Influence of southern oscillation index on the variability and predictability of Indian monsoon. A reappraisal
    (Birkhäuser-Verlag, 1993) J. Chattopadhyay; R. Bhatla
The relationship between the monsoon rainfall throughout all India, northwest India and peninsular India as well as the onset dates of the monsoon and two indices of southern oscillation (SOI), namely Isla de Pascua minus Darwin (I-D) and Tahiti minus Darwin (T-D) pressure anomaly have been studied for different periods. The study indicates that the monsoon rainfall shows a strong and significant direct relationship with SOI for the concurrent, succeeding autumn and succeeding winter seasons. The magnitude of the direct correlation coefficient for the SOI using (I-D) is enhanced over all India and peninsular India if the above seasons happen to be associated with an easterly phase of the QBO (Quasi-Biennial Oscillation) at 50 mb. The result indicates that the strength of the monsoon plays an important role in the following southern oscillation events in the Pacific Ocean. The premonsoon tendency of the SOI anomaly spring minus winter SOI shows a significant positive correlation with monsoon rainfall over all India, northwest India and peninsular India. The absolute value of the positive correlation coefficient becomes highly enhanced over all India, northwest India as well as peninsular India if the 6-month period from December to March is associated with the westerly phase of the QBO. Hence, the premonsoon SOI tendency parameter can be a useful predictor of Indian monsoon rainfall especially if it happens to be associated with the westerly QBO. Significant negative association is also found between the anomaly of monsoon onset dates and SOI of the previous spring season, the absolute value being higher for SOI (T-D) than for SOI (I-D). The negative correlation coefficient becomes enhanced if the previous springs are associated with a westerly phase of the QBO. It shows that the previous spring SOI has some predictive value for the onset date of Indian monsoon, a positive SOI followed by an early onset of monsoon, and vice versa, especially if it is associated with a westerly phase of the QBO. © 1993 Birkhäuser Verlag.

Role of materials released from Escherichia coli cells in the catabolite repression of L- arabinose isomerase induced by γ-irradiation
    (1993) Aseema Chatterjee; A.K. Bhattacharya
Inhibition of L-arabinose isomerase synthesizing capacity of Escherichia coli by γ-irradiation was withdrawn when the irradiated cells were separated by centrifugation from the suspending medium and were suspended in a fresh growth medium. Further, there was an inhibition of the induced enzyme synthesis in unirradiated cells when suspended in the supernatant from γ-irradiated cell suspension. These findings suggested that some inhibitory materials) was released from γ-irradiated cells into the suspending medium. Incubation of γ-irradiated cells suspended in fresh growth medium led to an exponential decrease in the enzyme synthesizing capacity, which was not caufyed by release of any inhibitory material Cyclic AMP could reverse the inhibition of the enzyme synthesizing capacity in unirradiuted cells caused by their suspension in the supernatant from γ-irradiated cell suspension immediately following irradiation suggesting that catftbolite repression is the cause of the inhibition. Incubation of γ-irradiated cell suspension released the L arabinose isomerave-syntriesizing system from the catabolite repression.

Negative resistance in ZrSe2 single crystals
    (1993) K.S. Bartwal; O.N. Srivastava
Voltage-controlled negative resistance (VCNR) has been observed in the semiconducting layered compound ZrSe2 at a field of ∼ 50-100 V cm-1, at room temperature. The occurence of VCNR is attributed to the intervalley transfer of electrons in the conduction band. © 1993.

Judgment of facial expression of emotion in unilateral brain-damaged patients
(1993) Manas K. Mandal; Hari S. Asthana; Shiv C. Tandon
Patients with unilateral brain damage and normal controls were asked to give (1) inter-emotion judgment within the photographs of six facial emotions in terms of mutual similarities, and (2) intra-emotion judgment within the hemifacial composite photographs of an emotion in terms of intensity of expression. Right brain-damaged patients could differentiate between the emotion of happiness and all other emotions. Left brain-damaged patients differentiated between aroused-nonaroused emotions. Normal controls differentiated between positive-negative as well as aroused-nonaroused emotions. Left-left facial composites were judged to have expressed more intensely than right-right facial composites or normal/mirror-reversed facial orientations of emotions (except fear) by any group (p > .05). © 1993.

Facile technique of protein precipitation by application of electric current
(Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1993) Anita Sharma; R.P. Sinha; Minni Srivastava; Ashok Kumar
Precipitation of proteins has been achieved following passage of direct electric current in various protein solutions. Application of as low as 3 V of electric current showed precipitation but the rate increased with increase in electric current. With 9 V there was more than 85% precipitation of protein within 15 min. Precipitation occurred at a wide range of pH and temperature. Electrophoretic analysis of precipitated proteins show that they are not denatured by application of electric current. Proteins thus precipitated can be easily recovered by centrifugation. © 1993 Science & Technology Letters.

Simple approach to acute respiratory infection in rural underfive children
    (1993) D.K. Agarwal; B.D. Bhatia; K.N. Agarwal
The feasibility of acute respiratory infection (ARI) control in 5,535 rural preschool children was studied. The Primary Health Centre (PHC) staff and local practitioners (drug distribution centres) were identified and trained in recognition of moderate/severe ARI, referral, drug administration and in the education of the community. Functional ARI classification as envisaged in ARI control programme was followed. There was significant reduction in moderate (42% reduction) and severe (89% reduction) ARI episodes from year 1985 to 1987. Both ARI (27.8%) and non-ARI (18.3%) deaths showed reduction. Majority of children who died due to ARI were also unimmunized. The moderate and severe ARI related morbidity and mortality was significantly reduced in immunized children compared to unimmunized children. Although, strategies of National ARI control programme by health education, standard case management and strengthening of immunization is a good thought but it is clear that proper implementation of immunizations is going to pay more dividends. It is also evident that the local medical practitioners should be trained and involved in this control programme to have community faith as well as to avoid opposition.

Histopathological changes in the epidermis of the air breathing catfish Heteropneustes fossilis exposed to sublethal concentration of mercuric chloride.
    (1993) M.T. Rajan; T.K. Banerjee
Histopathological alterations induced by the sublethal concentration of (0.03 ppm) mercuric chloride solution on the epidermis of the fresh-water catfish Heteropneustes fossilis have been studied. It induces slow but significant histopathological changes in the various cellular components of the epidermis. It induces vacuolization, necrosis and pycnosis of the nuclei of the epithelial cells which subsequently shed. Loosening of epithelial cells of the outermost and middle layers following degeneration of the intercellular material and widened intercellular spaces is another important alteration. Prolonged mercury treatment also causes a gradual decrease in staining intensity for sulphated glycosaminoglycans in the outer border of the most superficial layer epithelial cells. The glandular elements (club cells and mucocytes) also get affected, showing cyclic degeneration followed by regeneration.

Changes in vegetation and soil during succession following landslide disturbance in the central Himalaya
    (1993) V.S. Reddy; J.S. Singh
Recovery of soil properties, species sequence and changes in plant biomass following landslide damage were studied on 19 sites adjacent to oak (oak zone) and pine (pine zone) forests in the central Himalaya. Fine soil content, organic C and soil nutrients (N, P, Ca and K) increased with age in a non-linear manner. The changes in the soil properties were more rapid in early stages than in later stages. Annuals dominated the sites in early stages of succession. The herb species content and cover increased with age and were positively related with fine soil content and total soil nitrogen. In the oak zone sites, seedlings of pioneer tree species appeared from 6 years, while seedlings of climax oak species appeared after 15 years. On the other hand, seedlings of Pinus roxburghii appeared soon after disturbance in the pine zone, and the species persisted throughout the developmental stages. The process of succession corresponded to the tolerance model and the resource ratio hypothesis in the oak zone and to an inhibition model in the pine zone. Nomenclature follows Osmaston and Naithani). © 1993 Academic Press, Inc.

Influence of Abana on Experimental Atherogenesis in Hypercholesterolemic Rabbits
(1993) Ashok Kumar Tiwari; Jagdish D. Gode; Govind Prasad Dubey
An experimental, placebo-controlled study with rabbits was conducted to determine the role of Abana, an Ayurvedic preparation, on atherosclerosis. The results showed that Abana arrested the rise in TC, LDLc and VLDLc when administered along with an atherogenic diet for 60 days. In another phase of the study, when Abana was given from days 60-120 to rabbits who were made hyperlipidemic by feeding them an atherogenic diet for 60 days, Abana brought the TC, LDLc and VLDLc levels back to normal. On the other hand, the levels of the cardioprotective HDLc were elevated by Abana administration in both phases of the study. Histological pictures showed pronounced reduction in the atherosclerotic involvement of the coronary artery following treatment with Abana. The architecture of the coronary artery returned almost to normal. These findings substantiate the possible role of Abana in the reduction, prevention and reversal of atherosclerosis. synthesis, characterization, xrd, magnetic moments, electronic and ir spectra of chromium(III) malondihy dr azide azide/ sulphate complexes
    (1993) K.K. Narang; K.B. Singh; M.K. Singh
Chromium(III) malondihydrazide azide/sulphate complexes of the type Cr(MDH) x(N3)ySO4)3_y.6H20, where x = y = 1–3 and MDH = malondihydrazide, CH2(C0NHNH2)2, have been synthesised and characterized by elemental analyses. All the complexes are insoluble in water and pol ar/non-polar common organic solvents. Electronic spectral and magnetic moment data indicate octahedral stereochemistry around chromium(III) in all complexes. MDH bonding occurs only through the two imino NH groups as indicated by the IR spectra. The azide and sulphate groups are ionically associated. The absence of sharp lines in the XRD patterns of two complexes indicate their micro crystalline character. © 1993, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. All rights reserved.

Study of infant and childhood mortality in an ICDS block of eastern U.P.
    (1993) S.P. Singh; D.C. Reddy; S.C. Mohapatra; S.D. Gaur
Information on births and deaths was collected in 11 randomly selected AWW areas of Barhaj Mahen ICDS project area in Eastern U.P. by an independent survey team in 1988-89. The findings revealed that the births and deaths were under-reported to the tune of 36.6 and 13.9 percent respectively, by AWWs. The different demographic indicators generated from the data were as follows, CBR and CDR were 30.3 and 7.1 per 1000 population. Neonatal mortality rate, IMR, and MMR were 58.3, 74.7 and 6.5 per 1000 live births. 0-6 yr mortality was 16.3 per 1000 children and constituted 37.5% of the total deaths. ARI, diarrhoea and fever were the major causes of mortality in 0-6 yr old children accounting for 25.9, 22.3 and 14.8% respectively. The findings indicated that there was underreporting in adult mortalities despite the independent investigation, and a reduction in infant and childhood mortality possibly due to the beneficial effect of ICDS services.; This analysis aims to determine the extent of underreporting of births and deaths by anganwadi workers (AWW) in Barhaj Mahen project area in Eastern Uttar Pradesh state, India, in 1988, and to identify the birth rate and childhood mortality rate. Causes of mortality are identified. The project area is known to have a high infant mortality rate. Data were obtained from 11 AWW areas serving a population of 10,206. Sampling followed the random cluster technique. Initial household data collection missed 309 births (36.6%) but only 10/72 deaths (13.9%). 35.5% of male and 37.8% of female births were unreported. 14.6% of male and 12.9% of female deaths were unreported. 18 neonatal and 5 postneonatal infants died. Early neonatal mortality was 45.3/1000 live births, and neonatal mortality was 58.3. Infant mortality was 74.7, and maternal mortality was 6.5/1000 live births. Respiratory infections accounted for the highest mortality (25.9%). Other cause of death were diarrhea (22.3%), fever (14.8%), prematurity (8.1%), tetanus (7.4%), and accident (3.7%). The total death rate (7.2/1000) was lower than the national average. The birth rate in project areas of Uttar Pradesh was almost the same as the national average. Postneonatal mortality showed the lowest rates compared to Uttar Pradesh and the nation. Since this study area had been included in the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) since 1981, it is likely that the lower child mortality reflects the emphasis on ICDS services. Underreporting of deaths is considered to be marginal.

Sequential oscillations in bromine hydrolysis controlled oscillators in a closed reactor
(1993) R.P. Rastogi; G.P. Misra; Ishwar Das; Archana Sharma
Detailed results on birth, growth including sequential oscillations and decay for ascorbic acid-cyclohexanone-Ce4+-BrO3--H 2SO4 system in a batch reactor are reported. Oscillations are observed within a certain range of temperature and the system is monostable beyond the upper and lower limits of temperature. Results have been interpreted in terms of Field, Körös and Noyes mechanism and bromine hydrolysis controlled model which has been modified for reactions in the closed reactor keeping in view the consecutive reactions associated with ascorbic acid. Numerical simulations indicate the existence of two types of oscillations as experimentally observed when the sequence ascorbic acid → oxalic acid → products is taken into account. There is an indication of time pause which becomes more evident when the sequence ascorbic acid → intermediate (threonic acid) → oxalic acid is taken into consideration. However, quantitative agreement is poor. © 1993 American Chemical Society.

Sea levels along Visakhapatnam coast: a geomorphic explanation
    (1993) K.N.P. Raju; A.R. Khan; Y. Ramesh
About 120 km, of shoreline in north coastal Andhra Pradesh on either side of Visakhapatnam is rocky with a number of headlands and bays. Surfaces and caves in rocks along this shoreline were mapped, to explain their relation to sea level stands of Holocene. The seaward margins of hills mapped at many sites along the southern part of the shoreline show a distinct orientation of the outline and dominance of a class of surfaces different from those along the northern stretch. This variability is attributed to the concentration and release of energy of longshore drift and to the variable orientation of the shoreline. Surfaces between elevations of 5 and 1 metre above msl dominate the shoreline. The geomorphic characteristics of these surfaces conform well with those of the storm wave platforms. Sea caves are very few and are associated with either horizontal and/or inclined joints or foliation planes. The "inactive' cliffs with their toes at about 2 metres above msl along with rocky floors/surfaces with sand cover, point to a sea level stand of 1.00-1.50 metres above the (present) mean low tide level (mltl). -from Authors

Implication of uterine configuration on dosimetry to point a using the Amersham afterloading system
    (1993) Ramesh Vedula
Ninety-four biopsy-proven cases of cervix carcinoma who underwent brachytherapy with the flexible Amersham afterloading system are examined in this study. The uterine configuration showed a wide range with respect to the length, angle of version (indicated by angle alpha) and the degree of right or left shift of the midline at the internal os (indicated by angle beta). The manufacturers of the afterloading system have given certain precalculated dose rates to A which they derived from computer calculations for the various configurations of the system, for a particular loading strength of the Caesium 137 source trains, and for a particular range of angle alpha and beta. The study involves mathematical calculations of point A dose rates using post application radiographs, and a mean value of point A dose rate is derived to compare with other variables. A distortion of the uterus in the form of flexion (as opposed to version), resulting in bending of the uterine tandem is noted in 3 cases. There are 22% of cases with gross degree of retroversion (angle alpha more than 180°) for which the precalculated tables are lacking. The angle beta, however, is in the normal range for all the cases but one. Nineteen cases (20.2%) showed point A dose rates which are beyond the specified dose rates of the manufacturers. Analysis of these 19 cases showed 6 cases with angle alpha more than 180°, eight cases with more than a 10° shift of the uterus to right or left of midline (angle beta) and the rest five cases have fairly normal values of these angles. Analysis of these five cases showed that three of them showed more than 8 CGy/hr difference in dose rates to individual points A right and left. An undue curvature of the uterine tandem to one side in the distal half, with a straight proximal half (near the anterior flange) is noted in these three cases. The angle alpha and beta are normal here since the nearest 2 cm of uterine tandem to the anterior flange is straight, but the distal end lying in a closer position to one side, contributed more dose to point A of that side. This factor of flexion might have resulted both in contributing to a difference in dose rates to points A (Right and Left), as well as undue difference in mean point A dose rates beyond the specified accuracy limits of the manufacturers. The flexion deformity might have been caused by uterine distortion which is a result of post external radiotherapy fibrosis of the uterus, post partum fibrosis, and post infection fibrosis. The cause of dosimetric differences in the last 2 out of 94 cases could not be explained at present. The importance of dosimetric factors and their implications are discussed, and a highly individualistic attitude in brachytherapy is highlighted. © 1993.
