Organizational Unit Department of ArabicThe Department of Arabic, Faculty of Arts, Banaras Hindu University was established in 1916 and the Arabic teaching formally began since 1917 with a single teacher Mirza Mohammad Hasan �Faiz Banarasi�. Maulwi Mahesh Prashad joined the department in 1920 and taught until his retirement in 1951. In 1973, it was trifurcated and hence the department became independent from Persian and Urdu. Prof. Badrul Hasan Abdi was appointed as the first Head of the Department of Arabic. Among the prominent teachers, who taught in the department, were Prof. Nasima Faruqui, Prof. Imran Raza, Prof. Abu Hatim Khan and Prof. Badruddin al-Hafiz. Prof. Vazeer Hasan, Prof. Ashfaq Ahmad, Dr. Quamer Shaban and Dr. Md. Raihan are currently teaching at the department. The Department offers PhD programme, M.A., B.A. (Honours) in Arabic, B.A. (Honours) in Arab Culture, 4 semester PG and UG Diplomas and One Year Certificate Course. It has thoroughly revised its syllabus in 2019 and has come into effect from July 2019. The Arabic syllabus has been revised/redesigned in such a way that the graduates of the department get thorough knowledge of the Arabic language and literature of different periods (Pre-Islamic to modern period). The Arabic studies in India have also been given due importance. To enable the learners get jobs in various public and private sectors, translation from Arabic into English and vice versa has been introduced.
