A clinicopathological study of primary gastrointestinal lymphoma
(1981) Saroj Gupta; Girish C. Pant
A retrospective analysis of 48 cases of histologically proven primary gastrointestinal lymphoma was done. The analysis covered a 12‐year period from January 1966 through December 1977. Four percent of all malignant tumors of the gastrointestinal tract were of this type. Males outnumbered females by a ratio of 1.8:1. The mean age of the patients was 21 years. The vagueness and variability of clinical features and nonspecific radiological findings were the main reasons for subjecting all the patients in this series to laparotomy. The most common site of involvement was the ileocecal region, followed by the ileum, the jejunum, and the stomach. Most of the cases were in an advanced stage of the disease as was suggested by the finding of lump in 60% and ascites in 20% of the cases. Radical resection, possible in only six cases, appears to be the best treatment. The effectiveness of radiotherapy and chemotherapy were disappointing. Prognostically, cases of localized and polypoidal lesions of the small bowel and Hodgkin lymphoma showed better survival. Copyright © 1981 Wiley‐Liss, Inc., A Wiley Company

Adult polio‐like syndrome following Enterovirus 70 conjunctivitis (natural history of the disease)
    (1983) B.C. Katiyar; S. Misra; R.B. Singh; A.K. Singh; Saroj Gupta; A.K. Gulati; Mrs.S. Christopher; T. Jacob John
ABSTRACT‐ During the Indian EV 70 conjunctivitis epidemic in 1981, 79 patients with neurological complications were evaluated by clinical, electro‐physiological, histopathological and virological studies. The disease was heralded by an attack of conjunctivitis and was followed, after a variable latent period, by a pre‐paralytic, paralytic, and post‐paralytic stage of slow recovery. The above events occurred in an orderly sequence. The paralysis affected the cranial nerves, limbs or both. The clinical course closely simulated poliomyelitis, without any evidence of radiculopathy or myelo‐pathy. Cranial nerve palsies were seen in approximately half of the patients. The electrophysiological and histological studies pointed towards the affection of anterior horn cells. The raised neutralizing antibody titres to Enterovirus 70, confirmed the aetiology of the disease. On the available data, we believe that this nosological entity should be considered under the general title of “polio‐like syndrome” following EV 70 conjunctivitis. On account of two epidemics in 1971 and 1981 with unfavourable prognosis and high resultant disability, and because of lack of specific therapy, it has become imperative to develop, as a top priority, a vaccine for immunization. 1983 Blackwell Munksgaard

Anti-ulcerogenic effect of banana powder (Musa sapientum var. paradisiaca) and its effect on mucosal resistance
    (1986) R.K. Goel; Saroj Gupta; R. Shankar; A.K. Sanyal
Orally administered banana pulp powder (Musa sapientum var. paradisiaca) was shown to have significant anti-ulcerogenic activity in rats subjected to aspirin, indomethacin, phenylbutazone, prednisolone and cysteamine and in guinea-pigs subjected to histamine. Banana powder not only increased mucosal thickness but also significantly increased [3H]thymidine incorporation into mucosal DNA. Relative to untreated control sections, histological studies showed that banana treatment increased staining by alcian blue in the apical cells with staining noted in the deeper layers of the mucosal glands. Banana-treated and control sections were also stained for DNA by the Feulgen reaction. The banana-treated sections showed a greater aggregation and intensity of pink spots when compared to controls. The present study suggests that banana powder treatment not only strengthens mucosal resistance against ulcerogens but also promotes healing by inducing cellular proliferation. © 1986.

Argyrophilic nucleolar organizer regions: Their value and correlation with clinical prognostic factors in breast carcinoma
(1997) Anand Kumar; Anand Kumar Kushwaha; Mohan Kumar; Saroj Gupta
Background and Objectives: Argyrophilic nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) have been recently identified as a marker of proliferative index in various tumors. These were evaluated in 46 patients with primary breast carcinoma and were correlated with clinical prognostic parameters of breast cancer. Ten patients with benign breast tumors served as controls in the study. Methods: AgNORs were stained in paraffin sections of the tissues using Ploton's silver technique. For each specimen, the number of AgNORs within the nuclei of 100 tumor cells were calculated. The average number of AgNORs per nucleus was calculated and the results expressed as mean ± S.D. Results: AgNOR count was significantly higher in breast carcinoma (6.61 ± 1.75) than in benign breast tumors (1.88 ± 0. 19). Further, the AgNOR count in breast carcinoma showed a statistically significant increase in correlation with the increase in the size of the tumor, stage of the cancer, number of metastatic lymph nodes, and tumor recurrence at various sites. However, the differences in AgNOR count at different lymph node levels and histologic grading were not statistically significant. Conclusions: These results indicate that breast tumors with a higher AgNOR count, even at the initial stage, have a poor prognosis and require aggressive treatment for better control of the disease. Further, it is suggested that the patients with a benign tumor and more than three AgNORs per nucleus need careful surveillance.

Blood group specific substances in saliva of patients with cervical carcinoma
    (1981) Y.N. Gupta; Saroj Gupta; B. Sanyal
Secretion of blood group specific substances in saliva of 380 patients with carcinoma of the cervix was studied, along with age-matched controls. The study shows that carcinoma of the uterine cervix is much more common in non-secretors (55.0%) than in secretors (45.0%). Statistically, this difference was found to be highly significant (P < 0.001). © 1981.

Carcinoma Associated with Renal Tuberculosis: A Report of Two Cases, with a Brief Review of the Literature
    (1973) M.L. Mehrotra; I.M. Gupta; N.N. Khanna; Saroj Gupta
Two cases of carcinoma and renal tuberculosis occurring in the same kidney, a rare association, are reported. The tuberculous process was apparently overshadowed by the more obvious coexistent tumour, and detected as an incidental finding. A possible explanation for the extremely rare association of carcinoma and renal tuberculosis is discussed. Copyright © 1973, Wiley Blackwell. All rights reserved

    Carcinoma in choledochal cyst
(1981) Saroj Gupta; Anand Kumar; Sudarshan K. Gupta
Two cases of choledochal cyst associated with adenocarcinoma are documented. The classical triad of jaundice, abdominal mass, and pain is not distinctive enough to make the preoperative diagnosis of a choledochal cyst and its associated malignancy. Operative cholangiogram is a very important investigation, as by the presence of a filling defect in the cyst it can suggest malignancy. In our cases the diagnosis of malignancy was made at operation, which was confirmed by histopathological examination. Internal drainage procedures in combination with chemotherapy by 5 FU rendered both the cases asymptomatic. Copyright © 1981 Wiley‐Liss, Inc., A Wiley Company

Characterization and histopathological correlation of cytosol proteins of benign and malignant breast tumors
(1991) Hari D. Khanna; Debasis Das; Jagadish N. Kashyap; Saroj Gupta; Sushila Khanna
Significant differences in cytosol protein level exist between normal/benign and cancerous breast tissues. There is a positive correlation between the cytosol protein level and histological grade of carcinoma. Well‐differentiated carcinoma have a lower value of cytosol protein than poorly differentiated carcinoma. In slab gel electrophoregrams, the total numbers of bands are almost identical in normal, benign, and malignant conditions. In addition, 37 Kd protein band is consistently present in malignant cases and always absent in normal or benign cases. More extensive biophysical examination of this band may provide further insight into the protein alterations in cancer cells at the molecular level. Copyright © 1991 Wiley‐Liss, Inc., A Wiley Company

Desquamation of malignant cells in carcinoma of the uterine cervix: Its role in prognosis
(1982) Saroj Gupta; Y.N. Gupta; Abha Rani; B. Sanyal; S. Khanna
Percentage of malignant cell exfoliation in relation to that of benign epithelial cells was studied in pretreatment vaginal smears of 251 patients of squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix. The rate of exfoliation did not increase with increasing clinical severity. Also, the various cell types of squamous cell carcinoma and clinical radiation response were independent of number of malignant cells shed in the vagina. However, the group of patients having a fewer number of malignant cells in their vaginal smears had a statistically significantly better five‐year survival. Doppler ultrasound scoring to predict chemotherapeutic response in advanced breast cancer
(2007) Anand Kumar; Seema Singh; Satyajit Pradhan; Ram C. Shukla; Mumtaz A. Ansari; Tej B. Singh; Rohit Shyam; Saroj Gupta
Background: Doppler ultrasonography (US) is increasingly being utilized as an imaging modality in breast cancer. It is used to study the vascular characteristics of the tumor. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy is the standard modality of treatment in locally advanced breast cancer. Histological examination remains the gold standard to assess the chemotherapy response. However, based on the color Doppler findings, a new scoring system that could predict histological response following chemotherapy is proposed. Methods: Fifty cases of locally advanced infiltrating duct carcinoma of the breast were studied. The mean age of the patients was 44.5 years. All patients underwent clinical, Doppler and histopathological assessment followed by three cycles of CAF (Cyclophosphamide, Adriamycin and 5-Fluorouracil) chemotherapy, repeat clinical and Doppler examination and surgery. The resected specimens were examined histopathologically and histological response was correlated with Doppler findings. The Doppler characteristics of the tumor were graded as 1-4 for <25%, 25-50%, >50% and complete disappearance of flow signals respectively. A cumulative score was calculated and compared with histopathological response. Results were analyzed using Chi square test, sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values. Results: The maximum Doppler score according to the proposed scoring system was twelve and minimum three. Higher scores corresponded with a more favorable histopathological response. Twenty four patients had complete response to chemotherapy. Sixteen of these 24 patients (66.7%) had a cumulative Doppler score more than nine. The sensitivity of cumulative score >5 was 91.7% and specificity was 38.5%. The area under the ROC curve of the cumulative score >9 was 0.72. Conclusion: Doppler scoring can be accurately used to objectively predict the response to chemotherapy in patients with locally advanced breast cancer and it correlates well with histopathological response. © 2007 Kumar et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

Evaluation of leukocyte adherence inhibition (LAI) test in primary and secondary hepatic malignancies
    (1984) B.V. Tantry; A.K. Jain; Saroj Gupta; J.P. Gupta
Leukocyte adherence inhibition (LAI) has been demonstrated to be a simple, rapid, and reliable technique in the diagnosis of various malignancies including hepatocellular carcinoma. The LAI test was carried out employing modified tube LAI technique in patients with primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and secondary carcinomas of liver. Positive LAI response to HCC antigen was obtained in all six (100%) cases of hepatocellular carcinoma tested. None of the control cases, which included 8 healthy subjects and 16 cases of benign liver diseases, gave positive LAI response. Two out of 19 cases of secondary carcinoma gave a positive LAI reaction to HCC antigen. In secondary carcinomas, 19 out of 21 cases (90.48%) gave positive LAI reaction to secondary adenocarcinoma antigen. There were two false positives in controls (1 each of cirrhosis and amebic liver abscess), and 1 out of 8 cases of HCC also gave positive response to secondary carcinoma antigen. Thus, LAI test was found to be useful in the diagnosis of hepatic malignancies. Copyright © 1984 Wiley‐Liss, Inc., A Wiley Company

Functional beta cell regeneration in the islets of pancreas in alloxan induced diabetic rats by (-)-epicatechin
    (1982) B.K. Chakravarthy; Saroj Gupta; K.D. Gode
(-)-Epicatechin (1), a naturally occuring flavonoid compound was found to have reversed the diabetogenic action of alloxan in albino rats (2). (-)-Epicatechin administration in doses of 30 mg/kg (i.p) twice daily for 4-5 days in alloxan induced (150 mg/kg, i.p.) diabetic albino rats (either sex), has brought down the high blood sugar levels to normal values. Concurrent histological studies of the pancreas of these animals showed regeneration of the beta-cell population of the islets which were earlier necrosed by alloxan. Immunoreactive insulin (IRI) studies showed that the regenerated beta-cells of the islets of pancreas are functional in nature. © 1982.

Gastroscopic cytology and biopsies in diagnosis of gastric malignancies
    (1983) J.P. Gupta; A.K. Jain; B.K. Agrawal; Saroj Gupta
The outcome in gastric malignancy has changed in recent years owing to its early and accurate diagnosis employing fiber‐optic endoscopy and histocytology. One hundred and two subjects with endoscopic demonstration of various gastric lesions were subjected for brush cytology and multiple biopsies. Observing a high degree of specificity, the accuracy of brush cytology was 81% and histology 72% with cumulative diagnostic yield of 91%. There was no false‐positive report with cytology; histology, however, gave three false‐positive results. The present study thus confirms the high diagnostic accuracy of brush cytology combined with multiple biopsies in gastric malignancies. Copyright © 1983 Wiley‐Liss, Inc., A Wiley Company

Germ cell tumors in Indian children
(1988) Sushila Khanna; N.C. Arya; I.M. Gupta; Saroj Gupta; G.D. Singhal
The present paper is a retrospective study of one hundred and thirty five germ cell tumors seen in children at the University Hospital, Varanasi during a period of 21 years. These tumors constituted 7.5% of all solid tumors in the pediatric age group. Histologically 89 tumors (65.9%) were benign and 46 (34.1%) were malignant. Eighty percent of ovarian and all the testicular germ cell tumors were malignant. Thirty per cent of the tumors were located in the sacrococcyx. The ovaries were the next common site. There were 80 girls, 53 boys, and 2 cases in which the sex was not recorded. The predominance amongst girls was mainly due to the more frequent involvement of ovaries as compared to the testes. Twenty nine of the children were in the first year of life. The factors probably responsible for the higher incidence of malignancy, the differences in anatomic location, and the sex distribution in comparison to other reports have been examined and discussed. Histiocytes in vaginal smears: As prognostic parameter in carcinoma of the uterine cervix
(1981) Saroj Gupta; Abha Rani; Y.N. Gupta; B. Sanyal; S. Khanna
Pretreatment vaginal smears of 251 patients with carcinoma of the cervix were counted for the percentage of histiocyte count in relation to benign squamous epithelial cells. No correlation was found between the percentage of histiocyte count and the age of the patient, clinical stage, cell type of squamous cell carcinoma, and clinical radiation response. Also a high histiocyte count is found to be unrelated to 5‐year survival, recurrence, metastasis, or death of these patients. The present study indicates that the histiocyte number appears to have no relationship with immediate or remote prognosis in patients with carcinoma of cervix uteri. Internal Herniation of the Small Bowel after Gastro‐Enterostomy
    (1974) Saroj Gupta; T.R.G. Rao
Herniation of the small bowel through the ring formed after posterior retrocolic gastro‐enterostomy is a possible cause of acute bowel obstruction. Although this well‐recognized complication of gastro‐enterostomy is rarely encountered, the possibility of its presence must be borne in mind if the clinical condition of the patient suggests small‐bowel obstruction following gastric surgery.
