PublicationArticle Biochemical basis of psychosomatic constitution(1975) K.N. Udupa; R.H. Singh; G.P. Dubey; V. Rai; M.B. SinghEighty four apparently healthy normal males were psychosomatotyped following modified Sheldon's technique. Simultaneously, these volunteers were subjected to a biochemical determination of plasma diamine oxidase (DAO), plasma mono amine oxidase (MAO) and RBC cholinesterase (ChE). The final analysis of the data indicates a significant relative preponderance of DAO, MAO and ChE in Endo, Meso and Ecto morphs, respectively. As these enzymes have known parallelism with the respective neurohumors, namely acetylcholine, catecholamine and histamine, these biochemical types may be designated as histotrophic, vasotrophic and neurotrophics, respectively, in view of the specific functions of the three neurohumors.PublicationArticle Blood histamine and histaminase in leprosy patients: a short communication(1977) V. Rai; G. Singh; R.H. Singh; K.N. UdupaIn 91 patients of different types of leprosy, blood levels of histamine and histaminase were studied and compared to matched normal controls. The leprosy patients showed markedly raised levels of both histamine and histaminase as compared to controls. This rise was more pronounced in cases of leprosy with a history of longer duration. Patients of leprosy in reaction showed the maximum levels whereas tuberculoid, borderline and lepromatous cases showed moderate levels and others minimum changes.PublicationArticle Comparative biochemical studies on meditation(1975) K.N. RaiNeurohumoral, endocrine and metabolic studies were conducted on two groups of volunteers (10 from India and 10 from Western countries) who underwent a 10 day course of meditation in a meditation camp. They showed some significant biochemical changes. The blood neuro humors and the related enzymes, namely RBC acetylcholine, RBC cholinesterase, plasma catecholamines and plasma histaminase were found increased; while plasma cortisol, urinary corticoids and urinary nitrogen were found decreased. This indicates that after the course of meditation these subjects were physically stable and were under a less stressful state while they were mentally more active and in a state of increased awareness.PublicationArticle Histamine and histaminase levels in the blood(1977) V. Kumar; O.P. Mishra; S. GuptaThis study evaluates the frequency of 5, 10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T mutation in eastern Uttar Pradesh population (UP). PCR-RFLP method was used for the detection of C677T mutation. In total 139 subjects were analyzed for the MTHFR C677T polymorphism. Genotype frequencies of CC, CT and TT were found to be 0.928, 0.065 and 0.007 respectively. The frequency of T allele was 0.039. ©IJIB, All rights reserved.PublicationArticle Response of NaCl-adapted and unadapted Azolla pinnata-Anabaena azollae complex to salt-stress: Partial photosynthetic processes and respiration(2000) A.K. Rai; V. RaiChl a and b content in adapted complex, Azolla pinnata-Anabaena aźollae was almost unchanged in response to 60 mM NaCl, while the values changed in the unadapted complex, resulting in an altered chl a/b ratio of the latter. Salinity increased the photosynthetic O2 evolution in unadapted as well as adapted complex. However, the stimulation was rapid in the unadapted complex and reached its optimum within 12 h, whereas a gradual increase was evident in the adapted complex. Exposure of the unadapted complex to 60 mM NaCl resulted in enhanced PSII (27%) and PSI (10%) electron transport activity, while a decrease of 45% was evident in the whole chain activity. The complex adapted to 60 mM NaCl showed a reduction of 22% in PSI electron transport activity relative to that of the control, but appeared to adjust the PSII and whole chain electron transport activity. The effect of NaCl on in vitro electron transport activity showed that the PSII electron transport activity was most sensitive to NaCl, followed by PSI and cyt b6-f activity. A moderate salinity of 20 mM NaCl was found stimulatory to PSI electron transport activity. The unadapted complex stressed with NaCl respired at higher rates in comparison to the control and the adapted complex incubated in the presence of NaCl.PublicationArticle Uttar pradesh methionine synthase reductase A66g polymorphism in rural population of Uttar Pradesh (India)(2011) V. GuptaThe present study was aimed to analyze methionine synthase reductase (MTRR) A66G polymorphism in Uttar Pradesh (UP) population and PCR-RFLP method was used for the mutation analysis. Total 104 samples were analyzed and AA genotype was found in 10 individuals, AG genotype in 67 individuals and GG in 27 individuals. The frequencies of AA, AG and GG genotypes in the present study were also assessed with the expected distribution (i.e. Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium) by using X2 test. The genotype frequencies of AA, AG and GG were 0.096, 0.644 and 0.259, respectively. Allelic frequencies of A and G were 0.418 and 0.581. It was reflected from the results of the present study that the percentage of heterozygous genotype (AG) is highest in the target population. © 2011 Asian Network for Scientific Information.
