientations were investigated and retention in a 2 (high and low levels of intrinsic motivation) × 2 (reward and no-reward presentations) factorial experiment conducted on 60 extreme scorers on a test of intrinsic motivation (Haywood, 1968, American Journal of Mental Deficiency, 72, 662-667). A Hindu version of the 'war of ghosts' story (Bartlett, 1932, Remembering: A study in experimental and social psychology, Cambridge: University Press) was used as to-be-remembered material. High intrinsically oriented non-rewarded and low intrinsically oriented rewarded Ss showed higher short-term and long-term retentions. An optimum level of arousal due to reward manipulations in the two extreme scorer groups enhanced retentions, whereas an excessive level of arousal in the rewarded high intrinsically oriented group and a very low level of arousal in the non-rewarded low intrinsically oriented group extend an inverted U-shaped curve of arousal in the present experiment. © 1990.

Phase equilibria and crystal chemical relations in copper-nickel-selenium system
    (1990) M. Singh; S. Bhan
Phase equilibria in the copper-nickel-selenium system has been investigated using x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Ternary isotherms at 703 and 573 K show interesting differences. In the Cu-Se system, Cu3Se2, CuSe, and CuSe2 phases decompose at higher temperatures. Only two phases viz., Cu2-xSe and Cu2Se are stable at 703 K. Solid solubility of nickel in these stable phases is ≈2 at %. Tetragonal Ni3Se2 phase has a solid solubility of about 8 at % copper in the ternary system. At 573 K, NiSe phase dissolves ≈5 at % copper. Rapid quenching of alloys on the Cu2Se-Ni3Se2 quasi-binary section resulted no change in crystal structure. Phase relations and crystal chemistry of the system has been discussed in detail. © 1990.

Rule based classification model for epileptic discharges
(Publ by IEEE, 1990) R.B. Mishra
The development of an interactive expert system model for the classification of epilepsies is described. The basic structure of the model extracts some concepts from the framework of EXPERTS, e.g., findings, hypotheses, and decision rules. Using control graphs, the model is implemented in Turboprolog. The system is able to classify different types of epilepsies, such as petitmal, psychomotor, and grandmal, with a confidence factor of -1 to +1 associated with a particular class of epilepsy.

Thermal stability of a layer with permeable boundaries and variable gravitational field
(Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1990) A.K. Singh; Mohammad Yusuf
The aim of this paper is to investigate the thermal stability of a fluid layer with permeable boundaries and a variable gravitational field. It is observed that the principle of exchange of stabilities is valid when the layer is heated form below and the complex growth rate of an arbitrary oscillatory mode exists outside of a circle whose radius depends upon the permeability parameter, Prandtl number and wavelength of the mode. In the case of a layer heated from below, gravity increasing upward has a destabilizing effect whereas the permeability parameter has a stabilizing effect. © 1990 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

Thermal analysis of a cathode: temperature distribution and warm-up time
    (1990) Anjan Sil; N.K. Samria; D.S. Venkateswarlu
This paper gives a theoretical estimate of the cathode temperature distribution at the surface and the warm-up time. Several cases of practical interest have been studied from the thermodynamic considerations using the software specially developed for this application. The software is in two parts, viz., the steady-state analysis which gives the cathode surface temperatures and the transient analysis which yields the warm-up time. Temperature-dependent thermal conductivity, specific heat, density, and emissivity have been used in the transient analysis which improves the accuracy. Scaling laws for the determination of cathode surface temperature have been devised to cater for various sizes of cathodes used in industry. Not reported so far, our results show that a pancake-heater configuration has a better thermal response but a non-uniform cathode surface temperature profile whereas the conventional helical-heater configuration has a relatively poor thermal response but a more uniform temperature profile on the cathode. This aspect gets amplified and is very revealing at larger cathode dimensions. © 1990.

Linkage disequilibrium in laboratory strains of Drosophila ananassue is due to drift
    (1990) B.N. SINGH; A.K. SINGH
Two inversions in the opposite arms of the third chromosome are common in natural populations of Drosophila ananassae. When the strains are taken to laboratory, these inversions have been found to persist for several generations. Four natural populations were sampled and the data on the combinations between 3L and 3R karyotypes were obtained. For all the four populations, laboratory stocks (mass culture and isofemale lines) were established and maintained in food bottles by transferring fifty flies in each generation. After ten generations, chromosomes of all stocks were sampled. The results show that the two linked inversions are associated randomly in natural populations and in laboratory stocks established from mass culture. On the other hand, the same two inversions show non‐random association (linkage disequilibrium) in several isofemale lines. The random association between inversions in natural and mass culture laboratory populations as contrasted to laboratory populations established from single females suggest that random drift is the cause of non‐random association in isofemale lines. The tight linkage between the two inversions as evidenced by the results of recombination studies reported earlier, supports the notion that linkage disequilibrium is caused by drift. Voltammetric Studies of Some Oxo-Uranium (VI) Complexes of Dithio Ligands at Thin Film Semiconducting ZnO/Acetonitrile Interface for Photosensitizer Applications
    (1990) Lai Bahadur; J.P. Pandey
With a view to explore the suitability of these compounds for their possible use as photosensitizers, the electrochemical behavior of tetramethylammonium uranyl tris-diethyldithiocarbamate, Me4N[UO2(dtc)3], and tetraethylammonium uranyl bis-isomaleonitriledithiolate, (Et4N)2[UO2(i-MNT)2], has been studied at thin film semiconducting ZnO and platinum (for comparison) electrodes in acetonitrile medium containing 0.1M NaClO4 (anhydrous) as supporting electrolyte. Studies have been made through cyclic voltammetric technique. Both complexes exhibit a cathodic peak and associated anodic peak, though their formal redox potentials (E°) were found to be different. Analysis of the parameters derived from voltammograms indicates that the reduction and reoxidation of these complexes, most probably metal, are diffusion-controlled, quasireversible processes coupled with chemical reactions. © 1990, The Electrochemical Society, Inc. Sequential chemotherapy and radiotherapy in the treatment of head and neck cancers
    (1990) S. Pradhan; A.K. Asthana; R.K. Jain; G.C. Pant; D.C.S. Reddy
The grim statistics of head and neck cancers calls for chemotherapy in addition to radiotherapy. Fortyfour patients with advanced cancers were treated with 4-6 injections of Methotrexate 50 mg iv weekly followed by radiotherapy (RT). Fortytwo control patients received only RT. With chemotherapy (CT) 13.64% complete (CR) and 43.18% partial response (PR) was obtained. Thirtyseven study patients and 38 control patients were assessable one month after treatment completion. 56.76% study and 42.11% control patients showed a final CR. Patients with stage III disease and oropharyngeal primary showed better response with little difference in response of laryngeal cancers between the two groups. Better response was seen in patients with good performance status. Initial responsiveness to CT was predictive of attainment of a final CR. Anterior chemotherapy did not accentuate subsequent radiation reactions. © 1990 Association of Otolaryngologists of India.

Evidence for two-particle configurations in deformed nuclei from beta transition rates
    (1990) P.C. Sood; R.K. Sheline
All the known allowed beta-decays with log ft values up to 5.2 in the deformed nuclei are found to proceed through the underlying single-particle spin-flip transition p: [Nn3Λuparrow;;] rightleftharrpoons; n: [Mn3Λdownarrow;;] with N = n3 + Δ = 5. This observation provides a "strong" rule for configuration assignments to the involved levels in the parent and the daughter nuclei. We use this rule to deduce two-quasiparticle configurations for 42 levels, including several high spin isomers, in the doubly-odd, and 32 connected levels in the even-even, nuclei of the rare earth region. The experimentally observed level energies are compared with the theoretically expected band head energies for the assigned two-particle configurations. © 1990 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Soret effects on free-convection and mass transfer flow in the stokes problem for a infinite vertical plate
(Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1990) Jha Basant Kumar; A.K. Singh
An analytical study is performed to examine the free-convection and mass transfer flow for the Sokes problem for an infinite vertical plate on taking into account the Soret effect (thermal diffusion effect). The Laplace transform technique is used to obtain the expressions for velocity and skin-friction. The effect of Soret number S on velocity field and skin-friction is extensively discussed with the help of graphs and table. © 1990 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

Effect of cisplatin and other biological response modifiers on the activity of lysozyme, plasminogen activator and 5' nucleotidase by murine macrophages in vitro
    (1990) B. Geetha; A. Sodhi
In vitro effect of cisplatin and other biological response modifiers has been studied. It is observed that in vitro treatment of macrophage monolayers with cisplatin, rIFN Y, LPS or MDP either alone or in combination showed significantly increased activity of lysozyme, plasminogen activator and decreased activity of 5' nucleotidase. Priming of macrophage with rIFN Y had a significant effect in enhancing the activity of lysozyme and plasminogen activator when subsequently treated with cisplatin, MDP or LPS.

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of orbit--a case report.
    (1990) O.P. Maurya; R. Patel; V. Thakur; R. Singh; M. Kumar
Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of orbit presenting as a case of rapid proptosis of the right eye is reported in a 4 year old male child. There was no evidence of recurrence during a follow up of 6 months. Rhabdomyosarcoma is one of the most common primary malignant orbital neoplasms of child hood. It usually produces a precipitously progressing unilateral proptosis of sudden onset. It is a highly malignant neoplasm of pleuripotential embryonic mesoderm, which commonly differentiates to form cells similar to rhabdomyoblasts of the foetus. Because of the presence of elongated cells that contain abundance of eosinophilic glycogen rich cytoplasm, it is generally referred to as embryonal form of rhabdomyosarcoma.

Synthesis and structural characterisation of some latter lanthanide complexes of 2-acetylpyridineisonicotinoyl hydrazone
    (1990) T.R. Rao; Genda Singh
2-Acetylpyridineisonicotinoy1hydrazone (2-ApINH) upon reaction with 4f metal ions, gave complexes of the formulae [M(2-ApINH)2CICl and [M(2-ApINH)20H] [M =Y(III), Gd(lII). Tb(III) and Dy(III)]. The structures of the complexes have been studied by elemental analysis, molar conductance, magnetic susceptibility, electronic, IR, 1H and 13C NMR spectral techniques. The bonding parameters, viz., β, b1/2, 6(%) and have been calculated from the absorption spectra of the Dy(III) complexes. IR and NMR spectral data suggest non-deprotonated tridentate 2-ApINH in the eight-coordinated addition complexes and uninegative tridentate 2-ApINH in the seven-coordinated, neutral complexes. © 1990, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
