Organizational Unit Department of Mycology & Plant PathologyThe Department of Mycology & Plant Pathology which came into existence with the inception of the Institute of Agricultural Sciences in the 1931. Since then the Department has produced dynamic and vibrant teachers, fine researchers, educational administrators, Vice-Chancellors etc. The Department has ever since it�s Inception, occupied and eminent position throughout the transition of the original Institute of Agricultural Research into a college then a Faculty and once again the present full-fledged Institute of Agricultural Sciences. In consonance with various phases of development, the achievements of the department are phenomenal and innumerable. Academic caliber and excellence in research is discernible in high quality research carried out by the staff and students which has earned international recognition. It�s contribution in coordinated projects, coupled with ad-hoc research projects from various national and international agencies, transfer of innovative research techniques through "Scientist-Farmer" participatory research programs and frequent visits of farmer's fields have been some of the special features of the Department adding to the glory of its unbated growth upsurge. The status paper of the Department has been most meticulously presented. This valuable and stimulatory document will prove to be of significance in providing and impetus to students, researchers and others.Organizational Unit Department of French StudiesThe teaching of French started at the Banaras Hindu University in 1948 at the Department of Foreign Languages. A separate Department was established in 1982 with the nomenclature of Department of French Studies which aims to equip the students with the ability to access rich resources in the French language to gain an appreciative and insightful understanding of the perspectives of the cultural context of the target language and provide translation/interpretation from French into English or Hindi with sophistication and sensitivity. The Department recognizes the study of French literature as an important intellectual and creative activity and seeks to realize a national capability in these areas through innovative courses of studies. After establishment, it was shaped and nurtured by stalwarts like Prof. Prabhakar Jha who was appointed Ambassador of Republic of India to Republic of Madagascar and also High Commissioner of Republic of India to Republic of Fiji by the Government of India for his outstanding scholarly contribution for the promotion of French Studies in India and abroad. Its scholastic tradition was further strengthened by Mrs P.K. Gode, Shri. Hari Narayan Das, Prof. Swapan Daasmahapatra, Prof. Sushant Kumar Mishra. The mandate of the Department is to foster an advanced level of language proficiency, to provide training in a spoken and written skill, to develop a holistic study of the French language and its culture, involving key aspects of literature, history & civilization, linguistics, didactics, francophone literature and to cultivate translation skill from French to English/Hindi and vice versa. The faculty is actively involved in research in Comparative Literature and Translation Studies. It proposes to offer short-term courses in spoken French, Functional French and Creative Writing with the focus on the fact that all amenities are easily accessible to students with the availability of quality courses, innovative pedagogical practices, blended learning based on the hybrid model, effective evaluation and feedback system, grievance redressal forums, libraries equipped with online resources and internet facilities. Conferences, seminars, symposiums, workshops and lecture series are regularly held in the department to give a sharp edge to learning and teaching as well as for attaining global recognition.Organizational Unit Department of Journalism & Mass Communicationhe Department of Journalism and Mass Communication was established in 1973 in the Faculty of Arts. It runs a 2-year (four semesters) Master of Arts in Mass Communication course with a provision for specialization and a mandatory 8-10 weeks of internship programme. The departmental library has more than 5 thousand titles. It has a computer laboratory of 40 tems with Internet connectivity. The departmental film library has more than 200 CDs and DVDs of classical films. It has the state of the art equipment for TV and radio programme production. Till date, more than ten doctoral students have successfully completed their Ph. D degrees from the department. The department publishes its students� laboratory news bulletin called Parisar.Organizational Unit Department of HistoryThe Faculty of Social Sciences being one of the oldest and distinguished centers of learning has a long lineage of strengthening the academic fabric of the Banaras Hindu University. It has hosted scores of scholars and researchers whose contribution has been recognized and acclaimed world over. In addition to the catering of teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the five disciplines of Economics, History, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology, the Faculty has branched out its new direction by setting up new centres in areas such as, women's studies and peace studies along with some of the professional courses to meet the emerging challenges of present day world. Research is also an integral and significant component of the academic activity at the Faculty level and the contribution of some of the teachers has been recognized at the national and international levels.Organizational Unit Department of PanchkarmaAyurveda, as a holistic medical system, employs two fundamental approaches in patient care: Samshodhana (Purificative/Bio-cleansing) and Samshamana (Palliative) treatments. Panchakarma, a cornerstone of Ayurvedic therapy, encompasses five significant procedures: Vamana (Therapeutic emesis), Virechana (Therapeutic purgation), Niruha Basti (Therapeutic Cleansing Enema), Anuvasana Basti (Therapeutic Oil Enema), and Nasya (Therapeutic Nasal Administration of Medicine). These therapies primarily focus on bio-cleansing, purifying the body's internal systems. In addition to the core Panchakarma procedures, many internal and external therapeutic interventions are administered within the Panchakarma department. These treatments target a wide spectrum of ailments, including neurological, dermatological, musculoskeletal, gastro-intestinal, metabolic, lifestyle-related, respiratory, and psychiatric disorders. Panchakarma, through its specialized techniques, effectively addresses these conditions, promoting overall well-being and health restoration. The Panchakarma department plays a pivotal role in serving the community, extending its expertise to treat a diverse array of patients. Beyond curative care, it embraces a preventive and health-promotion ethos, emphasizing the importance of disease prevention and maintaining optimal health. Furthermore, this department collaborates with other medical specialties, offering its valuable support to enhance patient care by integrating Panchakarma therapies into comprehensive treatment plans. The department of Panchkarma at Faculty of Ayurveda, IMS, BHU was established in November 2019, which was earlier functioning as a unit under the department of Kayachikitsa, Faculty of Ayurveda. The department, at present is involved in teaching of BAMS, Post Graduate diploma in Panchkarma students & Ph.D Scholars.Organizational Unit Department of Rasa ShastraThe Department of Rasa-Shastra and Bhaishajya Kalpana came into existence in the year 1978. Since its inception, the department is engaged in the teaching and evaluation of the Ayurvedic drugs to improve their quality. The Department has designed and developed many types of equipments to facilitate the pharmaceutical work and established criteria for the proper standardization of drugs. The Department is engaged in teaching & research activities in relation to herbal as well as metallic/mineral drugs.Organizational Unit Department of MathematicsThe Department of Mathematics was founded in 1898 as a part of the Central Hindu College at Kamachha much before the establishment of the Banaras Hindu University in 1916. Subsequently in 1917, Department of Mathematics along with the Central Hindu College was transferred to the Banaras Hindu University. The Department had the privilege of having had eminent scholars like Prof. V.V.Narlikar, Prof.Ganesh Prasad, Prof.R.Vaidyanath Swamy and Prof.R.S.Mishra on its faculty. The teachers of the Department have been receiving national and international recognition and financial support for their high quality research. The Department has made notable research contributions in the areas of Functional Analysis, Geometry, Relativity, Mathematical Programming, Topology, Fluid Mechanics and Fuzzy Mathematics. Two Research journals "Progress of Mathematics" and "Proceeding of the Mathematical Society,BHU" are regularly published.Organizational Unit Department of ShahityaSpecially branchege promoting to Poetry, figures of speech and dramaOrganizational Unit Department of LinguisticsThe Department of Linguistics, Faculty of Arts, BHU was established in 1972 jointly with Sanskrit, Hindi and English departments. It offers courses in all the major core and applied areas of Linguistics including Phonetics, Phonology, Morphology, Syntax, Typology, Semantics, Pragmatics, Forensic Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, Natural Language Processing, Sociolinguistics, Clinical and Psycho-linguistics etc. The department offers three courses viz. B.A. in Linguistics(3 year), 4 Year U.G. in Linguistics(NEP 2020), M.A. in Linguistics and Ph.D. in Linguistics. In our department, faculties come from different states of India. They represent their respective ethnicity, culture, languages etc. Faculties are multilingual and extensively work in order to enrich their mother tongue and they also encourage the researchers and students to work for their respective mother tongues. Our faculties are specialized in various field of Applied Linguistics apart from core Theoretical Linguistics like Forensic Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, Translation Studies, Clinical Linguistics, Linguistic Typology, Cognitive Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Psycholinguistics, Historical Linguistics etc. Faculties are also engaged in various projects viz. UGC-Major Research Project, Incentive Grant, Seed Grant, Transdisciplinary Research Grant funded by IoE, BHU, Government of India and abroad. Dr. Dr. Abhinav Kr. Mishra has completed a UGC-Major Research Project in Clinical Linguistics. Dr. Praveen Gatla has been sanctioned with Faculty Incentive Grant (2022-25) and Transdisciplinary Research Grant(2023-2025) funded by IoE, BHU. Dr. Udoyan Banerji (2022-25) and Dr. Arun Kumar (2020-23) have been sanctioned with Seed Grant under Institute of Eminence (IoE), BHU. Faculties are actively participating in knowledge creation in the linguistic fraternity and are invited as speakers, resource persons and experts from various universities and institutions across India (National Testing Agency, Central Investigation Bureau, Central Institute of Indian Languages, Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti, BharatiyaVidya Sansthan, Ministry of Education, Government of India, CBSE) and in abroad as Member of Global Expert Panel in Govt. of China, Visiting Researcher as Aston University, Birmingham (U.K.). The department has successfully hosted several international and national conferences, seminars, workshops, webinars and invited lectures like 'Two-Day National Seminar Teaching-Learning in Mother/Local Tongue(Linguistics): NEP-2020 & 1st Alumni Meet of Department of Linguistics', �49th All India Conference of Dravidian Linguists (AICDL-49)', '28th All India Conference of Linguists (AICL-28)', '11th International Conference on South Asian Languages and Literatures (ICOSAL-11)' etc. In 2022, the department celebrated its Golden Jubilee and to commemorate this, the department organized the International Web Talk Series on Linguistics which was conducted throughout the year by national and international linguists as resource persons. Our alumni are currently serving as academicians in Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Agra, Nagpur University, GLA University, Mathura, Central Institute of Indian Languages, Amity University, Central University of Rajasthan, Senior Scientific Officer, Haryana Public Service Commission, Haryana, Bihar Public Service Commission, Bihar, Teach for BHU, IoE, Junior Hindi translator (Ministry of Defence), Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and researchers in various universities (University of Hyderabad, EFLU, Hyderabad, EFLU, Lucknow, Lucknow University, KMI, Agra, MGAHV, Wardha) and IITs (IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Ropar, IIT Banaras Hindu University, IIT Guwahati, IIT Jodhpur) across the country. Many of our alumni are placed in eminent multinational companies like Google, hp, Cognizant, Amazon, Amazon-Alexa-Team, Flipkart, Cerene, PhonePe, Samsung etc. Currently, more than 100 students (UG and PG) and 11 research scholars are engaged in the department. They come from all across India and abroad with their respective identity, culture and language. Research scholars are doing extensive research in various core and applied fields of Linguistics (Phonetics, Forensic Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, Language Teaching, Historical Linguistics, Language and Law etc.). At present the Department of Linguistics is headed by Dr. Abhinav Kumar Mishra, who is a renowned Forensic Linguist, Secretary of Linguistic Society of India, Commonwealth Academic Fellow and a Penalist in media as Forensic Linguistic Expert.Organizational Unit Department of Soil Science & Agril ChemistryA section of Agricultural Chemistry was established in the year 1945 in erstwhile Institute of Agricultural Research (I.A.R.) and was located in a single laboratory. The section of Agriculture Chemistry got its due recognition as Department of Soil Science and Agriculture Chemistry in 1968. The department is currently located in three buildings of the Institute and has well-equipped laboratories for U.G. and P.G. classes, nine research laboratories, two classrooms and one lecture theatre. Human resource development by quality teaching continues to remain the basic objective. The department is continuously revising and strengthening its focus on basic and strategic research. Sustaining soil health for food security and nutritional safety without impairing environmental quality and creating mass awareness about soil and society relationship are the main focus areas which we are concentrating upon currently. One of the pioneering research achievements of the department is formation of clay humus-complex responsible for coloration of black soils for which the founder Head of the Department Prof. Sant Singh was invited by Swedish Royal Academy for the consideration of Nobel prize of Chemistry, 1970. During the last 4-5 decades, the specialized areas of teaching and research in the Department are in digital soil mapping, nutrient use efficiency (both macro & micro), soil and water pollution, greenhouse gases in agroecotem, climate changes, biofertilizers, carbon sequestration, industrial and biowastes utilization, biopriming, nano-technology and pesticides residues in soil, water and plant. The Department in very well known for the outstanding performance of it�s alumni every year in state and national level competitive examinations conducted for recruitments in various sectors.Organizational Unit Department of CommerceThe Department of Commerce came into being as an adjunct to the Department of Economics in the year 1940, the Silver Jubilee year of the Banaras Hindu University. The Department gained an independent status in a very short span of time. The Department of Commerce continued with its pace of growth and in the year 1965, on the eve of the Golden Jubilee year of the Banaras Hindu University, the Department of Commerce was raised to the status of a separate full-fledged Faculty. Heralding a new era in the year 1968-1969, the Faculty of Commerce introduced Management courses as a separate discipline of study. The growth journey of the Faculty of Commerce witnessed new heights in the year 1975, the Diamond Jubilee year of the Banaras Hindu University. In the very same year, the Faculty of Commerce was renamed as the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies with two separate Departments in its fold. The renamed Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies grew leaps and bounds in the next few years. The growth of the faculty was giving rise to a new change in terms of a pressing need for separating the two departments as two independent faculties. By the year 1984, both the departments were given the status of two independent faculties, namely 'Faculty of Commerce' and 'Faculty of Management Studies'. Consequently, in 1984, the departments were restructured and renamed as the Faculty of Management Studies and the Faculty of Commerce, respectively, marking their status as two distinct faculties. Since 1984, the Commerce Faculty has been offering various courses leading to degrees such as B.Com. (Hons), B.Com. (FMM), M.Com., M.B.A (RI) M.B.A (FT), M.B.A (F.M), Ph.D., & D.Litt.. The Faculty draws students for their different courses not only from different parts of the country, but also from foreign countries. At present, approximately 1500 students are studying in various courses. The faculty has very rich infrastructure facility. It has its own library catering to the needs of the students of different courses. The library has a treasure trove of excellent books on various facets of business and commerce. The faculty has an excellent computer lab of its own which is fully equipped with the modern computer network based on Wi-Fi and LAN internet connectivity. The computer lab compliments the classroom pedagogy and provides the much needed facilities to the students for navigating through network and using email, web -surfing, etc. The computer lab is supplemented with 3 Seminar Halls and an Auditorium. For facilitating the smooth stay of students, there are separate hostels for boys and girls. Presently, the faculty strength is 46, reflecting a wonderful mix of experienced and young talents. Besides having published and presented a large number of research papers, the Faculty members have produced more than 250 Ph.D.s and completed a number of research projects. In addition, a number of major and minor research projects are in progress. The Faculty has also organized many national and international seminars and conferences, including two All India Commerce Conferences and one All India Accounting Conference. The well qualified and energetic Faculty, through its academic acumen, is fully prepared and geared to embrace the academic and research challenges emanating from the rapidly changing complex business environment.Organizational Unit Organizational Unit Organizational Unit Organizational Unit Department of GeophysicsThe department of Geophysics was started by the then Vice-chancellor, Pt. Govind Malviya with only one staff member, (Prof.) Jagdeo Singh, who subsequently got his Ph.D degree and training from Imperial college, Lonon. It functioned then with cooperation from the Department of Geology, Physics, Mathematics and college of engineering and mining (now IT BHU). . The Department of Geophysics, established in 1949, is one of the oldest pioneer centers of Geophysical education in the country. Prof. Rajnath was its first Head of the department. When the department of Geophysics got an independent space at its present location in 1964, Prof. H. S. Rathore became the Head of the department. Initially, two year M. Sc degree course in Geophysics was started. But when UGC made the countrywide amendment of the Master Degree course of Geophysics to be of three year course, the Department of Geophysics, BHU adopted the same degree course since 1976, leading to M. Sc (Tech.) Geophysics with specialization in exploration Geophysics and Meteorology. The Department is actively engaged in teaching of d courses in exploration Geophysics and Meteorology to postgraduate students, in carrying out field investigations and collaborative work with different government/ quasi-government organizations and in offering consultancy services to the interested agencies. The first Ph.D. degree from the department was awarded in 1965. However, the department has produced 110 Ph. Ds. and about 650 research papers have been published in the national and international journals of repute. During last three decades, 27 research projects funded by various agencies like DST, ONGC, CGWB, UGC and CSIR have been completed. Many faculty members have been visited a number of foreign countries like U.S.A., England, Germany, Australia, Netherlands, Japan, Canada, Italy and Korea on various academic assignments and a few have been elected fellows of AEG and AGU. The department has got modern geophysical equipments. The department is also collaborating with India Meteorological Department, Govt. of India in maintaining a Weather Observatory, a Seismological Observatory and an Ozone Unit. The Department of Geophysics has been supported by DST-FIST programme and a grant of Rs. 64.25 lacs has been sanctioned in 2003 for the infrastructure developments including equipments, library and laboratory updating, networking purposes etc. The department is equipped with modern geophysical equipments. The syllabus of M. Sc. (Tech.) Geophysics has been revised and d regularly with more emphasis on computer aided applications in geophysical education. The Department of Geophysics has successfully completed the glorious fifty years in 1999 and the Golden Jubilee Celebrations (1949-1999); though belated, were held in the first week of November, 2003. The department has also organized twelve national/ international seminars/ symposia/ workshops and the summer schools in different domains. Two national symposia on "Developments in Geophysical Sciences in India" and "Earthquake Processes and Seismic Hazards (EPSH)" were held in 2003 and 2005 respectively. A DST sponsored Group Monitoring Workshop on climate change was organized in December 2006. The department has a sectional library with over 2000 books in exploration and meteorology. The department has several geophysical laboratories like seismic laboratory, electrical and electromagnetic laboratory, digital electronics laboratory and computer laboratory for computation and accessing Internet facility. All the faculty members have been provided each with latest personal computer and printing devices. Department of Geophysics, Banaras Hindu University offers M.Sc. (Tech.) program covering contemporary and emerging fields of Geophysics having wide ranging interests to meet the growing needs of the industries. The rigorous academics and regular department-industry partnership help to prepare our students to keep pace with the changing times. The teaching program is backed by competent faculty members besides high quality academic infrastructure, which enables our students to be flexible enough to adapt and to come out with best possible solutions even in the most difficult situations. The faculty and students always strive hard to maintain its position of leadership in the various fields of Geophysics. A large number of organizations have enjoyed lasting and fruitful relationship with us through the campus placement, which makes it evident that our alumni do deliver the best, with unmatched professional enthusiasm, to the companies/organizations they join. Our students have been selected by leading national and multinational companies/organizations.Organizational Unit Department of Swasthavritta & YogaSwasthavritta is the branch of Ayurveda which deals with prevention of diseases through healthy life style and use of Rasayana. This department was an integral section of department of Basic Principles since 1979 and got independent status in the faculty of Ayurveda in the November 2006. The purview of this department includes the activities like community health, surveys, health camps in the village areas, health promotion and prevention of the diseases, along with the U.G and P.G teaching and research activities in the field. About 34 M.D (Ay) and 20 (Ph .D) scholars have been produced by the department.Organizational Unit Department of EducationThe Faculty of Education came into existence in 1918 initially as the Teacher's Training College and later shifted to the Kamachha Complex as part of the Banaras Hindu University. Since then, the Faculty has been striving to produce teachers imbued with the cultural traditions of our society and also modern enough to keep pace with changing times. The Faculty is situated in the Kamachha Complex of Banaras Hindu University, positioned between Varanasi Railway Station and the main campus at an equal distance. The Faculty of Education has been fulfilling the cherished dream of the founder of the University, who attached great importance to teacher education. It has rendered appreciable service to the cause of education and nation-building by producing eminent educationists, such as the late Dr. K.L. Shrimali, an eminent diplomat and former Education Minister of India, Shri Haribansh Rai Bachchan, a renowned poet, and many others. It also runs a B.Ed. (Special) degree program for training teachers for handicapped children. The thrust areas of the ongoing research projects of the Faculty include Value-oriented Education, Computer Assisted Instruction, Special Education, Distance Education, Educational Technology, Educational Guidance, and Science Education. The Faculty organizes seminars and workshops regularly and has several prestigious publications.Organizational Unit Department of PhysiologyThe Department of Psychology is one of the premier Department which, right from its inception in the year 1949, has incessantly strived to inculcate the motto of scientific rigour in its students. The Department obtained its independent status in 1962 and it has maintained its tradition of equal emphasis on experimentation as well as on applied areas. It has 7 well-equipped laboratories that are currently the most advanced in this country and can compete with any good laboratory abroad. Alive to the urgent need of providing dynamic, synergetic, professionally well-equipped, and humanistically sensitive personnel managers who are able to cope with the in coordinately challenging organizational demands, the Department of Psychology launched an innovative and job oriented two year's (4-Semesters) Master of Personnel Management and Industrial Relations Course. The Department believes that it is essential to train such personnel managers who are deeply committed to humanistic and egalitarian social ethos and who decisively put man above machine.Organizational Unit Department of Forensic MedicineThe Department was established in the year 1964 when the founder MBBS batch (1963) came to 2nd professional tenure. The founder faculty member Late Prof. S.M. Dasgupta joined this department in year 1969 as regular head. The M.D. course in Forensic Medicine was started in the year 1971 and was recognized for the MD course by MCI since 1973. The department currently is comprised of three faculty members out of sanctioned Four Faculty posts and has Three sanctioned posts of Senior Residents (including Trauma Centre, BHU), 4 Junior Residents (linked with MD course), 8 Ph.D scholars,Technical, academic and administrative staff along with two forensic pharmacist posted at the autopsy centre by the state government. The primary duties of the department include teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students and medicolegal work of the SSL Hospital, IMS, BHU. The department has 84 undergraduate students every year, who come to us for one and a half years, and during this period they are trained in all medicolegal matters which they are likely to face in their medical professional life.Organizational Unit Department of Vikriti VigyanDepartment of Vikriti Vigyan is situated in the "Dhanvantri Bhavan" of Faculty of Ayurveda, Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. Total area of department is approximately 2178 Sq. Feet. The Department of Vikriti Vigyan was initially started as a section in the year 1988 under the Department of Kayachikitsa with a view to impart Postgraduate teaching/ training and conduct higher research activities in this subject. This section has got an independent status as a full fledged department on 6th November 2006. This department has made substantial contribution in the field of aetiopathological and clinico-pathological studies in several diseases under the personalities of highest order of academic excellence like Prof. S N Tripathi and Prof. Divakar Ojha. Since inception, this Department has produced 26 MD (Ay.) Post Graduates and 06 Ph. Ds up to July 2011.
