KumarIn this paper, a metal-clad planar optical waveguide biosensor with five layer structure is studied theoretically for the detection of Pseudomonas and Pseudomonas-like bacteria. Using a very simple boundary matching technique, we derive the mode equation and other necessary formulae for the proposed biosensor and analyse its performance under different conditions related to its constituents. The numerical results presented in this paper leads to a significant optimization of the important design parameters to sense micro-scale biological objects. Also, we compare our computed results with the results given for a biosensor with four layer structure. In addition, we discuss the importance and need of the inclusion of the thickness of an affinity layer as fifth layer in the four layer structure of the metal clad planar waveguide.PublicationConference Paper The CBM Collaboration(Elsevier, 2009) N. ZolinWe present inclusive charged hadron elliptic flow (v2) measured over the pseudorapidity range |η|<0.35 in Au+Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV. Results for v2 are presented over a broad range of transverse momentum (pT=0.2-8.0 GeV/c) and centrality (0-60%). To study nonflow effects that are correlations other than collective flow, as well as the fluctuations of v2, we compare two different analysis methods: (1) the event-plane method from two independent subdetectors at forward (|η|=3.1-3.9) and beam (|η|>6.5) pseudorapidities and (2) the two-particle cumulant method extracted using correlations between particles detected at midrapidity. The two event-plane results are consistent within systematic uncertainties over the measured pT and in centrality 0-40%. There is at most a 20% difference in the v2 between the two event-plane methods in peripheral (40-60%) collisions. Banerjee; P. Chandra; D. Shanker; H. Singh; V. SinghMovement and abstraction of groundwater in the geological formations are dependent on the hydro-geological parameters of the aquifers. The purpose of any aquifer test is to determine the hydro-geological parameters. Among the basic parameters are the specific storage, permeability and leakage coefficients. The hydro-geological parameters are hidden in the field test data and their identification is possible using the available physically plausible models suitable for the prevailing field circumstances. In this context, a generalized theoretical solution for the effect of partial penetration superimposed over the full penetration on draw-down in a large-diameter well in artesian aquifer discharging at a constant rate has been presented for non-dimensional quantities describing the variable geometries of wells. The well-function curves are developed by varying the percentage amount of drilling and the percentage amount of casing lowered which then control to vary the percentage amount of open-hole or screened interval for the three categories: when the diameter of the cased interval in which the water level changes is greater than, equal to, and less than the diameter of the open interval. The skin effect and the effect of leakage are neglected. A comparison of results with the published works has also been presented. The present study is useful in such areas where wells are located either in harder or in collapsible loose formations; and a decision is required that, at the planning, construction, or development stage, as to what extent the amount of drilling be reduced, and/or an additional amount of casing be lowered within the aquifer. Zhang; S. Zhou; J. Zimányi; L. ZolinPHENIX has measured the electron-positron pair mass spectrum from 0 to 8 GeV / c2 in p + p collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV. The contributions from light meson decays to e+ e- pairs have been determined based on measurements of hadron production cross sections by PHENIX. Within the systematic uncertainty of ∼20% they account for all e+ e- pairs in the mass region below ∼ 1 GeV / c2. The e+ e- pair yield remaining after subtracting these contributions is dominated by semileptonic decays of charmed hadrons correlated through flavor conservation. Using the spectral shape predicted by PYTHIA, we estimate the charm production cross section to be 544 ± 39 (stat) ± 142 (syst) ± 200 (model) μb, which is consistent with QCD calculations and measurements of single leptons by PHENIX. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. ZhouAn energy threshold of (220±10)eV was achieved at an efficiency of 50% with a four-channel ultralow-energy germanium detector, each with an active mass of 5 g. This provides a unique probe to weakly interacting massive particles (WIMP) dark matter with mass below 10 GeV. With a data acquisition live time of 0.338 kg-day at the Kuo-Sheng Laboratory, constraints on WIMPs in the galactic halo were derived. The limits improve over previous results on both spin-independent WIMP-nucleon and spin-dependent WIMP-neutron cross-sections for WIMP mass between 3 and 6 GeV. Sensitivities for full-scale experiments are projected. ZolinWe present the first measurement of photoproduction of J / ψ and of two-photon production of high-mass e+ e- pairs in electromagnetic (or ultra-peripheral) nucleus-nucleus interactions, using Au + Au data at sqrt(sN N) = 200 GeV. The events are tagged with forward neutrons emitted following Coulomb excitation of one or both Au{star operator} nuclei. The event sample consists of 28 events with me+ e- > 2 GeV / c2 with zero like-sign background. The measured cross sections at midrapidity of d σ / d y (J / ψ + X n, y = 0) = 76 ± 33 (stat) ± 11 (syst) μb and d2 σ / d m d y (e+ e- + X n, y = 0) = 86 ± 23 (stat) ± 16 (syst) μb / (GeV / c2) for me+ e- ∈ [2.0, 2.8] GeV / c2 have been compared and found to be consistent with models for photoproduction of J / ψ and QED based calculations of two-photon production of e+ e- pairs. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. JoyIn the present investigation, catfish (Heteropneustes fossilis) ovarian tissues were incubated in vitro with vasotocin (VT) or isotocin (IT) to demonstrate their effects on estradiol-17β (E2), progesterone (P4), 17α-hydroxy-4-pregnene-3, 20-dione (17-P) and 17α, 20β-hydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17, 20β-DP). Parallel incubations with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) alone or in combination with VT were used for a comparison. In pre-vitellogenic phase (preparatory phase, GSI-0.48 ± 0.03%), both VT and hCG stimulated E2 significantly, VT in a biphasic manner and hCG in a dose-dependent manner. In pre-spawning (post-vitellogenic, GSI-9.05 ± 0.11%) and spawning (post-vitellogenic, GSI-8.01 ± 0.12%) phases, both hormones decreased E2 levels in a dose- and duration-dependent manner; the VT effect being biphasic in the spawning phase. The co-incubation with VT + hCG stimulated E2 in the preparatory phase but inhibited it in the pre-spawning and spawning phases. The incubations with VT or hCG increased P4 levels in a dose- and duration-dependent manner, the magnitude of the effect was higher in the pre-spawning and spawning phases. The co-incubation with VT + hCG stimulated P4 without any additive effect. The P4 derivatives (17-P and 17, 20β-DP) showed similar changes except 17-P in the spawning phase which decreased at 16 h of the incubation. The incubations with IT produced similar but low responses. ZolinThe PHENIX experiment presents results from the RHIC 2006 run with polarized p+p collisions at s=62.4GeV, for inclusive π0 production at midrapidity. Unpolarized cross section results are measured for transverse momenta pT=0.5 to 7GeV/c. Next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations are compared with the data, and while the calculations are consistent with the measurements, next-to-leading logarithmic corrections improve the agreement. Double helicity asymmetries ALL are presented for pT=1 to 4GeV/c and probe the higher range of Bjorken x of the gluon (xg) with better statistical precision than our previous measurements at s=200GeV.
