PublicationArticle Preferential effect of mitomycin C on constitutive heterochromatin of the Indian muntjac, Muntiacus muntjak(1980) Pramila Gupta; T. Sharma[No abstract available]PublicationArticle Pituitary cytology of the freshwater teleost Anabas testudineus (Bloch)(1980) T.M. Jose; A.G. SathyanesanIn the pituitary of A. testudineus the rostral pars distalis (RPD), proximal pars distalis (PPD) and pars intermedia (PI) are arranged in a rostro-caudal axis. The rostral neurohypophysis (NH) extends dorsal to the pars distalis, while the caudal part vertically penetrates into the PI and ramifies in its component. The RPD mainly consists of erythrosinophils and PbH-positive cells which are comparable to the lactotropes and corticotropes mentioned in the literature. In the nonbreeding season, acidophils are the predominant cells of the PPD and are largely confined to its dorsal aspect. The two types of cyanophils present in the PPD could not be differentiated with the various techniques used in this study. However, those cyanophils which increase in number and are active during the spawning season may be the gonadotropes, while those which are cytologically inactive may be the thyrotropes. The pars intermedia consists of PAS+ and PbH+ cells. Trichrome and tetrachrome staining techniques revealed the presence of acidophils, cyanophils and amphiphils in the PI.PublicationArticle New furofurano lignans from Justicia simplex(1980) Shibnath Ghosal; Shanta Banerjee; Dinesh K. JaiswalA new 3,7-dioxabicyclo[3,3,O]octane lignan, named justisolin, and a new lignan O-glucoside, named simplexoside, were isolated from the whole plant of Justicia simplex D. Don. (Acanthaceae), collected at fruiting. The structure of the free lignan was established as 2e-(3,4-methylenedioxy-6-hydroxy)-phenyl-6e- Piperonyl-3,7-dioxabicyclo[3,3,0]octane (1) and that of the glucoside as 2e-(3-methoxy-4-O-β-d- glucopyranosyl)-phenyl-6e-piperonyl-3,7-dioxabicyclo[3,3,0]octane (2) on the basis of chemical transformation and spectral evidence. The biological functions of these and related lignans are appraised. © 1980.PublicationArticle Neuromuscular status in hypothyroidism(1980) S.N. Rao; B.C. Katiyar; K.R.P. Nair; S. MisraTwenty unselected patients with hypothyroidism were evaluated by clinical and electrophysiological techniques for neuromuscular dysfunction. On clinical examination, muscle weakness was observed in four, paraesthesia in 11, carpal tunnel syndrome in three, and peripheral neuropathy in two of the patients. The electromyograms were abnormal in 14 of the patients. The average duration of motor unit potentials and the mean amplitudes in these patients were reduced, compatible with myopathy. There were no denervation potentials. The nerve conduction abnormalities were found in 13 patients, predominantly affecting the median (10) than the peroneal nerve (one). Subclinical carpal tunnel syndrome was observed in six patients. This was evidenced by increased sensory in five and motor distal latencies in one patient. Copyright © 1980, Wiley Blackwell. Prasad[No abstract available]PublicationArticle Sleep cycle studies in babies of undernourished mothers(1980) V.P. Bhatia; G.P. Katiyar; K.N. Agarwal; T.K. Das; P.K. DeyPolygraphic sleep cycle studies - comprising simultaneous recording of electroencephalogram, electrocardiogram, electro-oculogram, phasic body activity and respiration - were performed on 19 term newborn babies born to severely undernourished mothers, and results compared with 19 healthy newborn babies. The sleep cycle in babies of under-nourished mothers showed disorganisation during active rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and quite nonrapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. The sleep disorganisation was more pronounced during quiet NREM sleep when frequent phasic activity and ocular movements were registered, thereby leading to a significant increase in the content of intermediate sleep. Furthermore, the duration of total sleep cycle and its components, active REM and quite NREM sleep, were significantly shortened.PublicationArticle Short-term effect of two pesticides on lipid and cholesterol content of liver, ovary and blood serum during the pre-spawning phase in the freshwater teleost, Heteropneustes fossilis (bloch)(1980) H. Singh; T.P. SinghTotal lipid in liver and ovary, and cholesterol in liver, blood serum and ovary, were estimated in Heteropneustes fossilis during the pre-spawning phase of its reproductive cycle in response to 96-h exposure to Cythion and Hexadrin at a safe concentration (SC) and an initial median lethal concentration LC(I)50 in aquarium water. In short exposures at these concentrations these pesticides failed to affect liver and ovarian lipid. Blood serum and liver cholesterol were also unaffected but ovarian cholesterol showed a significant increase. Increase in ovarian cholesterol has apparently been produced by its reduced utilisation as an effect of pesticides. © 1980.PublicationArticle Effect of indomethacin (a prostaglandin synthetase inhibitor) on the permeability of blood-brain and blood-CSF barriers in rat(1980) P.K. Dey; H.S. Sharma; K.S. Rao[No abstract available]PublicationArticle PublicationArticle Role of corticosterone & L-thyroxine in gonadal development of the common myna Acridotheres tristis(1980) C.M. Chaturvedi; J.P. Thapliyal[No abstract available]
