    Allogenic decalbone in the repair of benign cystic lesions of bone

    Forty-six cases of benign cystic lesions of bone were treated by curettage and compact filling using partially decalcified allogenic bone graft (Decalbone); of these, 35 were available for study. Decalbone was prepared by partial decalcification with 0.6 N hydrochloric acid (HCl) of human bones generally obtained from freshly amputated limbs. The commonest lesions of bone were giant cell tumours (14) and aneurysmal bone cysts (15), and the commonest bones involved were the femur (23) and the tibia (12). There was one failure and four recurrences. Five cases were infected but this did not interfere with healing of the primary lesion. Radiological incorporation of the graft was seen at about 3 months in unicameral bone cysts, at 4-6 months in aneurysmal bone cysts and at 6-9 months in giant cell tumours. There was no recurrence in any case of giant cell tumour, but three aneurysmal bone cysts recurred. There was no clinical immune reaction. © 1992 Springer-Verlag.

    An Approach to Understand Conservation Agriculture

    The struggle to feed the growing population and protecting the environment together is the real challenge of modern-day agriculture. The traditional tillage-based agriculture system has caused serious threat to natural resources such as soil, water, air, and biodiversity. A paradigm shift from conventional agriculture to conservation agriculture is needed to ensure sustainable crop production along with protection of the environment. Conservation agriculture works on three basic principles of minimum tillage and soil disturbance, permanent soil cover with crop residues and live mulches, and crop rotation and intercropping. Conservation agriculture in comparison to conventional agriculture has multiple agronomic, economic, and environmental benefits. Across the globe, the 125 million ha land is under conservation agriculture. This sustainable system can be practiced in any soil condition and any size of farm land. In India, conservation agriculture is famous in the rice–wheat cropping system of Indo-Gangetic region. Variety of practices are enlisted under conservation agriculture, but the major ones are zero tillage, minimum tillage, surface seeding, bed planting, direct seeding, precision farming, etc. Irrespective of so many benefits, the adoption of conservation agriculture faces many constraints and challenges such as availability of skilled labor, burning of crop residue, alternate use of crop residue for feed and fuel, time taking process, and less information about conservation practices. Conservation agriculture has impacted different types of crops. Thus, to safeguard our environment and increase the yield, the farming community inclusive of farmers, agricultural scientists, extension workers, and other agents should work together to promote the practice of conservation agriculture, so we can provide our next generation with both enough food and natural resources. © 2022 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

    Changing consumption pattern of agricultural commodities in Uttar Pradesh: An inter regional analysis

    The consumption pattern in India underwent a sweeping structural change and now it tends towards assuming a new mobility. India has been projected as the next consumer powerhouse. The economy witnessed structural and compositional changes in the consumption basket of rural and urban sectors and across income groups over the last three decades. Among all states in India, Uttar Pradesh is one of the fastest developing states. The analysis of changing food consumption pattern over time would help in designing appropriate policies related to food production and distribution. Thus the present study empirically revealed striking difference in the consumption pattern of households across rural and urban sectors, regions and income categories in Uttar Pradesh. The findings were in conformity with Engel's law. The analysis of consumption pattern, using two rounds of consumption expenditure survey conducted by NSSO, also revealed a structural shift towards high value agricultural commodities like milk, fruits, vegetables and non-vegetarian products in the state. Structural shift was evident among all the regions, but with inter-regional variations. High disparity among income classes and rural-urban disparities in MPCE were observed. The structural shift and diversification of food basket has definite implications on food security and welfare of the households in state Uttar Pradesh. © 2017 Indian Society of Agricultural Economics.     Comparative study between analgesic effect of breast feeding and oral sucrose in full term newborns

    Introduction: Non-pharmacological measures like oral sucrose and breast feeding are recommended modalities to treat acute procedural pain in newborns. Birth dose of hepatitis B vaccine exposes newborns to pain of intramuscular injection which is preventable. The present study has been carried out to assess the severity of pain and the effect of breast feeding and oral sucrose. Aim: To study the pain profile and the effects of breast feeding and oral sucrose solution on pain, in full term newborns. Materials and Methods: A prospective interventional case control study was carried out in the Department of Paediatrics and Post natal ward of Obstetrics and Gynaecology associated Gandhi Memorial Hospital. Randomly selected 150 full term vaginally delivered healthy newborns were enrolled in the study. Recruited newborn infants were grouped into three arms and each arm had 50 newborns. Group I as control group, and group II and III as intervention groups. A 1 mL of 25% oral sucrose solution was given two minutes before the vaccination in group II. Breast feeding was started 2 minutes before vaccination and continued till the end of injection in group III. The primary outcome of the study was to assess pain by Premature Infant Pain Profile (PIPP) score. PIPP score was compared by using ANOVA test and student's t-test was used to compare continuous variables and two tailed Fisher-exact test or Chi-square test was used to compare categorical variables. The critical levels of significance of the results were considered at 0.05 levels i.e., p<0.05 was considered significant. Results: Mean PIPP scores were lower in group III (8.36) than in group II (11.06) and difference was significant (p<0.0001). The pain profile of newborns ranged from 9 to 18 with mean of 14.26 in group I, from 5 to 12 with mean of 11.06 in group II and from 1 to 12 with mean of 8.36 in group III respectively. Conclusion: Intramuscular injection produces moderate to severe pain response in group I and mild to moderate pain responses in group II and III. Breast feeding provides superior analgesia to oral sucrose and reduces moderate to severe painful response to mild to moderate grade in term newborns. © 2018, Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research.     Comparative study of biofortified and non-biofortified wheat in Uttar Pradesh, India : Combating nutritional security through biofortification

    Biofortification is the process of enriching the staple food crops with nutrients and a way towards more nourishing future. India ranks number one in terms of low birth weight infants at an estimated 7.4 million undernourished kids. Mild to moderate zinc deficiency (ZnD) is common in India because the commonly consumed staple foods have low zinc contents. The prevalence of zinc deficiency is reported 48.1 per cent among under five years children in Uttar Pradesh. The present study is carried out to assess the health benefits of biofortified wheat in Uttar Pradesh by using Disability-adjusted Life Years (DALYs) method. The current burden of ZnD in Uttar Pradesh is estimated to be 0.91 million DALYs lost, out of which 888517 DALYs from mortality and 24538 DALYs due to morbidity. The comparative economics between biofortified and non-biofortified wheat variety revealed that there is no significant difference in the cost of cultivation and other characteristics like cooking quality, taste, appearance of the varieties. The zinc biofortification was found to be very cost-effective as the cost of saving one DALYs ranges from Rs. 79 to Rs. 177. Therefore, the zinc biofortification is a promising tool to achieve the goal of nutritional security in Uttar Pradesh as well as India.

    Engineered Biochar as Soil Fertilizer

    Biochar, a heterogeneous carbonaceous material, has multifaceted application potential for environmental management. Biochar has been commonly used for contaminant removal from soil and water systems, soil quality improvement, soil C-sequestration, inoculant carrier, etc. Surface area, pore space, surface functional groups, pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and nutrient contents are a few key properties that determine the potential of biochar application. Raw materials and pyrolysis conditions are the determining factors for these aforesaid properties of biochar. Biochar production from lignocellulosic biomass and biosolids at moderate pyrolysis temperatures (350-600 °C) are commonly recommended for waste management. Despite its multifaceted application potential, biochar utilization at widescale is limited due to certain incompatibilities with the environmental systems. To overcome the incompatibilities between biochar properties and environmental conditions, engineering of biochar by using different additives and modifications in pyrolysis conditions are getting wider attention nowadays. In this chapter, we have explored the potential of engineered biochar as soil fertilizer. A bibliometric analysis was performed to collate the literature and to see the research trend of engineered biochar as soil fertilizer. Studies reported that engineering of biochar leads to improvement in its surface and physicochemical properties. Engineered biochar with improved properties helps in enhancing soil physicochemical, nutrient, and biological properties after amelioration. Improvement in soil properties showed better crop productivity in some pot/laboratory experiments. Overall, we observed that the research on exploring engineered biochar as soil fertilizer is comparatively limited as compared to its exploration as contaminant adsorbent and source of energy production. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2022.

    The free convective boundary layer flow over the surface of a sphere whose temperature is suddenly raised to a value greater than its surroundings, is considered. Numerical solutions of the boundary layer equations are presented which give a complete description of the flow and which confirm the appearance of a singularity in the solution at the upper pole after a finite time. © 1987.

    Growth and price dynamics in pigeon pea in Gujarat

    An attempt has been made to examine the growth pattern in area, production and yield of pigeon pea and to analyse the contribution of area and productivity/yield in the production of pigeon pea and to look into the degree of variation in area, production and productivity/yield together with price trend, pattern of market arrivals and price behaviour in the State of Gujarat, India. The study exhibits area entrusted to the crop has been decreasing which results in the exponential decay in production. Yield growth pattern exhibits significant growth in 21st century (11.7 per cent). The study showed that the yield effect dominated over the area effect during 2001-12 (59.29 per cent). The production growth rate is found to be positive and significant during 1971-80 and in 1981-90, the production growth rate is found to be positive in all periods except 1991-2000. During this period area expansion was observed. During the period 1991-2000 and 2001-2012 the area and production registered the exponential decay, but the price showed upward trend with the growth rate of 7.9 per cent. On the basis of findings, it was concluded that despite of the area contraction Gujarat has high growth rate in yield. The yield (1184 kg/ha) of Gujarat is higher over the India average (650 kg/ha) as well as world average (770.7 kg/ha). The increasing price trend is capable enough to encourage the State farmers to grow this crop on the large area in years to come. The variations in price of pigeon pea was found to be more as compared to the variations in market arrival, which indicates that the farmers tend to sell low volume to the regulated markets, which leads to the price high trend throughout the study period. The increasing price trend shows the inverse relationship between the market arrivals in regulated markets and price.

    Impact of resource conservation technologies on carbon emission in major wheat growing regions of India

    The demand for food-grains in India is growing very fast due to increase in population coupled with rising economic status of the common people. The prime objective of the present study is to estimate and compare the carbon dioxide and carbon emission by direct use of fossil fuels in farm operations under the conventional and resource conservation systems in major wheat growing regions of India. There is also an urgent need to tackle the problems associated with RCTs and provide incentives to farmers during the initial phase of adoption to compensate for initial yield reduction and financial support and subsidy for procurement of machinery associated with technology should be provided to harness its full potential. The carbon dioxide and carbon emission from burning of fossil fuel would be 1.46 million tons and 0.394 million tons, respectively.

    Market arrivals and price behaviour of potato: A study of selected markets of Uttar Pradesh

    With a share of 28.70 percent in the total area in the country, Uttar Pradesh is one the largest producer of potatoes in the country. Potato is a semi-perishable crop, and every year the fluctuations can be seen in the arrivals and prices of the crop. The present study was conducted in the selected five markets of Uttar Pradesh to analyse the behaviour of arrivals and prices, including the Agra market, as Agra is the largest potato-producing district. The annual growth rate in the area and production of the potato was found to be positive and significant statistically. The variability in the monthly arrivals and potato prices was highest in Lucknow and Bareilly markets. The effect of the monthly arrivals on prices was negative and significant statistically. The seasonal index of the arrivals showed that arrivals were maximum from December to March, and prices were lower during these months. The correlation among all market prices was statistically significant and positive, depicting moderate to high market integration. Thus, the study suggested that establishing a scientific storage structure, market information dissemination, and proper check on market arrivals and prices would reduce their variability. © 2021 The Society of Economics and Development, except certain content provided by third parties.

    Modal analysis and dispersion curves of a curvilinear triangular cored light guide using Goell's point matching method

    This paper gives, in brief the theoretical and computational investigation of a new light guide having a curvilinear triangular core cross-section. This structure is here introduced for the first time and may be conceived as a distortion of a rectangular core cross-section. Using Goell's point matching method under weak guidance approximation, the modal characteristics equations for the lowest order mode have been derived in two cases. In one case, all the sides of the proposed light guide are bounded by dielectric material. In other case we will consider all the sides bounded by conducting materials. From these equations the modal dispersion curves are obtained and compared. It is seen that the dielectric light guide supports more modes than the metallic light guide. Thus, metallic light guide may be used as a mode filter. © 2006 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.
