The reproductive organs hitherto unknown are described in detail. The prostate is large and massive; it opens into the atrium near the antero‐ventral margin. The prostate cells soon after they are functional and filled with secretion lose their structure and become disorganized, while the secretion passes as an inwardly moving mass into the atrium at the point, where the gland is connected with it. The atrial epithelium also at this time undergoes a great change on account of the secretion by which its cells become replaced having lost their entity. The manner of connection of the prostate with the atrium suggests its origin as an outgrowth of the atrial epithelium. The cælomic cavity in the segment which contains the spermathecæ is separated off from the peripheral portion by the formation of a ventro‐lateral wall, which is composed of a central muscular layer surrounded on either side by a peculiar parenchymatous tissue of peritoneal origin. The central chamber thus formed contains a11 the organs of the segment and is also filled with the developing sperms; the spermathecal ducts pass through the ventro‐lateral corners of the wall on their may to the exterior. The spermathecæ are ectodermal in origin, and arise as an invagination from the epidermis. As regards its systematic position Aulodrilus belongs to the Tubificidæ, although it resembles the Naididæ in some of its features. Among the Tubificidæ it is related to Tubifex and Psammorcytes on the one hand, and Branchiura and Kawamuria on the other. The spermiducal chamber, which is present in Monopylephorus, also seems to be independently derived in these genera, and perhaps acts as a sucker during copulation. Copyright © 1922, Wiley Blackwell. But the mere introduction of a thick glass plate with plane-parallel sides in the path of one of the interfering beams is shown to bring into view literally hundreds of them in the form of circular rings. Any attempt at partially monochromatizing the light diminishes their number. This increase in number is due to the different parts of the spectrum producing interference in different places, as is demonstrated by spectroscopic examination of the rings. The corresponding formulas are quantitatively verified by using them to determine the dispersion of the glass plate employed. Two other examples of this peculiar dispersion of white-light fringes are quoted and it is pointed out that the increase in the number of white-light fringes observed by Wood on introducing sodium vapor into the interferometer path also involves the same process and is not due to achromatization as suggested by him. Sensitiveness of the eye to color contrast.-These fringes are seen merely by color-contrast. The color has been calculated and is shown to be poorer than even the first order white of Newton's scale and yet the eye is able to distinguish them quite clearly. © 1924 The American Physical Society.PublicationArticle Nitration by means of a mixture of nitrosulfonic and fuming nitric acids(1925) Varma, Phuldeo Sahay; Kulkarni, Dattatrey Anant1. A 45-50% solution of nitrosulfonic acid in fuming nitric acid, prepared by passing sulfur dioxide into cold fuming nitric acid, is a better nitrating agent than the usual mixture of nitric and sulfuric acids. 2. This reagent has been employed to nitrate various phenols, anilines, aromatic acids and hydrocarbons, as well as benzanilide and benzaldehyde. 3. It is suggested that nitrosulfonic acid functions because of its dehydrating action. In this respect it is more efficacious than sulfuric acid; hence the amount of nitrosulfonic acid necessary is considerably less than that of sulfuric acid ordinarily employed in nitrating mixtures. © 1925, American Chemical Society.
