Abstract

The specific heats of neon and xenon are calculated from a study of their lattice vibrations. The effect of zero‐point energy is included by an iterative method and a Buckingham exponential potential is used. The calculated and experimental values of Cv agree well for xenon but not so well for neon. It is suggested that the interatomic forces in neon are similar to those in helium and that a Buckingham potential, which is applicable to solids formed from heavy rare gases, is inapplicable to solid neon.
