dc.description.abstractA clinical study of 100 cases of amebic liver abscess with special reference to unusual presentation and difficulty in diagnosis is reviewed. Leucocytosis, decreased hemoglobin and raised ESR was observed in 61%, 77% and 90% of cases. Main alterations in liver function test were: low serum albumin, raised alkaline phosphatase and S.G.P.T. in 60.7%, 41.8% and 30% of cases, respectively. Abnormal radiological findings were observed in 84.5% of cases. Their significance has been discussed. Predominant complication was perforation of liver abscess which was seen in 30% of cases. There were 18 deaths in this series. However, incidence of mortality was much higher (60%) in cases with ruptured liver abscess.
