    5-Substituted 1H-tetrazoles as effective corrosion inhibitors for mild steel in 1 M hydrochloric acid

    The corrosion inhibition efficiency of (E)-3-phenyl-2-(1H-tetrazole-5-yl)acrylonitrile (PTA), (E)-3-(4-nitrophenyl)-2-(1H-tetrazole-5-yl)acrylonitrile (NTA), and (E)-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-(1H-tetrazole-5-yl)acrylonitrile (HTA) on mild steel in 1 M HCl was tested using experimental and theoretical methods. The results show that the inhibition efficiency increases with the increasing concentration, and maximum values were obtained at a 40 mg L−1 concentration. The inhibition efficiency of the studied inhibitors follows the order HTA (98.69%) > NTA (96.60%) > PTA (93.99%). Polarization studies suggest that the tetrazoles behave as cathodic inhibitors. The adsorption of the tetrazoles on the mild steel surface obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. In the present study, the values of the free energy of adsorption ((Formula presented.)) vary from 34.92 to 39.71 kJ mol−1. The adsorption of the tetrazoles on the mild steel surface is supported by SEM, EDX and AFM studies. Quantum chemical calculations provide good support to the experimental results. © 2015 The Authors.

    A case report of Blastocystis infection and Steven Johnson’s syndrome

    Blastocystis species (spp.) is an emerging pathogen. There are several unsolved issues linked to this parasite ranging from its nomenclature, commensal status, standardization of laboratory diagnostic methods, genotypes and treatment. Recently, there has been an increase in reports of Blastocystis spp. from symptomatic cases which provide enough evidence of its pathogenic potential. A range of signs and symptoms, from gastro-intestinal to cutaneous manifestations have been attributed to Blastocystis infection. Few reports have established an association between intestinal infection with Blastocystis spp. and skin manifestations in form of urticaria, palmoplantar pruritus and allergy with complete resolution of cutaneous lesions with eradication of the parasite. In this report, we describe a case of Steven Johnson’s syndrome (SJS) in a 6 years old girl along with infection with Blastocystis spp. marked by diarrhea and abdominal pain. Stool examination revealed the presence of all forms of the parasite with subsequent decrease in parasite burden and diarrhea over a period of time. Interestingly, the clearance of Blastocystis spp. from stool was followed by recovery from skin lesions and other symptoms. In this case, the course of SJS was clearly associated with Blastocystis infection. Though skin manifestation with Blastocystis infection has been previously reported, this is the first report of its association with SJS.     A seven membered chelate ring complex of Mn(II) derived from bis(5-phenyl-2H-1,2,4-triazole)-3-yl-disulfane and cleavage of the S-S bond in a Co(II) complex: Synthesis, spectral and structural characterization

    The reaction of Mn(OAc)2.4H2O with bis(5-phenyl-2H-1,2,4-triazole)-3-yl-disulfane (H2ptds.2H 2O) (1) yielded new complex [Mn(ptds)(o-phen)2] (2). It is observed that under similar conditions the reaction of Co(OAc)2 with H2ptds.2H2O (1) leads to thermolysis of the S-S bond of the disulfane to yield [Co(pts)(o-phen)2].H2O.0.5C 2H5OH, with the newly generated organic ligand 5-phenyl-2H-1,2,4-triazole- 3-sulfinate, (pts)2-. The ligand H 2ptds.2H2O (1), [Mn(ptds)(o-phen)2] (2) and [Co(pts)(o-phen)2]. H2O.0.5C2H5OH (3) crystallized into monoclinic, trigonal and triclinic crystal systems, respectively. The triazole ring nitrogen of the bidentate ligand chelates the Mn(II) center forming a seven membered chelate ring, while N, O donor sites of the resulting triazole sulfinate bond Co(II) to form a five membered chelate. The resulting complexes are paramagnetic and have a distorted octahedral geometry. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

    Forecasting of prices of commodities specially those of agricultural commodities is very difficult because they are not only governed by demand and supply but by so many other factors which are beyond control like weather vagaries, storage capacity, transportation etc. In this paper times series namely ARIMA (Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average) methodology given by Box and Jenkins has been used for forecasting prices of edible oils and this approach has been compared with ANN (Artificial Neural Network) methodology.

    Alloxan-induced diabetes in rabbits and effect of a herbal formulation D-400

    Adult male rabbits injected with alloxan (50 mg/kg, i.p.) were divided into two groups of nine each. One group received placebo and the other group an aqueous suspension of D-400, at the dose of 1 gm/kg body weight orally daily for 36 weeks. Blood glucose, blood urea and serum creatinine were estimated initially and at every 6-weekly intervals. At the end of 36 weeks D-400 significantly prevented the rise in blood urea and serum creatinine levels as compared to the control. Although a rise in blood sugar was noticed in both the groups, the level of blood sugar after 36 weeks was significantly lower in the D-400 treated group. This shows the favourable response of D-400 against alloxan-induced renal damage and hyperglycaemia.

    An automated course feedback system using opinion mining

    This paper presents our experimental work on designing an automated web-based course feedback system that uses opinion mining to compute the overall feedback score. The system collects user responses through an online form. The online feedback form consists of a set of binary and graded response questions as well as a free-form input text box where a student can write about his overall experiences with the course. Every student is encouraged to write in detail about his experience. The text entered by the student in free form input text box is then used for opinion mining to label the feedback as 'positive' or 'negative'. We have used an unsupervised SO-PMI-IR based approach for opinion mining. The final feedback of a course is thus a combination of an overall score (computed on various binary and graded questions) and a 'positive' or 'negative' label to mark the student's overall evaluation. We evaluated the system for more than 20 courses with a total of about 1000 reviews. © 2011 IEEE.

    An epidemiological study of dementia among the habitants of eastern Uttar Pradesh, India

    Dementia is one of the most serious health problems of the elderly and their caregivers. Objective: The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of dementia in the community, its sociodemographic and behavioral associates to determine the risk factors among resident of two districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh, India. Materials and Methods: This study was based on 2890 subjects aged 50 years and above, residing in rural areas of Mirzapur and urban areas of the Varanasi district of eastern Uttar Pradesh, India. Efforts were made to identify the subjects of age 50 years and above using cluster sampling. The Hindi Mental State Examination was used as the instrument tool to determine the score and a cut-off score of ≤23 was considered as the presence of dementia among the identified subjects. Results: The overall prevalence of dementia was found to be 5.1%. This percentage was increasing with age and decreasing with educational level. Among females, the prevalence of dementia was observed (7.2%) to be double than that in males (3.8%). Widows/widowers/ unmarried had a double prevalence (9.3%) as compared with married (4.3%) people. The age, gender, marital status, education, occupation, number of family members in the household and liquor addiction were found to be significantly associated with dementia. The relative risk for the above-mentioned variables was found to be more than 1.

    An experimental evaluation of possible teratogenic potential in Boerhaavia diffusa in albino rats

    The present study was undertaken to evaluate any possibility of teratogenic effects in Boerhaavia diffusa (Punarnava), a widely used herbal medicine for renal and urinary tract diseases by Ayurvedic physicians in India. The ethanolic extract of Boerhaavia diffusa (BDE) was administered daily in a dose of 250 mg/kg, body weight p.o., to pregnant albino female rats during the entire period of gestation. BDE was found to be devoid of any teratogenic effect as litter size and survival rate of foetuses were the same as for the normal control group and no foetal anomaly could be detected.

    Anti-oxidant potential of herbal formulation (Sahaj vati) modulating leptin, insulin activity

    Obesity increased at alarming rate is considered as a serious health risk and the World Health Organization wishes to halt the rise of obesity. Therefore, search for the treatment and dietary mediations is fundamental to lessen or potentially forestall the corpulence. Sahaj Vati was prepared using Shilajeet, Curcuma longa, Plumbago zeylanica, Commiphora mukul and might be helpful to reduce obesity. Twenty four albino rats were randomized into four equal groups and were selected as control, positive control, as standard (orlistat) and Sahaj Vati treated group, respectively. Monosodium glutamate (MSG) was administered at a dose of 10 mg/kg body weight for 10 days and Sahaj Vati & orlistat was regulated orally at portion of 200 and 10 mg/kg body weight individually for four week. After four week, the body weight of animals, serum leptin, insulin, total oxidant, total antioxidant and oxidative stress index were estimated. It was observed that body weight was significantly increased by MSG whereas body weight was significantly decreased by orlistat and Sahaj Vati. Sahaj Vati significantly increased insulin concentration, total anti-oxidant status and decreased total oxidant status & oxidative stress and significantly decreased leptin concentration. Thus, Sahaj Vati decreases body weight by modulating leptin & insulin concentration as well as total oxidant status, total anti-oxidant status & oxidative stress. © 2021, National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources.     Antidiabetic and antiulcer effects of extract of Eugenia jambolana seed in mild diabetic rats: Study on gastric mucosal offensive acid-pepsin secretion

    Diabetes has been reported to increase propensity to peptic ulceration through its effect both on offensive and defensive mucosal factors. Seeds of Eugenia jambolana (EJ) have been reported to have both antidiabetic as well as ulcer protective effects. The present study evaluates the antidiabetic effects of ethanolic extract of dried seed kernel of Eugenia jambolana (EJE) and its comparative effect on gastric ulceration and acidpepsin secretion with standard antisecretory FL-blocker. Ranitidine and antidiabetic glibenclamide with a premise that Eugenia jambolana may show better ulcer healing effects by promoting defensive or reducing offensive mucosal factors in mild diabetes (MD) rats. MD was produced in adult rats by administration of streptozotocin (45 mg/kg, ip). EJE was given orally in the doses of 100-400 mg/kg for 10 days and in the dose of 200 mg/kg for 30 days respectively to study its dose- and time-dependent effects on various diabetic parameters like blood glucose, serum cholesterol and triglycerides, insulin level and glycosylated hemoglobin. For ulcer protective and gastric secretion studies, EJE (200 mg/kg) was given orally for 10 days against 2 h cold restraint stress (CRS)-, 4 h pylorus ligation (PL), aspirin (ASP, 200 mg/kg, 4 h) - and 95% ethanol (EtOH, 1 ml/200 g, 1 h)-induced gastric ulcers and offensive acid-pepsin secretion after 4 h PL with cooccurring MD in rats. EJE showed dose-dependent decrease in blood glucose level in MD rats. Blood glucose level remained stable in mild diabetic rats from 3rd day onwards after streptozotocin administration (taken as 1st day for treatment) and EJE (200 mg/kg) showed anti-hyperglycemic effect on 10th day of its administration. Further, EJE in the above dose also decreased cholesterol level with little or no effect on triglycerides level and reversed the decrease and increase in insulin and glycosylated hemoglobin level near to the normal level as observed alter 30 days treatment in MD rats. MD rats exhibited an increased propensity to gastric ulceration induced by CRS, ASP, EtOH and PL and caused increase in acid-pepsin secretion. EJE was not only effective in reversing the increased propensity to ulceration in diabetic rats but also decreased the acid-pepsin output better than glibenclamide. The ulcer protective effect of Eugenia Jambolana seems to be due to its antidiabetic and gastric antisecretory effects.

    Application of thermodynamic model to study the electro-optical and structural properties of ferroelectric liquid crystal W-212

    In this paper, we have studied the influence of temperature on spontaneous polarization, tilt angle and pitch of chiral smectic C (Sm C*) phase in the vicinity of chiral smectic A to chiral smectic C (Sm A*–Sm C*) phase transition in a ferroelectric mesogen W-212 by employing the Landau-de-Gennes type free-energy density expansion (thermodynamic model). In this model the free-energy density of the system is written as an expansion in terms of tensor orientational order (Formula presented.), the scalar smectic order (Formula presented.), the polarization vector P, the wave vector q, and their mutual coupling terms. The values of Landau coefficients associated with various order parameter terms have been determined from the experimentally measured properties. Using these values of coefficients, the temperature variations of spontaneous polarization, tilt angle and pitch have been evaluated. A close agreement between experimental results and theoretical predictions have been found. © 2025 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

    ATHENA has been designed as a general purpose detector capable of delivering the full scientific scope of the Electron-Ion Collider. Careful technology choices provide fine tracking and momentum resolution, high performance electromagnetic and hadronic calorimetry, hadron identification over a wide kinematic range, and near-complete hermeticity. This article describes the detector design and its expected performance in the most relevant physics channels. It includes an evaluation of detector technology choices, the technical challenges to realizing the detector and the R&D required to meet those challenges. © 2022 The Author(s).

    Attenuation of metal toxicity by frankial siderophores

    In order to investigate the role of frankial siderophores in minimizing metal toxicity, Frankia strains were grown at different concentrations of Mg2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+. Growth was observed up to 500 mmol L-1 Mg2+, 10 μ mol L-1 Cu2+, and 10 μmolL-1 Zn2+ while the maxima were at 200 μmol L-1 Mg2+, 1 μmol L-1 Cu2+, and 1 μmol L-1 Zn2+. The siderophore production was increased up to 500 μmol L-1 Mg2+, 10 μmol L-1 Cu2+, 100 μmol L-1 (hydroxamate type), and 200 μmol L-1 (catecholate type) Zn2+ while maximum production was found at Mg2+ (200 μmol L-1), Cu2+ (10 μmol L-1), and Zn2+ (10 μ molL-1). The results suggested that the growth was protected at higher concentrations of Mg2+ (up to 500 μmol L-1), Cu2+ (10 μ molL-1), and Zn2+ (10 μ mol L-1), possibly due to enhanced siderophore production. Thus, siderophores minimize the metal-induced inhibition of growth in Frankia, likely due to regulation of nutritional imbalances and metabolic processes during adaptation towards metal stress and/or metal toxicity. © 2010 Taylor & Francis.

    Azadirachta indica attenuates colonic mucosal damage in experimental colitis induced by trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid

    Azadirachta indica leaves indicated the presence of active principles with proven antioxidants, antiinflammatory, immunomodulatory, free radical scavenging and healing properties. In the present study we evaluated the healing effects of 50% ethanol extract of dried leaves of Azadirachta indica on trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid-induced colitis in rats. Azadirachta indica extract (500 mg/kg) was administered orally, once daily for 14 days and studied for its effects on diarrhoea, food and water intake, body weight changes, colonic damage and inflammation, histology, antibacterial activity and free radicals (nitric oxide and lipid peroxidation), antioxidants (superoxide dismutase, catalase and reduced glutathione) and myeloperoxidase activities in colonic tissue. Intracolonic trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid increased colonic mucosal damage and inflammation, diarrhea, but decreased body weight which were reversed by Azadirachta indica extract and sulfasalazine (positive control) treatments. Azadirachta indica extract showed antibacterial activity. Azadirachta indica extract and sulfasalazine enhanced the antioxidants but decreased free radicals and myeloperoxidase activities affected in trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid-induced colitis. Azadirachta indica extract, thus seemed to be effective in healing trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid-induced colitis in rats.

    Bianchi type I cosmological model with a cosmological constant (Λ) in creation-field cosmology

    Solutions of Einstein’s field equations with a cosmological constant Λ in the presence of a creation field have been obtained for Bianchi type I cosmological models in the Hoyle-Narlikar creation field theory. The cosmological parameters are calculated. We examine the nature of the creation field and the cosmological constant which dominate at the early stage of the universe, but they do not survive for a long time and finally tend to zero at large cosmic times. © 2015, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

    Biomimetic synthesis and characterization of semiconducting hybrid organic-inorganic composite materials based on polyaniline-polyethylene glycol-CdS system

    Triple hybrid materials based on polyaniline-polyethylene glycol and cadmium sulphide have been prepared by the duffusion-limited biomimetic route and characterized by a number of spectroscopic, XRD, SEM, thermal and electrical measurements. These hybrid materials have been prepared by controlled precipitation of cadmium sulphide by passing H2S gas and mixing the resultant colloid with the acidic solution of aniline. In situ polymerization of adsorbed anilinium ions on anionic surface of CdS resulted in hybrids. Water-soluble polyethylene glycol led to diffusion-limited growth of polyaniline and CdS resulting in a nanosized hybrid material as indicated by UV-visible spectra, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). AC impedance spectroscopic studies on binary and ternary nanocomposites of polyaniline with polyethylene glycol and cadmium sulphide separately and triple hybrid system have been reported. Equivalent circuits were determined and discussed in the light of contributions made from different sources such as grain, grain boundary and electrode. © Indian Academy of Sciences.

    Candidates for twin chiral bands in Rh 102

    Excited states in Rh102, populated in the fusion-evaporation reaction Zr94(B11,3n)Rh102 at a beam energy of 36 MeV, were studied using the Indian National Gamma Array spectrometer at Inter University Accelerator Center, New Delhi. The angular correlations and the electromagnetic character of some of the gamma-ray transitions observed were investigated in detail. A new chiral candidate sister band was found. Lifetimes of exited states in both chiral candidate bands of Rh102 were measured for the first time in the A∼100 mass region by means of the Doppler-shift attenuation technique. The derived reduced transition probabilities are compared to the predictions of the two quasiparticles plus triaxial rotor model. Both experimental results and calculations do not support the presence of static chirality in Rh102. © 2014 American Physical Society.

    Cd(II) Dithiocarbamate Complexes: Synthesis, Spectral Studies, Thermogravimetric Analysis and Semiconducting Behaviour

    Five new homoleptic Cd(II) dithiocarbamate complexes (1-5) have been synthesized and characterized by IR, NMR, UV-visible spectroscopic and thermogravimetric analysis. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction study of complex 1 revealed a triclinic system with space group P-1 and possesses a centrosymmetric dimeric structure. In this complex, both C-H···S and C-H···π intermolecular interactions are playing a crucial role in the stabilization of the dithiocarbamate complex. Complexes (1-5) show weak conductivity at ambient temperature (rt = 10-9-10-10 S·cm-1) because of the absence of M···S/S···S intermolecular stacking. Plot of log versus T-1 in the 303-363 K range indicates their semiconducting behaviour. However, their electrical conductivities gradually increase with increasing temperature and ideally decrease with decreasing temperature range showing their semiconducting nature. TGA showed thermal decomposition of complexes into CdS as the final product with grain size of 1-10 nm. © 2023 Chemical Publishing Co.. All rights reserved.

    Cerebrospinal fluid and serum zinc, copper, magnesium and calcium levels in children with idiopathic seizure

    Objectives: The present study was conducted to observe the alteration and their relations in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum Zinc (Zn), Copper (Cu), Magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca) levels in patients with different types of idiopathic seizure and to determine the ratios of serum and CSF Ca/Mg and Cu/Zn. Methods: The children aged 1 to 14 years, having two or more unprovoked seizures, which were detected by normal MRI scan and abnormal EEG were included in the study group. The control group consisted of 40 healthy children without seizure. Zn, Mg and Cu levels in CSF and serum were analyzed by an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Results: The study subjects included 34 generalized seizures (GS), 5 cases of simple partial seizure (SPS) and 5 Complex partial seizures (CPS). Serum copper (Cu) was significantly elevated (P-0.01) in children with seizures. Within the seizure group, serum Mg was significantly increased in GS and serum copper (Cu) levels were significantly increased in CPS and GS as compared to controls (p-0.001). However, calcium and zinc levels did not show any significant change in all groups. CSF Calcium was significantly increased in CPS patients. The ratio obtained for the levels of these parameters revealed a significant increase in serum Cu/Zn ratio (P-0.002) and CSF Ca/Mg (P-0.04) in patients with idiopathic seizure as compared to controls. This ratio was also significant between SPS versus CPS and CPS versus GS. Conclusion: The findings of the present study suggest that high serum Cu and the increased ratio of serum Cu/Zn and CSF Ca/ Mg may be responsible for enhanced neuronal excitability in children with idiopathic seizures.
