PublicationArticle Electrostatic coupling coefficients of body centred cubic crystals(1963) P.L. Srivastava; R.S. SrivastavaIn order to discuss the thermal properties of body-centred cubic metals rigorously, the electrostatic coupling coefficients are required for setting up the dynamical matrix. The values of these coupling coefficients for 47 representative wave vectors of the positive octant of the Brillouin zone are reported in the present paper.PublicationArticle Analytical chemistry of thiocarbamides - I. Quantitative determination of thiourea(Springer-Verlag, 1963) Prakash Chandra GuptaA review is given of the methods of analysis of thiourea and the chemistry involved therein. Practical details are given where necessary, in other cases only the principals are discussed. An extensive and critical survey of the literature is included. © 1963 Springer-Verlag.PublicationArticle Studies in the Two‐Phase System Sodium Formate‐Pyridine. III. Extraction of copper and Analysis of Copper Pyrites(1963) G.S. Deshmukh; A.L.J. RaoResults are given for the extraction of copper by pyridine from sodium formate solutions. An almost complete extraction is obtained by a three‐stage batch extraction technique. A procedure for the separation of iron and copper is described and it is shown that by this extraction method the analysis of copper pyrites is rendered comparitively much easier than the usual classical methods. MukherjeeThe electric dipole bremsstrahlung-weighted cross section σb and integrated cross section σint for the photodisintegration of helium have been calculated using the modified Irving wave function. Good agreement has been obtained with the current experimental values: σb=2.4±0.15 mb and σint=95±7 MeV mb. The results have also been compared with the recent calculations of Goldhammer and Valk. © 1963 The American Physical Society.PublicationArticle Nuclear magnetic shielding constants and x-ray atomic scattering factors for two-, three-, and four-electron systems by means of analytic hartree-fock wavefunctions(1963) M.L. Rustgi; P. TlwariNuclear magnetic shielding constants and x-ray atomic scattering factors have been calculated for two-, three-, and four-electron systems using the best analytical self-consistent field functions of Roothaan, Sachs, and Weiss, and where possible, the reported values have been compared with the ones already published. It is pointed out that it may not be possible to extract any reliable information about the angular and radial correlations of electrons in the atoms and ions considered here from the scattering factors.PublicationArticle Amperometric determination ot bivalent tin with dichromate(Springer-Verlag, 1963) G.S. Deshmukh; S.V.S.S. MurtyAn amperometric determination of tin with potassium dichromate has been described. The advantage of the cathodic polarograms of Cr2O27- and Sn2+ in formate media was taken and titrations were performed at -0.8 V vs. S.C.E. at pH ≈3.0. It is shown that tin upto 10 mg may be determined accurately within the limits of experimental errors. © 1963 Springer-Verlag.PublicationArticle Probability Models for the Variation in the Number of Births per Couple(1963) S.N. SinghUnder certain assumptions two probability distributions for the variation in the number of births per couple are derived. A procedure to find the B.A.N. (Best Asymptotically Normal) estimates of the parameters of the first model is outlined. The distribution is applied to two examples. © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.PublicationArticle Stysanus stemonites (Pers.) Corda on potato in cold store in India(Birkhäuser-Verlag, 1963) M.J. Thirumalachar; M.S. Pavgi[No abstract available]PublicationArticle Lattice Constants and Thermal Expansion of Gold up to 878 °C by X‐Ray Method(1963) B.N. Dutta; B. DayalThe thermal expansion of gold has been studied over the temperature range 25° to 878 °C by the X‐ray powder technique. The experimental coefficients can be represented by the interpolation formula αt = 13.99 × 10−8 + 0.491 × 10−3 t. The work of LAWSON, and MITRA and MITRA is discussed, and it is shown that in this temperature range it is not necessary to postulate the existence of any anomalous expansion arising from lattic defects. GuhaBILLEN1 had earlier reported the release of cellular constituents from bacterial cells after irradiation with X-rays or with ultra-violet light. He carried out extensive qualitative determinations of the released cellular constituents in phosphate buffer-glucose medium. In this communication we record the change in viscosity of the eluted suspensions from the ultra-violet-irradiated bacterial cells. © 1963 Nature Publishing Group.PublicationArticle The Annealing of Radiolytic Damage in Some Nitrates(1963) A.G. Maddock; S.R. MohantyThe annealing of radiolytic damage in irradiated potassium and thallium nitrates is quite different from that of lead nitrate. In the case of potassium nitrate the transition introduces a more or less discontinuous recombination of fragments. In the thallium salt the low temperature annealing isotherm is not so very different from lead nitrate but a modest rise in temperature changes the characteristics of the process. Data are also given concerning the behaviour on heating of irradiated barium nitrate, silver nitrate and sodium nitrate. © 1963, Walter de Gruyter. The chromosome number is 36. Out of these one of the chromosomes, is considerably longer (2.5μ) in comparison with the rest. The septum initiation takes place in telophase which is unlike the one reported in C. involuta. The nuclear behaviour and the morphology of the chromosomes are in general agreement with those of the other members of the Ulotrichales so far studied. Further the germlings of this alga have attaching discs which are similar to Uronema. In view of these findings the systematic position of the alga has been discussed. © 1963, Japan Mendel Society, International Society of Cytology. MukherjeeThe stability of octupole deformation for even-even medium mass nuclei with small spheroidal deformation has been studied in order to explain the existence of odd-parity excited states in some of them. The total single-particle energy is calculated by an exact diagonalization of the Nilsson Hamiltonian with octupole deformation, neglecting the residual two-particle interaction. Within this framework, it is found that these nuclei are stable against octupole deformation. © 1963 The American Physical Society.PublicationArticle Functional renal thyroid follicles in wild specimens of the freshwater teleost Barbus stigma (cuv. et val.)(Springer-Verlag, 1963) A.G. SathyanesanRenal thyroid follicles were found in all individuals when over two hundred freshly captured specimens of the freshwater teleost, Barbus stigma, were studied histologically. A further study of 100-120 specimens maintained in the laboratory for up to 14 months also revealed renal thyroid tissue in all individuals. There was no noticeable difference in extrapharyngeal thyroid development between these two groups of fish. The renal thyroid follicles were similar in appearance to those of the pharyngeal area. Radioiodine autographs demonstrated that a similar capacity to form protein-bound iodine was present in the thyroid tissues of the two areas. Most of the renal follicles were normal in appearance, a few being slightly hypertrophic. No renal thyroid tissue was found in specimens of five other species of fish collected from the same habitats as Barbus stigma. It is postulated that extrapharyngeal thyroid development in Barbus stigma may represent a stable, normal adaptive response to environmental stimuli, and that it may play an important role in the economy of the animal. The contrast with other species suggests the presence of genetic factors mediating the sensitivity to environmental factors or the ability to form heterotopic thyroid tissue. © 1963 Springer-Verlag.PublicationArticle Influence of crystal defects on the annealing of chemical radiation damage(1963) S.R. Mohanty; S.R. UpadhyayRECENT investigations have shown that crystal defects determine the fate of the fragments generated in solids by radiative thermal neutron capture as well as the kinetics of subsequent annealing reactions1,2. So far, there has been no experimental evidence for the influence of defects on the annealing of chemical damage produced in solids by irradiation. We have now obtained such evidence in the case of annealing in lead nitrate. © 1963 Nature Publishing Group.PublicationArticle Thermionic analogue of the Joshi effect(1963) R.J. GalagaliThe Joshi effect is shown to exist in an electrodeless discharge in air when a central wire emits electrons. This is compared with the effects observed when irradiation is produced by ultra-violet or visible light.PublicationArticle Role of hydrogen peroxide in the radiation induced reduction of mercuric chloride(Springer-Verlag, 1963) P.S. Rao[No abstract available]PublicationArticle On the structural peculiarities of the pituitary in some clupeoid fishes with a note on their probable evolutionary significance(1963) A.G. SathyanesanHilsa ilisha has a well developed sella turcica comparable to that of Polypterus and Epiceratodus. The persistent orohypophyseal duct and parasphenoidal foramen of adult Hilsa ilisha may represent the retention of embryonic features such as those seen in Salmo trutta, Chanos chanos and Elops saurus. Since this duct is considered to be the persistent base of Rathke's pouch, its presence in adult Hilsa ilisha is an archaic feature which may be considered as the repetition of the condition observed in Polypterus, Calamoichthys and Latimeria. The presence of discontinuous orohyphyseal duct in the fry and fingerlings of Engraulis telara and Gadusia chapra suggests that it may be the remnant of an open buccal connection present during the embryonic condition. In all the specimens used in this study the hypophyseal cavity is in the form of a “tube system” restricted to the rostral pars distalis and it is formed by the constricted and separated portion of the diverticuli of the orohypophyseal canal. It is better developed in the adult Hilsa ilisha and Gadusia chapra than in Engraulis telara. This reduction in the prominence of the duct tends towards the reported condition in the “primitive teleosts” the trout and the eel. Though basically the pituitary of the clupeoid fishes described are of the typical teleostean type, the orohypophyseal duct and the hypophyseal cavity in the form of a “tube system” are distinctly chondrostean features. The presence of these features in different degrees of expression in these forms and the expression of ductile and tubular structure in the fry of Chanos chanos, Salmo trutta and Elops saurus together apparently provide a continuous range of variations from the typically chondrostean to that of the higher teleostean type where cavities and ducts are totally absent.
