Title:
Introduction: NanoBioMedicine and its promise in gastrointestinal diseases

Abstract

NanoBioMedicine, an emerging interdisciplinary field, combines nanotechnology with biomedical sciences to revolutionize disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. This chapter delves into the promising role of NanoBioMedicine in managing gastrointestinal (GI) diseases, presenting a comprehensive overview of relevant nanotechnological fundamentals. It explores advanced drug delivery systems, such as polymeric nanoparticles, liposomes, dendrimers, and mesoporous silica nanoparticles, highlighting their synthesis methods, including nanoprecipitation, emulsion techniques, template methods, and bottom-up assembly. Nanotechnology offers significant advantages in GI disease management by enhancing drug solubility, stability, and targeted delivery, thereby improving therapeutic outcomes. However, the complex environment of the GI tract presents formidable challenges, such as enzymatic degradation and mucosal barriers, which necessitate innovative nanotechnological solutions. This chapter discusses the benefits and challenges of employing nanotechnology in gastroenterology, providing specific examples of successful applications and emphasizing the critical need to overcome physiological barriers. By addressing these challenges, NanoBioMedicine holds the potential to transform GI therapeutics, offering hope for more effective and personalized treatments. © 2026 Elsevier Inc.
